Aye I need to assess the overall situation my gut feel is I have been over optimisitic and may need to pull back otherwise I am going to waste troops.

I think they really benefit from large airfields (5 or more). They really were fairly sophisticated aircraft and needed care. Especially true of the E version.

Yeah I know he is grumpy but he chose PDU and lets fact it its a massive bonus for the Japanese.

I had started a discussion with him in his AAR about the P-38 (how could I dare, afterall I know how a JFB is thinking [;)]). But the discussion ended right after starting it in agreeing that we don´t agree. I´ve asked how many frontline fighters he will mass produce in a couple of months and how many were historical. Not to talk about how well R&D will work and how many hundred/thousands of fighters he will produce earlier than they appeared in real life (not to talk about the total numbers).

So he´s pissed off by three dozen P-38s 4 months ahead of what he would call acceptable while himselve probably already producing far more Zeroes and Oscars and in total (compared to real life) he will produce thousands of first line ac instead of the crap that was built in real life. Being a JFB or AFB is ok with me (just like I´m a JFB that took control over the Allied for my first PBEM), but you should never lose common sense IMO.

And we are talking about 50 fighters total. Not going to change the game one whit. And as a sop to JFBs the world over, production of P38s of all types is very sparse in AE. You will not see swarms of them like you did in WITP. The first massive American air superiority land fighter that Japan is really going to have to deal with is the P47. You will see lots and lots of them.

BTW, did he use the "experimental" tojo unit located in China in the early days of the war?

with PDU on and with enough other fighters in the pool you can downgrade them if you have at least 25 substitute fighters in the pool. With PDU off, you can´t I guess.

[/blockquote]In my experience you can't do this after you've lost air superiority to the other side. If I'm right about my impression, it may already have been too late by the time I suggested it. I thought that perhaps just after the first couple of fights the computer would judge him sufficiently in control of the air to ship off the planes. I assume it's an abstraction that presumes local assets are available, like the ability to move ships that are out of fuel.

Not really much to sy this turn shell game in Java awaiting the invasion I will do an analysis of the likely landing spots at some stage
 
Merak in the north or the base witht he big AF in the south are good candidates as is Kalidja, Kragen and Sama whatever you call it.
 
I have all of them garrioned with reaction forces floating around.

Semarang seems to be the natural landing point. It allows the rapid capture of Tjilitjap and Djokjakarta ( essential to prevent evacuation ), splits the enemy defences and allows the Japanese to defeat the Duthc in detail --- thus allowing the invasion force to be significantly smaller than it otherwise would be. If he's a good ground commander he'll bottle you up in one base ( probably Batavia ) whilst taking the other and then turning around to mop you up... I, personally, would take Soerabaja first as that would leave my forces in Batavia at the end of the conquest ready to hope across to Sumatra in just a day.

I estimate you'd only need 60 to 65% of the invasion force you'd otherwise need if you landed at either end of the island ( 15% pins, 45% takes the southern half before joining up and heading north ) and that means the other 40 to 35% of your force can be used elsewhere to mount another operation in parallel maintaining the operational tempo - which is crucial. Frankly if an opponent landed anywhere other than Semarang I'd makr them down as either:
a) unimaginative and stolid - the majority
b) someone who was highly insightful and had double-bluffed the situation taking a seemingly inferior option in order to disrupt my defensive plans - a tiny minority.

So, is String, in your opinion, a reasonable and stolid player, a good player who can see opportunities and exploit them or, lastly and least likely, the sort of player who sees military opportunities etc but then combines that insight with mind-games?

why even spreading out and defending those places. The enemy will come ashore just as if your troops aren´t there so they only get wrecked and IMO you need every dozen av in either Batavia or Soerabaja to hold out a couple of days longer. Putting a not combat worthy unit in front of the Japanese juggernaut only makes it easier for them IMO. It doesn´t take them longer to unload, they don´t take any more losses during unload and all it will result in is one or two Dutch units being trashed for nothing. Playing it out realistic is one thing but that´s it and who says that the invasion is going on realistic. No sense spreading out the units IMO other than to prevent para attacks. But hey, there´s no difference either if the IJN unloads over a "hostile" beach that is held by a Dutch "armored" btn or if they unload at a friendly port that was secured by some paras.

Defend it heavily or evacuate it, if you post there a weak unit he can pursuit with armor and be in Djojakarta ( and java severed in two) at day D+2..

Aye need to think about this a little he may actually go somewhere else as he has lots of options Java is fairly open in AE to conquest.
 
Things to think about I will consider my options

If it was me and I had Palembang I would probably land at Merak and invest and then bypass Batavia with armour.
 
Maybe with a subsidiary landing in the centre trying to avoid bases with forts built up so pick a not obvious choice.

I like Merak too. You don't have to supress 2 major airfields. Semarang is a good target, but can be hit Amercian DBs (with 1000 pounders) and Brit TBs from both Batavia and Soerabaja.

OK decision made I am evaccing no point in fighting somewhere you know you will lose.
