Thanks BPINisBACK! Will take that counsel.
By the way, I think you meant "Easy as pie." [:)]

The idiom does not refer to the making of a pie, but rather to the act of consuming a pie ("as easy as eating a pie") which is usually a simple and pleasurable experience. The phrase is often interchanged with piece of cake, which shares the same connotation.

Great game and great AAR. What impresses me the most is how you managed to get your tech levels so high in just a little over 3 years; yet at the same time still build so many units. Playing the UK and Russia, for example I generally find that after I invest 1 chit in a research category it takes me about 1 year to gain a tech level. Do you invest more than 1 chit in certain techs?
Can you share with us more details of how you spent your MPPS on research and builds.

Just for fun (yeah right) I ran a test where I focused German research on Anti-Tank, Advanced Tanks, Advanced Aircraft, Advanced Subs, Logistics, Production Technology, Industrial Technology and Spying and Intelligence to see if I could obtain results similar to wie201. By November 1939 I had a research chit in all of these and whenever I gained a tech level I bought a new research chit for that technology. Of course focusing like this on technology means I could not purchase the 3 tanks that wie201 did for the battle of France. It also meant that some other techs, most notably anti-aircraft, fell behind. By February 1943 my technology levels for each of these was as follow:
Anti-Tank: 3
Advanced Tanks: 4
Advanced Aircraft 3
Advanced Subs: 3
Logistics: 3
Production Technology: 4
Industrial Technology: 4 (the only tech where I managed to match wie201)
Spying and Intelligence: 3
So either:
1) There are differences in research gains between version 1.03 (that wie201 is using) and 1.08 (that I am using), or
2) wie201 got a lot luckier than me, or
3) wie201 invested more than 1 chit in some technologies (but he still would have been limited to the 2000 total limit so I don't think this is what he did), or
4) a combination of the above, or
5) His opponent did not invest in spying and technology at all (in my test I did have the Allies research this), or
6) Something else happened that I can't think of.
I'm hoping wie201m will let us know which is correct.

I will have to go back over my saves to try to reconstruct what I did. I have no idea whether Mark invested in Spying and Technology at all. Off the top of my head I did invest heavily in Tech from the very beginning, and had a number of Research Breakthroughs, but since I don't know how many I should have gotten, I can't say for sure if I was average or WAY over average. I am off today (Labor Day - USA), and Mark's coming by later (now fully retired) so I'll ask him a few questions as I don't think it matters much now. Although delayed, the SEALION invasion must take place.

Also remember that this was my first try as Axis and I purposely decided at the outset to limit the field of battle. For example, I didn't even try to get Finland on my side. I calculated that if I was technically superior, a smaller front line would be to my advantage, and I wouldn't have to repair units from too many other countries.
And I got VERY lucky with Yugoslavia, as they went Allied just before I had to place mechanized reinforcements, allowing me to place them right at the Yugoslavian border, and ending that conflict in fairly short order.
U-Boats were deployed in full force later than usual, until technically superior, allowing them to survive and avoid combat, again saving MPPs. And, frankly, in Version 1.03, the Italian Army really defeated the Allies in North Africa - the German Afrika Korps was reduced primarily to clean-up operations. Not that Italy could have taken the entire Mid-East, but they caused (and took) a lot of casualties saving German forces. Finally France was defeated quickly, allowing the German Army to walk to the Russian border - no operational costs there.
The idea was to aggressively save every MPP I could at the outset. No excessive costs EXCEPT for the armoured forces that invaded France and Benelux in 1940.
No excess casualties - destroy every small, weak unit you can and leave the big forces until later, if at all (France surrendered with a very substantial Army, a good portion of which was never engaged.)
Also the Allied forces were not particularly aggressive. Mark allowed me to run the war "on the cheap." No Greece and the worst timing possible on Yugoslavia. Then an abortive invasion of Norway which cost him an Army and a Special Forces corps.
As you can see, the overall theme was for the Axis to pinch pennies, invest on a smaller, technically savvy Army (until a larger one could be built), refuse direct fights with strong forces unless necessary, all this coupled with some bad luck and (as Mark would agree - remember his first time as Allies) some bad decisions or, at a minimum, badly timed decisions.
And maybe an excess of research breakthroughs for me.
The result, I think (hope) was (is) a perfect storm for the Axis. We'll see soon. The Invasion starts tonight!

wie201, thanks for the response. I believe there must be some changes between version 1.03 and version 1.08 as well. I never played with 1.03 but in your post dated September 1, 1939 (Turn 1) you said you built a tank. That would not be possible with 1.08 as Germany only starts the game with 50 MMPs. Does anyone know where one could find the readme file or whatever that lists all the changes with each version of the game?

Hi all!
It will take a few days before I can wrap this up. I have baaaaad back, and on top of that I took a little spill, but I will get back to posting after the weekend.
Sorry for the delay! My own clumsy (oversized) feet
But I want to take the time to explain/demonstrate the vicious air/land/sea fight for mainland England. It was a doozy!
