The Pirates' 1948 outlook: the team is essentially unchanged from 1947, but a few younger players have moved up from the minors. KG made no trades during the off-season, preferring to build from the inside.

The latest on the Warren Spahn career watch: two straight Cy Young Awards. His style is maturing, and he's striking out fewer batters, but his endurance/stuff has increased, and look at the WHIP ratio. More and more he is developing into a finesse pitcher.

Cincinnati, April 19, 1948. On opening day Warren Spahn blanks the Reds with a CG 2-0 victory. He allowed 4 hits and 4 walks while striking out 5.

April 20. The Cubs come to town, and Don Newcombe completes a 11-2 win over Clint Hartung.
