My dad served in the 29th I.D.(Omaha Beach,etc), and that sure as hell was not "continental U.S."

Thing most people don't know, and in some cases refuse to realize (like the poster with posters) is number wise (I assume it still is like in the past), only the 1st through 25th, with the exception now of the 101st and 82nd AB Divisions, are Regular Army. The 26th through 104th Divisions, since before WWI and I assume still today, have always been filled out with primarily National Guard units. Hence why in WWI the National Guard Regiments called up would be placed in the higher numbered divisions.

As long as you guy allow me to kick the Anti-American garbage from Europeans. You Americans are too nice to them. That is also one of the reason I would like Alberta to separate from the rest of Canada I can not stand that Canada has become an European weenie country.

My point was that until Bush became president, the National Guard did not have any wide-scale and long-term deployment in a foreign war since the Korean War, and many people who joined did not expect to be sent overseas. Even President Bush admitted in 1990 that he joined the Air National Guard during the Vietnam war in order to avoid being drafted and sent overseas: "I was not prepared to shoot my eardrum out with a shotgun in order to get a deferment. Not was I willing to go to Canada. So I chose to better myself by learning how to fly airplanes."

You shouldn't sign the enlistment papers unless you have the fortitude to back up your signature.

That's what I always thought. I mean after all, what does a military do? What is it there for? WHy do armies have them? To fight... This isn't one of my better analogies, but its like joining a sales force, and then complaining because you might have to actually sell something at some point.

WTF!!! Dude, when you join a military service of your own free will, you are rolling the dice as to whether you'll see combat or not. I'm sure the National guardsmen who joined just before Korea didn't expect to wind up there either but they sure as hell did.

Now, I don't generally have a problem with people who don't want to join the service, that's their perogative. And I normally don't have a problem with people who voice opposition to a war, this is America, after all. But I do have a problem with stupid people who join the service and take full advantage of its opportunities and then turn around and yell, "But I didn't expect to go overseas!"

That's the problem today; people saying "Sure, I volunteered for the service, but I only wanted the training/benefits/adventure/money/etc (pick one). I never expected to get shot at." Come on, give me a break, you joined the military, for God's sake! What do you expect?

Of course no where in the quote did Bush say he joined the National Guard to avoid being sent oversea.
He did say he did not want to be an Infantry guy. Of course you missed "Not" with Nor was I willing to go to Canada. Supposedly he did inquire about National Guard pilots being sent overseas.
"I'm saying to myself, 'What do I want to do?' I think I don't want to be an infantry guy as a private in Vietnam. What I do decide to want to do is learn to fly."
