Your king and queen should have called them battalions then.
Regiments are formed and disbanded by Acts of Parliament. But things like the Royal Artillery and Royal Tank Regiment etc. are treated as single regiments. Like the other regiments, they are composed of battalions.

Every piece of official documentation labels them as regiments. They shall be labeled as regiments. On the other hand, the infantry is usually labeled something like 3/King's Own Fish & Chips London Regiment. These we can consider battalions since there are other parts of the regiment. But there is only one 12th Field Regiment.
In a Alt WWI scenario I'm working on, I use the Bn symbol on the unit & use Rgt in the unit name (27th Va Rgt).
PS: Here's a scary sounding (to Americans) real-life British regiment..
8th Bn, City of London Regiment (Post Office Rifles).
