as you can see, Darwin is nuked... recon every day... nukes with every attack... I proposed a house rule about replenishing BBs/CAs. Level 6 port for BBs and 5 for CAs but Swift thought an AE would be enough to replenish at EVERY port. Well, this will lead to far too many (no matter from what side) naval bombardments. Be it as he wishes... so far I replenished at Soerabaja, now I will do that at Kendari as the AE is only two days out...

Three Chinese divisions are forced to retreat. 5 Allied units are sitting in the woods and mountains West and East of this hex but we have ordered our troops to enter Chungking. We will just siege the base, impossible to take it anyway - probably impossible to dislodge our troops also... The units in the woods could cut off our troops but reinforcements are coming from the South to keep the road open. The assault on Wuchow and Kweiyang are running, we will soon march towards Nanning also...

the bombardments have no effect at all, Allied av is going down by only a couple of points every turn. Not like in Changsha where we reduced the Allied av by 500+ just from doing bombardments - still can´t figure out why they were SO effective there. We will just have to deliberate attack, but the base isn´t out of supply for sure, even if the supply level will be low, but that´s the situation at all Chinese bases. Wooden hex and probably 6-9 forts, so we expect to see 20-25.000 casualties until the base will fall. Means around 800 assault points disabled (only around 2 or 3 % are destroyed in the end).

The Imperial Japanese Navy sunk the US battleship Idaho in a one sided fight 240 miles East of Paramushiro Jima!!


USS Idaho (BB-42), 1919-1947

USS Idaho, a 32,000-ton New Mexico class battleship, was built at Camden, New Jersey. Commissioned in March 1919, she steamed to Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, in July and then transited the Panama Canal to the Pacific, where she was based for the next dozen years. During that time, Idaho took part in the Battle Fleet's routine of drills and exercises, which extended from the Caribbean to Hawaii and as far south as Chile. She also cruised to Alaskan waters in 1920 and to New Zealand and Australia in 1925. In September 1931, the battleship entered the Norfolk Navy Yard for extensive reconstruction.

Emerging from the shipyard in October 1934, Idaho's appearance had been transformed. Gone were the "cage" masts that were such a distinguishing feature of American battleships of her era, now replaced with a tower superstructure supporting up-to-date gunfire controls. As one of the Battle Fleet's most modern units, Idaho returned to the Pacific in 1935 to again take up her peacetime work of preparing for possible combat.

With World War II raging in Europe, Idaho was transferred to the Atlantic Fleet in June 1941. Based in Iceland during much of the rest of that year, she helped cover convoys against the threat of German raiders during a period of "undeclared war". Following the devastating 7 December 1941 Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor, she was sent back to the Pacific, arriving in January 1942. For the next year, Idaho operated along the U.S. west coast and in the Hawaiian area. In April 1943, she went north to the Aleutians, where she supported the landings at Attu in May and Kiska in August.

Idaho next joined the drive across the Central Pacific, taking part in the Makin landing in November 1943, the Kwajalain invasion in February 1944, a bombardment of New Ireland in March, the Marianas operation in June and July, and the assault on the Palaus in September. Following an overhaul, she returned to the combat zone in time to provide heavy gunfire support for the February 1945 invasion of Iwo Jima. Idaho's 14" guns were again active bombarding Okinawa from late March into May 1945. While off Okinawa, she was damaged by a "Kamikaze" on 12 April, but returned to action after brief repairs.

The end of the Pacific War in August 1945 found Idaho preparing for the invasion of Japan. She was present in Tokyo Bay when Japan formally surrendered on 2 September, and shortly thereafter steamed back across the Pacific and through the Panama Canal, arriving at Norfolk, Virginia, in mid-October. Generally inactive from then on, USS Idaho was decommissioned in July 1946 and sold to a scrapper in November 1947.

B5N Kates were also able to sink the modern CL Honolulu, part of the BB Idaho bombardment TF!!

USS Honolulu (CL-48), 1938-1959
USS Honolulu, a 9650-ton Brooklyn class light cruiser, was built at the New York Navy Yard. Commissioned in June 1938, she made her shakedown cruise to England, then operated for nearly a year in the Atlantic and Caribbean. Honolulu was transferred to the Pacific in May 1939 and had her base moved to Pearl Harbor in November 1940. Damaged by a Japanese bomb in the 7 December 1941 attack on Pearl Harbor, repairs allowed her to begin wartime operations in January 1942.

