I have decided to start my attacks at Hengchow and not to starve those units to death as this takes too long. We will see how my first attack will work. Expect to see level 9 forts and my troops to be shredded in the first attack. If the supply level of the enemy is low, then all my following attacks will have the chance to be more succesful though...

our attack goes in and I´m pretty happy with the results. Forts were at the expected Maginot line level 9 but the Chinese supply situation must be totally desperate already as the defenders adjusted av looks horrible, therefore our losses are only half as high as I´ve expected them to be. Moving out three divs to Changsha and ordered three fresh divs to move in. Next attack in a couple of days. As it looks now, it seems we can take Hengchow easier than Changsha even though here are level 9 forts and as many defending troops. If this wasn´t just a very lucky die roll for us, I´m hoping to take the base within the next four to six weeks.

god damn, I´m asking me if this can really happen twice! Just like at Midway, out of a sudden the enemy CVs pop up two hexes off the base! Again, there more than 40 search aircraft on nav search and again it is possible for the Allied CVs to sneak in unseen. I´m sure the carriers moved in at full speed, but to counter this, I have placed 6 subs 12 hexes East of Wake to either sight the enemy, or at least sight one of the enemy´s search aircraft to alert me.

And once again it seems Miller is too lucky for us... [8|] TONIGHT, TWO!!!!! TFs arrived at Wake. One TF was already there... what can I say... one day later, one day earlier... [8|]

BANZAI! At Midway, IMO the Allied were lucky in every aspect! But lucky or not, you can´t be 100% lucky everytime! And this time, Miller will surely be thinking that he had no luck at all! Guess what, the two Allied CV TFs got SEPERATED!!! [&o] This CV TF took position 120 miles SE of Wake and the other one that should have followed ended up 180 miles SE of Wake!

And as I have mentioned before, Wake is becoming a fortress, after the fall of Midway, we immediately transfered Kates to Wake. No Betties / Nells because the airfield is only level 3 yet and I knew, if the enemy carriers would show up, they would again close in enough to be in torp range of the Kates. Out of 54 Kates and 54 Zeroes we see a good number attacking (we also have an air HQ at Wake) and with the enemy CV TFs being seperated, the enemy Cap isn´t bullet prove, even though there are again a lot of Marine fighters in the air also. The high exp Navy Wildcat pilots prove to be deadyl against our Zeroes, but still, the Zeroes enable the torp carrying bombers to do their torp runs. Only two Kates were shot down by the enemy fighters. Not like at Midway, when 50+ high exp Betties / Nells only achieved two torp hits on the slow moving BBs, the 40 Kates doing torp runs put 6 fish into CV Enterprise! Needless to say that the ship is confirmed SUNK!

the whole TF is destroyed... mmmm... [:(] lost something like 20 ships today...

and still, we have sunk CV Enterprise, so I wonder if Miller will see this operation as a success... I would cheer if he would have arrived yesterday and two of my TFs wouldn´t be at Wake while only one would have been beat up. As it is now, I´m not that happy with it, even though I should be I guess.

It´s just like that I don´t like losing ships that way... not again...

with the loss of CV Enterprise, I guess this will mean that Miller has to be more carefully in future. This also shows that LBA can put serious harm on his CV fleet, so without nuking my airfields, upcoming invasions could get more than bloody for him.

and here we attack the second carrier TF. Our Zeroes do better against the Wildcats here than against Enterprise´s and Yorktown´s fighters. Those Navy fighter pilots are the best the Allied have and they did a pretty good job against my high exp Zeroes. Even though there are more than enough Navy pilots in the pool for the Allied, replacing a lost 80+ fighter pilot with a 60 exp pilot isn´t a good deal, so every Allied CV fighter pilot counts. The Marine Buffalos were mostly only targets for our Zeroes.

Here are the air losses. A clear victory for us. It seems like Enterprise didn´t launch bombers as they went down with the carrier. That´s excellent, I expected them to bogey out to the other three remaining carriers where they could be used to fill out the losses of high exp pilots of future operations. The Wildcats achieved a kill rate a bit better than 1:1 the Buffalos were nothing but targets so all in all we even achieved a 1.7:1 kill rate in our favour. Not bad against a numerical superiority...




what a great victory this would have been if my TFs would have left Wake to the North again and being out of range of the carriers...

Tokyo news reports the sinking of the first fleet carrier of the American Imperialists! BANZAI! BANZAI! BANZAI! A strike consisting of combined nearly 100 first line IJN fighters and torpedoe bombers attacked the enemy´s carriers near fortress Wake, sinking the Yorktown class carrier with 6 well placed torpedoes! The enemy flew several strikes on unarmed merchant ships in this area.



USS Enterprise (CV-6, later CVA-6 and CVS-6), 1938-1958

USS Enterprise, a 19,800-ton Yorktown class aircraft carrier, was built at Newport News, Virginia. Commissioned in May 1938, she made a shakedown cruise to South America, then operated in the Caribbean. In April 1939, Enterprise was ordered to the Pacific, where she was to play an unparalleled role in the great sea war that began with Japan's 7 December 1941 attack on Pearl Harbor.

At the time of that raid, Enterprise was at sea. On 10 December, her planes sank a Japanese submarine, the first of many enemy ships that would fall victim to her air group. Later in December, she participated in the abortive Wake Island relief expedition. In February 1942, after escorting convoys to the South Pacific, Enterprise attacked Japanese positions in the Marshalls. During the following three months, she hit Wake and Marcus islands, covered the Doolittle raid on Japan and was en route to the South Pacific when the Battle of the Coral Sea took place in early May.

