The Zero sucked....it had a bad propeller and it's pistons had fine hairline fractures which caused a loss of horse-power.

Nik, if the zero was such a pile of doggie doo, whats that say about Allied pilots who had a much better aircraft? [X(]
Better check your scenario Speedy, knowing Nik, he's probably outfitted the Iowa with 40" shells.

They were tired......Thunderstorms at the training camps kept the Allied pilots up at night causing them to have tired, red eyes in the morning as they sat in their ready room. Also there was a strike in Columbia at the time resulting in a coffee shortage. Thus, the pilots had to settle for de-Caf.
If not for that, they'd have scored 30:1 in the air.

I only deal in the facts. All those other historians are poopy heads. Even Parshalls and Evans are poopy heads.....they dared to describe the Zero in favorable terms! (gasp!)

The Zero did have a nice cup holder.........so high spillage prevention characteristics.

I've always thought it was have been an interesting "what if" essay...
What if there was an EPA in WW2? Gawd. All the tankers getting torp'd. All the ships getting sunk with their leaking oil.
I can see it now:
Dick O'Kane looks out of the periscope and sees a Japanese tanker.
"Ready tubes 1 - 4!"
He sweeps the horizon, to look for escorts...
"Damn! There's a boat manned by the EPA closing fast. We're too close to the reef! Oil all over the place, and too much environmental damage!"

There is no data to support your assertation. As such, you are incorrect. There was nothing "nice" about the Zero. An AM/PM Big Gulp was a Zero cupholder's worst nightmare. You must be part of that "other" ilk that populates this board. Thats ok.....if you ever choose to open your eyes, you might enjoy the view.

You are partially correct in that USN and USAAF cupholders were built to superior design specifications. They were particularily robust at higher IAS speeds. More germane to the situation was the simple fact that USN and USAAF pilots had superior training and doctrine that allowed them to both walk and chew bubble gum at the same time. In the air this translated into being able to drink coffee and fly at the same time. The cupholder's superior specifications meerly aided the pilot in this task.

After the AVG encountered Zeros and blew up a few dozen, it was downgraded from "Crate" to "EZ Kill"
(they did you know....the AVG shot down lots of Zeros)

I was wondering what other catering advantages to USAAF had over the Japanese...........what was the snack capacity of say a P-38.

Cheetos shouldn't be a problem for either side....as they are lighter than air(scientific fact).......but the Ritz must require some modification...like extra turbo charging........am I right?
