OK - one website says Littorio took 3 torp hits at Taranto and was "damaged"... i'm not sure about that, as another website says it was Vittorio Veneto ... and it doesn't really give details about damage (i think USN "officially" calls several ships sunk at PH as "damaged".)

Nope, Littorio won't get the prize as i found this:

"Littorio – sunk in shallow water by three torpedoes in the Battle of Taranto, later raised, then renamed Italia after the Italian surrender. Given to the United States at the end of the war and scrapped in the 1950s."

Littorio's bow grounded in the shallow harbor. Had she been at sea.....she would have been in serious trouble if they couldn't correct quickly the severe bow trim that resulted. I've seen diagrams of the below water damage.....I doubt she would have survived, unless the Italian DC teams had been quick enough to counterflood. On the off chance that she didn't quickly go down or capsize, she would have been crippled due to the level of water and the potential flooding of machinery spaces......that would have left her vulnerable to a British counterstroke.

Better example than Nevada was Littorio after attack on Taranto. Struck by 3 torpedoes, was beached 6 hours 24 minutes after last torpedo hit, to help with rescue action.

They both kissed the bottom and both are disqualified. If they go into the mud, they are "sunk" even if salvageable.

The HMS Formidable is plain impossible to sink...I call it the HMS Indestructible [:'(]

USS Minneapolis was hit by 2 during the november 30, 1942 battle.

IJN Takao was hit by 2 sub torpedoes during the leyte battles.
Although never repaired,she did not sink either.

A lot of 2-hitters, so far no 3-hitters... i am wondering if some tanker in the Atlantic might have done it.

Possible winner - SS Tornus - according to COMBINED FLEETS:

Indian Ocean. The I-26 attacks the 8,054-ton British tanker TORNUS. First, Kusaka fires three torpedoes, of which two hit. The TORNUS starts to list but soon manages to counterflood. The I-26 then fires two more torpedoes from the opposite side, but fails to sink the tanker. "

not sure if any of the torps from the second attack actually hit and exploded, however.

During this battle on 24 October 1944, she was attacked by American carrier-based aircraft armed with bombs and torpedoes. After taking 17 bomb and 20 torpedo hits and 18 near misses, the ship capsized to port, and sank at 19:35hrs." That account was from wikipedia.

she didn't make it back to port, no how, no way - so can't have record for surviving the most torpedo hits and getting back to port...

If we look at extent of damage survived by torpedo hit, then what about the New Orleans? She had her bow ripped off by one torpedo at Tassafaronga, but still made it home...

There are differing accounts as to whether the Bismarck was hit by two or three torpedoes. The torpedoes did not sink her, but did disable her rudder. She was sunk the next day by concentrated fire from HMS Rodney, et al.

I think most accounts go for two strikes, the first failing to penetrate her belt armour amid ships and the second knocking out the steering gear.

Nope, no dice - we are just going by numbers here... if we were going by extent of damage, maybe OHIO (the tanker) would get it - she was hit by 1 torp and several bombs. She made it to port, but never out again...

But sorry, nope - number of real torp hits is what count here...

How many did it take to sink the Indianapolis?

Answered my own question from US Navy internet sites. They say 2.
