In the DEI, Miri and Tarakan are taken intact.
In Northern China, 1st Army begins wrecking the blocking force of five Chinese Corps and all the Chinese reserve artillery while 11th Army continues to reduce the Chinese strongpoint at Tsiaotso. Both operations look to take 1-2 weeks.
At Port Moresby, the first IJA attack does well, achieving 2:1 with the least experienced forces. Constant air and naval bombardment have disrupted the Australian troops. The veteran divisions will now swap out as the last few moves occur to ensure there is no retreat path. 16th Army confidently reports they will take the base before the end of the month.

Armor units in northern China are recovering from a couple days of attacks. Their normal cycle is two days of attacks then 2-3 recovering damaged tanks. Actual losses have been almost zero in these units over the past couple months of combat and their experience is in the mid 70s. It will take at another couple of weeks to weaken his eight corps in combat enough to commit my infantry divisions to the attacks.

I have committed eight newly raised 4th Fleet Nav Guard units to southern China to bolster my operations to take the Nanning - Kweilin sector and give them combat experience. Even with these units, I am still outnumbered in these sector, but can still conduct effective offensive operations as long as I stay massed. DW has the advantage of internal lines of communication and can redeploy his large reserves from Changsha. His preferred tactic is to jump on an exposed recon battalion or lead brigade, though he has enough troops to wreck a division be itself. Further south, DW is sending his badly weakened corps on suicide missions against Canton and Hangchow, to get me to destroy them. I rotate inexperienced units taking turns attacking these units to get them combat experience while not generating enough AV to destroy them. The only downside is at Hangchow, his units are keeping a 100 resources from producing until they are forced to retreat.

At Port Moresby, my rotation of units for another round of attacks will be complete in four days. Heavy naval bombardments will occur on the same day, while air attacks continue in the meantime, daily. I have barges ready at Milne Bay to resupply the ground troops, supplementing the Kokoda Trail and aerial resupply, but I am not risking unloading anything across the beach while my units are moving. I don't know if supplies will trigger an artillery engagement like troops do, but I don't want to risk it. His guns are still a good bit more effective than mine in the hex at the moment. My long guns, crawling through the dense jungle pass, will probably arrive just about the time PM falls...

Enemy ops losses of patrol aircraft have been very heavy over the last four days--3 per day. If you have played DW, you will know that is very, very high for him, even for his entire air force, let alone a single airframe. I assume he is flying troops or supplies in somewhere, rather than just losses due to NAVSEARCH, but I have not been able to determine where. Zeros on LRCAP over Port Moresby--the most likely target for him to be withdrawing, reinforcing, or resupplying--have not found any transports at any altitude (I have tried 6,000, which should catch any down to 1,000). It does not appear possible for him to be conducting these operations at night, since neither TROOP TRANSPORT nor SUPPLY TRANSPORT are options for night ops. This is a puzzle. I am going through all my recon units and reassigning them targets (or commander's discretion) to see if I can find what is going on.

One thought just occurred to me. He may be using amphibian patrol aircraft to fly troops out of Bataan to southern China. They are not going out of Clark, where I have LRCAP. Does anyone know off the top of their heads which Allied patrol aircraft are amphibians?

I checked, and the recent enemy ops losses of PBYs/Catalinas are all in the non-amphib types. He is flying coastal hex to coastal hex.

Turned out to be FOW. I did not lose a single tank or truck in the attack from any armor regiment (or any of the other units that watched the tanks go into battle). Not only that, I have very few disabled tanks, about six total across all the regiments. A good reminder that the combat report is a single document produced for both players and is replete with inaccuracies.

Apparently, unloading supplies over the beach at an enemy base to not trigger automatic bombardments like troops do.

The IJN suffers a significant and humiliating defeat while the IJA racks up a surprisingly easy victory in China and is on the verge of overrunning the Australians and Americans at Port Moresby.

The major units of the 4th Fleet, BATDIV 3 (Yamashiro and Fuso), CRUDIV 3 (Tone, Chikuma, Chokai, and Haguro), and CRUDIV 4 (Aobe, Furutaka, Kako and Kinugasa), with their DD divisions as escorts, were preparing to bombard Port Moresby in support of the Army's major offensive. They had done so a week before with significant success; however, recon aircraft sighted a suspicious build-up of Allied shipping at Cairns, what appeared to be ten cruisers in multiple taskforces. It seemed likely the enemy would try to make a high speed run from Cairns timed to catch the bombardment taskforces low on ammo. The fleet was ordered to patrol off Port Moresby instead, and torpedo bombers were loaded with their deadly fish while Zeros prepared to sweep the skies. The IJA had 2 BBs, 8 CAs, and 12 DDs. The enemy strength was estimated at ten CA/CLs and 10 DDs, and they would be without aircover.