In June 1942, Enterprise played a vital role in the Battle of Midway, in which her planes sank or helped sink three Japanese aircraft carriers and a cruiser. She was next involved in the Guadalcanal Campaign, including the landings there in early August, the Battle of the Eastern Solomons later in that month and the Battle of the Santa Cruz Islands in October. Badly hit by Japanese bombs in August and October, Enterprise was the only available fleet carrier in the area in November and, despite her damaged condition, launched her air group against enemy ships during the climactic Naval Battle of Guadalcanal. Remaining in the Solomons area into the Spring of 1943, she received the Presidential Unit Citation for her exploits there.

In late 1943 and early 1944 Enterprise participated in the Gilberts and Marshalls invasions and in attacks on Japanese bases in the Central and Southern Pacific. In June and July, she took part in the Marianas operation and the Battle of the Philippine Sea. From August to December, her planes joined in more raids and again engaged enemy ships during the Battle of Leyte Gulf in late October. At the end of 1944 Enterprise received a special night operations air group, with which she took part in the Luzon campaign, strikes in the South China Sea, the Iwo Jima invasion, raids on the Japanese home islands and the Okinawa campaign. She was repaired locally for bomb damage received on 13 March 1945 and Kamikaze damage on 11 April, but had to the return to the U.S. after being badly hit by another Kamikaze on 14 May.

Enterprise's repairs were finished in September 1945, after the Japanese surrender. She helped return servicemen from the war zones and was present for the Fleet Review off New York City in October 1945. Inactive after early 1946, Enterprise decommissioned in February 1947. While laid up, she was redesignated CVA-6 in October 1952 and CVS-6 in August 1953. After the failure of efforts to make her into a memorial, USS Enterprise was sold for scrapping in July 1958.

Wasp will arrive in May IIRC, so this would bring the Allied CV strenght to 430 carrier based aircraft in summer again. With our rule about max 450 carrier based ac this would be a full strike force.

No, there are no battlewagons around, "only" the two CV TFs were spotted. And there are also no invasion TFs. With Enterprise lost, this will buy us some time I guess, with only three CVs an invasion against my strongholds could be too dangerous.

I´ve sent my special Samurais to Wuchow! [;)] Seriously, what you see is the total assault value of ALL troops there, which are a couple of divisions and you also see what is doing the bombardment, which would be my art units only. The divisions are only holding their position.

Ooookay/... bombardment is for mere ashigarus and peasants.[8|]

After the disastrous loss of CV Enterprise near Wake, the remaining Allied carriers flee to the East towards Midway...

We have spotted a lot of Chinese troops now marching towards Kweiyang. There are over a dozen units at Kunming, would Miller have sent them BEFORE doing his desperate deliberate attacks here, he would have had a good chance to drive my troops out again. DD Shaw, operating with 5 other destroyers near Midway was sunk in a bold attack by the Japanese sub I-153! BANZAI! BANZAI! BANZAI!



USS Shaw (DD-373), 1936-1946
USS Shaw, a 1,500-ton Mahan class destroyer built at the Philadelphia Navy Yard, Pennsylvania, was commissioned in September 1936. She made a trans-Atlantic shakedown cruise in 1937, steamed to South America in mid-1938, and transfered to the Pacific soon thereafter. Operations along the west coast and in Hawaiian waters followed in 1939-41. When the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor on 7 December 1941, Shaw was in drydock at the Navy Yard there. Enemy bombs set her afire and her forward magazines exploded, severing her bow and wrecking her bridge area.

However, Shaw's midships and stern portions were still essentially intact. Following temporary repairs at Pearl Harbor, in February 1942 she went to the Mare Island Navy Yard for a new bow and general overhaul. When this work was completed in late June 1942, Shaw spent several months in training and convoy escort duties. Sent to the South Pacific in October 1942, she participated in the Battle of the Santa Cruz Islands late in that month. While supporting the Guadalcanal Campaign, she ran aground at New Caledonia on 10 January 1943, requiring a trip to Pearl Harbor for extensive repairs.

Shaw returned to the war zone in October 1943 and took part in operations around New Guinea and New Britain. She was hit in an air attack off Cape Gloucester on 26 December 1943. After repair of that damage, she operated in the Central Pacific, including participation in the invasion of Guam. From October 1944 into 1945, Shaw escorted Western Pacific convoys and help liberate Luzon and other parts of the Philippines. When the Pacific war ended in August 1945, Shaw had just completed another overhaul, including major enhancement of her anti-aircraft armament. However, she was too old for retention in the post-war fleet and was sent to the U.S. east coast for inactivation. Decommissioned in October 1945, USS Shaw was scrapped in July 1946.

the biggest problem with the upcoming assault on Wuchow (as soon as Hengchow has fallen) will be the fact that Wuchow is a wooden hex while Changsha and Hengchow both were clear hexes. This will cause at least twice as many casualties on our side and I have the feeling that the defenders of Wuchow also still have enough supplies, at least when I look at all the flak bursts from the two base forces when my bombers go in at lower alt.

I fear the enemy reinforcements will arrive earlier than my divisions. Could get narrow if the enemy attacks at the right time and gets a little lucky with the die rolls... a dozen enemy units are marching in, this could double the enemy´s assault value in the worst case...
