Takes some tweaking, but I have it running under Win XP Pro SP2 with DOSBOX 0.63. It has actually proved quite a bit more stable than quite a few Windows games. Ha! Ha!

Dissappointing patrol ... of six fish four were duds! What a way to fight a war in stinking tin can!

Not even Eddy or Ray are chatting it up at the bar. I guess it is time to get back to dry land and COTA testing.

You know I just realized this morning what makes sub sims as a genre have such a different flavor than ground combat games. It is the fog of war. In most ground combat games, FOW tends to reduce over time as contact is made, your forces advance, and the duration of contact increases. In many cases, FOW may dissappear completely. For sub sims, even in the best of cases, FOW well in excess of most ground combat sims is ever present.
For WWII sub sims (AOD, SH1, and SH2), once you dive to evade, you have very limited knowledge of what is going on above you. Only a rough idea of what quadrant the hunters are in and a vague notion as to their relative distance. What they are and what they intend is anyone's guess.
For nuke sub sims (SC) having improved passive sonar, you may build up a detailed and fairly accurate tactical picture, but as soon you or the enemy shoots a weapon, the picture tends to degrade very rapidly.

A couple of non-COTA screenies for you ground pounders
{SH2/PA - Doesn't compare to the graphics of SH3. I sure hope they dump Starforce for SH4. Otherwise, I will probably find myself playing AOD on a 4GHz machine in 2007. Talk about an anachronism.}

Graphics are looking good Markshot. I had the PA mod for SHII. It certainy improved things a lot. I must say though, I like a dynamic campaign for sub sims. I understand your concerns about Starforge. I was hovering on whether to buy SHIII until I read that X2 also had it, which I'd installed way before.. so the issue seemed moot.
I recently downloaded the IUB 1.02 mod for SHIII and it's really good! I don't blame you for stearing clear though.
I couldn't find my old copy of AOD.. I think I lent it to a mate, who I've now asked for it back!

Of the three I have (AOD, SH1, SH2), I think AOD is the best. Great atomosphere and challenging AI. Don't lose that game.
I was too aggressive trying to penetrate the screen of a North Atlantic convoy in the Summer. Very hard against a heavily escorted convoy without a wolf pack. I wanted to make a night surface attack, but with only 4.5 hours of night cover it has been impossible.
I was spotted and forced down. I believe I got two destroyers and a corvette topside.
I thought I was finally going to be able to slip away. The West tracks slowly started to drift in parallel which I took to mean that they were moving to catch up with the convoy which is heading West. Leaving the Southern track still hunting for me.
It was all looking good and then PING, PING, CLANG! Someone's ASDIC got me again. Two minutes from now there will WOOSH, WOOSH, WOOSH ... as somebody's screws pound the water above --- time to dance again!

More than four hours they churned the water above us and shattered the deep with their depth charges. Despite all of our cunning maneuvering, we never managed to break contact for longer than 20 minutes. They pushed us to the limits of our battery and compressed air. But finally, they thought better of leaving their flock unattended lest some other wolf were to catch their scent. They were at least 30-40km out of position already. So, they called off the chase.
They left us with an inoperable stern tube and two fish which would have to make the trip back to St. Nazaire, France.
Out of deference to their tenacity, we will attempt to find easier prey further South, but still well outside of land based air patrols.