The IJA would outgun the enemy and cripples would be easy prey for the fliers. Or so it seemed.

After action review from the Battle of the Coral Sea:
I don't like doing it, but I am going to have to cherry-pick all surface TF commanders. I say I don't like doing it, because flying Tanaka all over the map seems gamey, and if a TF commander has a Naval Skill in the upper 60s, I am normally fine. I will pay this more attention and see if there are significantly better options.

DW uses cruiser squadrons instead of divisions, and sends them in a swarm. He has done this in both the action of Palembang and now off Port Moresby. I had assumed this to be generally a disadvantage, since his TFs are typically outgunned 2:1 or more in an engagement, which is normally a decisive difference in naval combat. However, the successive waves of fresh squadrons can be really effective within the game engine. It wasn't in the Palembang engagement since some of them never found my TFs, but in this case it turned the tables on what was shaping up to be a IJN victory.

DW also uses the old chit-game tactic of soak-off units. He does this on the ground, in the air, and at sea. I can make use of a similar tactic later, by having low value ships lead the charge.

In retrospect, I may have picked the wrong deployment of two options I had. I knew with a high degree of confidence the route he would choose. I even had submarines along the route, but they missed the rapidly moving ships. I could, however, have moved the fleet to be in position for a night engagement off Cairns. I opted not to do so because he has US dive bombers in Australia and could have deployed them to Cairns, so when the sun came up, it would be the IJA without aircover. This was most probably an error in judgement as there was no sign he planned for me to jump his route.

After one or two (at the latest) engagements your ships end up without ammo, hence the outcome.

I've seen Yamato and Musashi using up all their main gun ammo vs a couple of xAK in a single battle, it's a problem the game has in naval battles and if one knows that, voila... doesn't feel all that brilliant to me

"I know this going to be your death, Jim, but they will fire all those nasty long lances at you and expend much of their ammo, so when John gets there with his modern cruisers, he will have a cake walk. We will make sure we cast some roses or something over the spot where you and your boys go down. You do like roses, right?"

I don't know how long ago already, propably nearly a decade, I had a PBEM where I faced single DD TFs that kept attacking me as the Japanese, followed by one big TF. Same tactic and it pretty much ruined the game which I remember ended when the Allied lost their carriers late 42. I don't remember the name of my opponent anymore though. [&:]

Amazingly enough these tactics aren't popping up more often but if they get popular it's going to be a pity.

I think it breaks the game's naval combat model which is sad, but you are right that it is a tactic that is available to both players, and I would certainly organize the IJN the same way you describe. I would not, however, have subdivided the scouting and cruiser task forces into independent squadrons with the same target and missions, though. That is odd.

That was sort of standard Japanese practice as I understand it. Their standard fleet battle plan was to use their torpedoes to whittle down the enemy fleet before their BBs engaged. They knew they had superlative torps that their potential enemies never suspected. They used them to good effect in the battle of the Java Sea, but it was misleading - trying to get torpedo hits at night at long range was much more difficult.

I don't see it being better if both sides would use it. Go ahead and start sending in single DD TFs with lower TF numbers and your real TF in the end when the enemy is out of ammo. There was also that tactic of creating a hundred single ship TFs to spam an area to totally screw the air engine, this is dated back to even WITP.

Not the way I would want to play this game but to each his own. That's why it's so hard to find an appropriate opponent, thinking the same about what goes and what not. Hard to have a hr on everything and in this case, I wouldn't even have thought about it anymore as it wasn't "common" lately.

In comparison to real life, well, in this case the small number of ships were sent in in broad daylight for a mid ocean intercept so that's hardly a good comparison to the real life naval battles around Guadalcanal. Have two big TFs and your enemy sends in four or five small TFs in daylight for a naval gunnery duell? Guess the outcome in reallife and then compare it to the outcome in the game.

Have two big TFs and your enemy sends in four or five small TFs in daylight for a naval gunnery duell? Guess the outcome in reallife and then compare it to the outcome in the game.

I am with Castor Troy on this one. If you don't organize and use your forces in the way the militaries actually did, you can find holes in a game engine designed to model these tactical formations. But as he notes, what would a house rule for this even look like? I think BBfanboy was on to something. Not more than three SAGs with the same target hex: a scouting force, a cruiser force, and the big boys.

AA with supply will always fire at aircraft, but I think the mode they are in affects their rate of fire and maybe accuracy. When fragmented airstrikes hit a hex that has moving AA in it the first strike seems to get off fairly easy but the subsequent strikes face more AA. Just my impression - no data to back it up.