After several months of escort duties between the United States and the south Pacific, in late May 1942 Honolulu was sent to the Aleutians to counter enemy advances into that area. During August, she bombarded Kiska and supported the occupation of Adak. Following an overhaul, the cruiser returned to the south Pacific, where she participated in the final months of the Guadalcanal Campaign. In the Battle of Tassafaronga at the end of November 1942, Honolulu was the only U.S. cruiser present that was not torpedoed. During the first half of 1943, she was part of the surface striking forces that spearheaded the push up the Solomons. In May she bombarded the Japanese bases at Munda and Vila and in July assisted in the Rendova-New Georgia invasion. Honolulu engaged enemy warships in the Battle of Kula Gulf on 6 July and the Battle of Kolombangara on 13 July. Torpedo damage to her bow, received in the latter action, forced her to return to the U.S. for repairs.

Honolulu was back in the south Pacific by early December 1943. For the rest of that year and into 1944, she took part in the Bougainville operation and other actions intended to isolate the Japanese strongpoint at Rabaul. In June 1944, she steamed northwards to participate in the Marianas invasion, during which she bombarded Saipan and Guam. Honolulu also covered the landings in the Palaus in September and at Leyte in October. While off Leyte on 20 October 1944, she was the victim of a aerial torpedo attack. Hit amidships, Honolulu again required repairs in the United States. This work, which included extensive updating of her secondary battery and an increase in her beam, was not completed until after the end of the Pacific War. After brief duty as a training ship, Honolulu was decommissioned at the Philadelphia Navy Yard in February 1947. She remained in the Reserve Fleet there for twelve years and was sold for scrapping in late 1959.

though I have to say, 1200 points worth is Noumea alone for the Allied (which is far too high for that place but that´s still from UV). So with Noumea, the Allied would have 4000+ points - which is still far too few to prevent a 4:1 in 1/43! [8D]

But as I´ve said before, the game isn´t going for points, nor autovictory. Still the points are good to have them in the game as it´s a good way to compare your campaign with others...

OUCH! 11 bombers are lost. 8 to flak 3 to ops, but the airfield is nearly closed. At the moment there is a huge armada that just passed Lautern sailing towards the North coast of Australia. We will try to take a base with our intial wave that is assault loaded. It is planned to land the rest of our troops in a secure harbour to avoid having them 20-25% disabled just from the landing. Depending on the reaction of my opponent we will then bring in more and more troops if needed to take the North coast. We will prepare our landings with more naval bombardments and air attacks on the airfields to make the use of Allied airpower against our invasion impossible. Considering the fact that more Allied aircraft must be brought in by rail, they would only be torched on the ground while being repaired. Only uncertainty is the fat, dark aircraft symbol at Broome. We can´t take out this airfield so those 200-250 aircraft (max with our stacking rule) could be flown to Derby, Wyndham and Darwin. But at least two of those airfields will be closed for sure, I would guess I will be able to close all three of them. And besides that, I expect "only" to see around 100 aircraft at Broome. We are 7 months into the war and I have yet to spot a TF that goes down South to NZ or Australia. [&:] All bases of Hawaii have been massively built up as well as the bases in the far North (where we see fat, dark airfield and port symbols also). So it really seems to me that Swift was thinking I would go for Pearl (which I never even dreamt about) and he´s now planning to really take the Northern route - which would be absolutely bloody for him, I can guarentee that. As soon as he would be in range of Japan I would throw the kitchen sink at him and 200 Betties would surely be a warm welcome. A base 13 hexes off Japan that can be built up to level 4 at best wouldn´t be worth the losses he would take...

But in return this would also mean I would have free hand in Australia... perhaps not just taking the North coast? I doubt I will go further South...

If there´s no counterfire then CAs are definetely the better ships to shoot up airfields... they do at least the same damage but can go in from 6 hexes, and are more agile when it comes down to evading airattacks... very good result... as usual it was all about the recon before... Wyndham will be the place I will land. Normally this should be the worst place (after Darwin of course, where I would never land due to the big CD guns), but with the way Swift has spread out his troops on the North coast it will be a cake walk - hopefully! [:D] A bit more resistance in the past with fighters (I have no idea why he hasn´t upgraded all his bombers to useful types, same goes for all the fighters that could have been Hurricanes a long time already) and more engineers and ground units on the North coast could make it "untakable" at this date. One thing is sure, Swift can´t blame me for blitzing through the map, in fact I´m feeling I´ve advanced slower than most people do, so he had enough time to build up everywhere. In my game against Hortlund I would dream about an invasion of Wyndham, this would be the grave for half of the IJN and we´re 1 month behind this game.

