Yes, it is a I-36* class. Would you care to be more specific?

And yes, I was careful to find a pic without the hull number! So no, it's not I-370, but they were both kaiten carriers.

I-372? - lost in an air raid at Yokosuka on 18 July, 1945.

The sinking description sort of fits:
"18 July 1945:
The I-372 suffers a near miss during an attack on Yokusuka by Grumman TBF "Avenger" torpedo-bombers and F6F "Hellcat" fighter-bombers from Task Force 38's USS ESSEX (CV-9), RANDOLPH (CV-15), SHANGRI-LA (CV-38) and the BELLEAU WOOD (CVL-24). A near miss amidships ruptures the I-372's starboard cargo hold. She sinks slowly despite the desperate efforts of her crew to keep her afloat. All hands survive."

So i'll go with I-363 - sunk by a mine after the war was over. She was also a Kaiten carrier.

OK - according to Combined Fleets site:
"I-361, I-363, I-366, I-370, and I-372 were later fitted to each carry five Kaiten."

Feinder already said it was not I-361, I-370, I-372. I've guessed I-363 (no response), but that only leaves I-366 - "6 May 1945:
Around noon, the I-366 is conducting kaiten launching exercises off Hikari prior to her departure with the "Shimbu” kaiten group the next day, she grazes a magnetic mine and her stern planes and propellers are damaged. A tug arrives from Hikari and takes the submarine in tow. She undergoes repairs at Kure Navy Yard, but cannot take part in the Shimbu mission with the I-367."

So maybe its when she is damaged by a mine. However, it says I-367 is taking part in the kaiten mission, which seems to contradict the previous statement.

Further research on the site says I-367 was also converted to carry 5 kaiten, and it survived the war. I guess it could be her, although it doesn't make a specific claim to battle damage. She was sunk after the war by gunfire.

So i think Feinder is referring to the D-1 class, i.e. the I-361 to I-374. It apparently is NOT I-361,363, 366, 367, 370, 372, or at least they have already been guessed and not said to be correct.

Yeah...I am referring to the I 36, (two digit number), and not a 3 digit type boat.
The source I am looking at (with pic) seems to indicate this is the I 36.
We may also be the victims of photo misidentification from many years ago ?[:)]

Did it say why she was listing to starboard???

Looking at this photo, it really looks like this boat has a snorkel (curved thing on the conning tower, which i am assuming is at the STERN of the conning tower (given the orientation of the snorkel), and thus the mystery boat is listing to starboard). Did your source say anything about I-36 being fitted with one? IIRC, some of the D-1 class were.

Studying this pic even more, i am wondering if we are seeing a scuttling ceremony... which could make this I-369... arrghh...

EDIT: Don't think this is a scuttling ceremony - USN took off the war equipment before scuttling them. Also, I-369 was supposed to be an avgas carrier, no record of her carrying kaitens in Combined Fleets TROM.
