Not only did we have contact but we won the first tank fight hands down!! [:D]

Those M48's the West Germans bought are targets for our T-80's!

You can often tell who is firing or being fired at by the yellow border on the unit selected. In this case, it's our lead T-80 firing and killing 3 WG tanks!

This screen shot shows our attack helicopters moving into the area from 3 sides. Within a short time this will be a hard place to be a West German soldier. [:-]

Good Hunting.

We are continuing to kill WG recon units. This is a really good thing. The less they can see us the better.

Now we have an entire tank battalion across the river and into the Battle of Helmern!

We are in a very good position here! The Germans are strung out in a convoy and are not capable of hitting back as we destroy their formations.

Good Hunting.

The Battle Atteln is also seeing WG losses.

At this point we have hurt the WG forces at little cost to our Battle Group.

Good Hunting.

Only because I am not a trusting soul, we deploy our SPAAA forward with our tank battalion.

There are more WG soldiers here than previously thought. They are coming from everywhere here. We need to unleash our artillery on this area to destroy them in their trucks.

Our parting shot for the turn was to kill yet another of their recon. This recon is HEER though and that's a bit concerning.

Here are our positions at the end of the execution phase.

Unless there are new orders I will continue to press our Task Forces into the areas we have previously identified as our objectives.

I am going to run the next turn this evening with our original objectives. We have West German units moving all over the map. It's time to engage some of those.

Good Hunting.

This looks friggin' awesome, guys. There are *no* Platoon-level cold war wargames out there (talking for PC, of course).

Man, I can't wait to relive my high school days of playing Mechwar '77 and Red Star/White Star :).

Now, if only someone would do 1979's "The Next War", I'd be in Cold War Gone Hot Heaven (yes, I'm playing the TOAWIII scenario until that glorious, if unlikely day). I happen to think '79 was the best "correlation of forces" that the Pact ever had. It was all downhill from there.

But in '79 we were definitely asleep...

Kondor - Our game data goes back to 79. I would bet you could make some scenarios. [:D]

Hell yeah I could! I could even convert over some from those dusty old wargames of mine. Let's see how those M60A1's and 2's fare against some T-64A action! I don't think it'll be real pretty for NATO. No depleted uranium/Chobham armor to hide behind, no Apache choppers, no M1's, TOW-2's, or IIR sights. Nobody really had IC's down-pat just yet, so the Russkies were pretty even on the tech side. Boy, that didn't last long.

Just toe-to-toe with the Russkies with our worn-out hand-me-down armor, demoralized 70's-era 'Nam burnout infantry and some classic rock on our side!

Oh, and the USAF. That might even it up a bit...

PS - I obtained permission from my wife to refer to her erstwhile socialist comrades as "Russkies". Since my new son is 1/2 Russian, no disrespect is intended or implied!

As we start turn 8 we see that there is a West German column just outside Hellarn. The battle is about to begin. Recon is mostly over.

Now it's time to FIGHT!! [X(]

The advantage is to us. Most of those units seem to be Territorial Army and only a few of them HEER. That's a good thing for us.

Good Hunting.

kondor999,

I think you will really enjoy this game. I have been beta testing since last July. Hard to believe a year, and I have not tired of it (even thru all the bugs and changes). Rob and Jim have put a lot of work into this game to get it working fairly smooth. Some of Steve's scenarios have potential of being classics--and will cause you to loose sleep and hair. It is not what I call a "beans and bullet" game. In other works it does not bog down in details of counting every bullet and item of supply. It has a good balance between realism and abstraction. It places you in the roll of a commander and forces you to make hard decisions. AI is not perfect (no AI is), but it will give you a good fight--and will knock you off balance at times. They have an exciting plans for this game as long as people support it. Yeah, I am a fan boy.

This time we will get 29 minutes of turn execution.

We'll see what that looks like when the smoke clears! [:-]