Herring missed again with her torps! There´s an Allied cruiser TF coming from the East, so this TF will move out again... what the heck is Swift doing? Isn´t it enough that he lost a BB and a modern CL? His cruisers were spotted in the morning and in torp range of my Betties so all his cruisers could have been sunk already. Needless to say that not a single bomber took off the whole day... they didn´t even try to engage the TF...[8|]

following the naval bombardment we sent in the IJA mediums from Lautern, killing more aircraft on the ground and making the airfield 100% closed. We can now keep it closed easily... we don´t expect to see more than a couple of ships lost to bombers with our invasion going in at Wyndham. A couple in the worst case I must say... again, the Zeroes stayed home for whatever reason...

also Derby is really hit hard by our airforce today... we didn´t manage to get the naval bombardment this turn as the distance was still to big so we were forced to send in the airforce without seeing a nav bombardment before. But flak was surprisingly nearly not existant and the fighter resistance was light. Kittyhawks showed up and shot down a Zero. Swift already received some 80 Kittyhawks that could be used up here, coupled with 150 Hurricanes this would make it hard for me. Not to talk about the fact that he had 7 months of time to build up the defenses, regarding flak, CD and some more inf units... serves me good... [:D]

Swift is commiting suicide with his Chinese. Two turns ago a single div entered Kweiyang. Yes the follow unit order isn´t working like it should so I ordered all to move, thinking at least a couple of units would enter together. Only one two turns ago, another one last turn. Seeing this Swift thought it would be a good idea to shock attack. It would have been last turn, but it was for sure a bad idea this turn. We had now half a dozen units at Kweiyang and with this attack I already see Kweiyang falling "easily" against my troops that will attack in a couple of turns... then we will march towards Kunming - which was our primary target right from the start, as this is the only 300 ressource base the Chinese have in this area... and as mentioned before, we´re really lacking ressources for our industry... The 300 won´t help us alot anyway, wonder how many will be damaged...

ANNOYING... but as a fact, overall those mine laying subs are doing NO damage at all. Wildcats??? VF-2??? CV Lexington is in the area!!! We aren´t flying any nav search from Koepang as we were focussing on keeping the airfield of Derby surpressed. We even swapped out our 54 IJN torp bombers with IJA mediums to have more punch against Derby´s airfield. This seems to be proven wrong now, as we didn´t spot any Allied ships this turn. We are lucky because it seems Swift has some leaking Cap over Derby, alerting us that Lexington must be max 2 hexes off Derby. We didn´t expect Swift to do anything against our invasion of Northern Australia so we felt safe to take our torp bombers back. They are flown in this turn, but we are taking KB two hexes back, while sending all our TFs straight to Wyndham. If I would have to guess, then there are 2 US CVs and all the British, so it wouldn´t be as one sided as I would like. We have nearly 450 carrier based planes, and 100 in reserve at Kendari. Our hr doesn´t allow more than 450 carrier based planes in a hex. I told Swift that I have spotted VF-2 and am aware of some carriers in the area. I hope he now will retreat to the West again. We have now a Sentai of Helens and 12 DinahIIs flying nav search from Koepang and 54 Zeroes, 27 Betties and 27 Nells for a strike on the Allied carriers if they show up. Hopefully we don´t react and stay out of Allied bomber range with KB. But all of our invasion TFs (some 300 ships) are now in danger of being clobbered. This could become a real blood bath now...[:(] We will see what happens...

We take Wyndham easily with our first attack, so far we lost one MSW, the damaged ships are disbanded into port. Being alerted by spotting VF-2 we have moved in 4 full Sentais of Oscars from Kendari and Timor setting them on 90% Cap. Most of them are around 15 fatigue, the airfield is 47% damaged, airbase 83% damaged. I expect to see around 60 Oscars in the air covering all my 300 ships at Wyndham. If Swift decides to send in his carriers than I really expect to see a blood bath next turn, with the outcome unknown. While we´re definetely in the better position, I just don´t want to engage more than 2 Allied carriers at once with KB. Last time we engaged 2 US carriers we sank one, but had 2 of our carriers damaged as well (of which both are now repaired and with KB again). If Swift decides to retreat, then it will be a very boring next turn... [:D]

unbelievable but true, while losing a BB and a modern CL earlier, he just continues to send those slow TFs to bombard Paramushiro Jima... sorry, but that´s more than careless! [:-] this turn 54 Nells launched against this TF at 12 hexes range but Swift came away as the aircraft failed to locate the TF... really careless... he knows that I know that Lexington (and for sure more than one CV) is cruising around the North or West coast of Australia, so it could be really tempting to attack with my CVEs again... as those bombardments have yet to do real damage, I could also just wait for my Nells killing off another BB at some point... they had already at least half a dozen chances to do that so far...

I really can´t see the Chinese front holding really long. While the Chinese supply situation must be critical, we also have severe supply problems, not just in China. This campaign seems to be soaking up all our supply reserves. My major fronts don´t have as much supply as I would like.
