The jungle fighting is nice cause its a fun close quarters shoot-out in exotic locales where everyone gets some action and a fair bodycount is racked up by both sides. A win-win situation to be sure. Who says both sides can't be winners in a battle? This is preferrable to the tank battles of Europe where AVFs tend to pop with a single hit and often never get a chance to get a shot off before they are out of the fight.

Anyone who hasn't sampled the 'Deadly Diversion' campaign should give it a try. Its a nice little shoot-em-up amongst the pineapple and coconut groves. When I did it, I had to chop up my own fruit salad to have on the side before starting each battle.

That is strange. I must consult the Eye of Agmotto.

I think the reason the European fronts and N. Africa are more popular is because of familiarity. Almost everyone knows of Hitler and Stalin. Everyone does know of Churchill and Patton. While a large part are US gamers, and like to play for the home team; the Germans, Russians, and British are all familiar to the majority; even without studying the war. Whereas the Japanese are somewhat a mystery. If my ex girlfriend and TBT are any indication, they are completely insane to a person, suicidal and fanatical. So the Pacific tends to be pushed back as a somehow less importatn part of the war, save for when the two nukes were dropped on Japan. A HS history book, while somewhat scarce on details, have at least a little on the Euopean fronts. Usually a paragraph mentioning the Holocaust, and a couple mentioning D Day. And something saying Hitler was bad. Maybe a sentance thrown in somewhere.

It is a real shame that kids are not taught more in history class. I always thought we should be tought about war. Mostly the horros of it. Leave the heros for the fantacy books.

I do have agree. Its jsut a matter of familiarity.

hm.....interesting to read that even in the US the Pacific campaign is not an eye catcher.

For me, as German, the European war is my favorite simple beacuse of familarity. However, i have to confess that I do not stick so much with the Eastern front...mainly because the war there was much uglier and more brutal than on the Western front. Wounded were often killed, both sides often refused to take prisoners and the partisan warfare was the ugliest of all....beside holocaust.

So, I stick to the Western front. It has - from the German perspective - also all elements from a classic Greek tragedy if you look on persons like Rommel, v. d. Heydte, von Schwerin etc. Those men were - at least in 1994 - no (longer) nazis - and had to decide if they still fight to defend Germany or to activly change sides. They were in a real "dilemma".

Do you know that 116. PzDiv was kept in reserve to seize SS and SD offices in the cae that the assassination of Hitler would ave been successfull? *s* In my mind, it is stuff for a fictious scenario....116 fights SS in Paris..

I agree. But there seems to be a vested interest in keeping things hidden from view. Of course, it's been some years since I was in school. That was back when clinton was in office, Janet Reno ordered a kid taken at gunpoint, and Clinton had to bang perhaps the dumbest ***** in the history of man besides Paris Hilton. I do have three cousins in elementary school; 1st grade. But their parents are stupid.

Considering that the USA was fighting the war on two fronts, was anything learned by the experiences from one front that could be applied to the other?

It would be interesting to create a time line of all the US Army/Marine amphibious operations/assaults including PTO, MTO and ETO operations with some sort of after action report on each that might indicate some learning curve or some evolution of method.

We are all familiar with political bickering that could have divided the US and UK forces in north-west Europe and I am sure we have all heard about the inter-national rivalry which turned into loathing between the US generals and the British high command in Europe which was saved by Eisenhower's intelligence. But was there also an intra service rivalry between US generals in the ETO and the PTO? If so was Marshall the one who smoothed the waters or was it simply a matter of distance?

Almost impossible to design since all units are on the same side.

Really? German vs German is the same as Roman vs Roman, right? In a case like this, tactical expertise would be all that mattered.

Yes, a balanced Civil War in WWII scenario WOULD be very hard to design, I can see that. The closest to realism would be in the fractioning of the Balkans, with the loyalists going against the newly-arrived communists.

A series of scenarios like this could provide a bridge from SPWaW into the modern era. I've mentioned that the partisan units of various countries, while inexperienced, DO pack some punch if used wisely.

I'm not very experienced when it comes to scenario design, but I have successfully created some PBEM games where both sides are the same nation (e.g. Germans Vs Germans). The game tends to call one side by their actual name, and the other side is referred to as the 'Red Team' or something similar. If you're using a custom map, you often need to play with the retreat / reinforcement hexes to get it to work, but I've managed it a few times (including a Russian civil war game against Viking that was very interesting).

I assume it's the same using the scenario editor? [&:]
