From the quick experiment I did, I agree with you - that the only limit is how much supply you want to spend on expanding.

If you would take a look at that (when you have time) and report back, that would be most helpful DFalcon[;)][8D]

The largest facility that still had an expansion button was 250. All the ones I checked with less than 250 could expand and all the factories with more could not. That would put the expansion limit at 500. There are HI facilities that start the game larger than this.

As Gary mentioned it is probably a supply limitation. My supplies in Japan are not over flowing. The biggest stock piles are in the 20-30k range and this would put the limit at 200-300.

I don't think experienced Japanese players expand repair shipyards to full size. Until RHS, I doubt any Japanese player built merchant yards either - since you had "AKs to burn." The cost of shipyards is a major burdon on your economy - and you don't need to build warship yards. You might expand repair yards a little - but doubling big ones seems not to be cost effective. You don't really need them - although more small repair yards is useful for many small ships.

Tokyo was the only major repair base I expanded. 71 was a bit small for major warships. 142 seems a bit large, but I usually leave 1 capital ship and a couple of small ships. I control my repair yards rather closely, especially if I have high durability ships to repair. I don't want Tokyo's repair yard wasted on merchant shipping if a CV or BB is awaiting repair.

Edit: I expand small repair yards simply because a yard <20 is useless except for tiny ships.

I hope he reads this and delivers with a cut-N-paste [:D][:D][:D]

I have. In the few times I've dabbled into Jap Production I've only ever looked at aircraft, engine and vehicle factories. Never gave shipyards a second thought. Oh and thanks for the clarification on the cost to expand (missed that in the manual[8|]).

I went a little nuts in my current PBEM game and I expanded Tokyo to 142, Osaka/Kobe to 68, Maizuru to 210/220 and now I am expanding Kobe/Hiroshima to about 190. I could have probably done without the expansion to Maizuru, and saved myself 110,000 supply.
