SEAC anticipated that that the JAAF might try to counterattack after the suprise 'big raid' on Mandalay so the B-25's were split up to minimize the chance of one big strike or shore bombardment to nab alot of bombers. the AA gunners preformed sterling work against the medium altitude attack. 4 bombers were seen to go down directly over the base. Intel estimates that a further 6 were written off on landing or crashed on the way back. The JAAF bomber pilots were discouraged by the increased level of flak that they are having to fly through. calls are going out for newer types with heavier protection.

A new attempt to bomb Rabaul in the daytime ended in failure with the loss of two bombers (1 to a Zero, a 2nd to AA) Morale in the BG was very low after having to fight in and out of enemy airspace chased the whole time by buzzing fighters and then being subjected to heavy flak. (the enemy has been busy building up their defenses!......the ease in which Lae was sudued lulled 5th AF into thinking Rabaul might be similarily weak)

Morale for the BG sat at 16 after two days worth of maximum effort.

-The arrival of a Ki-44 Sentai in Burma helped to contain the allied offensive. The Tojos shot down 7 enemy fighter withouth losses in A2A combat (unfortunately, 4 were destroyed in the ground and more 3 were op. losses but no pilots were lost). Coupled with the 10 planes shot down by the Oscars (the 51st FG was slaughtered again), and two B-25´s lost, the total losses of the enemy were 19 planes (vs 14 for Japan) in the Burma theatre. Intel estimates that the enemy will be unable to launch attacks against Mandalay for up to one week due to lack of fighter escorts. A sun was lost near Australia, as the crew became too confident on v1.795[:D]

51st FG admitted to having lost 11 mounts and 7 pilots during the latest raid on Mandalay. Due to a recent upgrade by the ex-AVG, (23rd FG) E-varient P40's are now in short supply so the 51st has been withdrawn from the theater temporarily. Akyab is a Pommie base anyway. Let them eat Cake....er..."Hurricanes" (too bad i can't use any Hurricane IIc's (unfort this game started before error corrected preventing upgrade to this more powerful Hurr)

-Well, we have a good reserve of 20 years old guys....as we expect to have allies suing for peace in the middle of 1943[:D], this won´t result in a significant demographic depletion for our country, we are also considering to recruit citizens from recently liberated countries from our greater co-prosperity sphere, to our armed forces...[:D] people from Indonesia are pretty happy we relieved them from Dutch opression.

-After having lost almost all P-40´s, the enemy attempted to resume attacks against Mandalay, using Hurricanes as escorts. Results were disastrous, as 30 Hurricanes were lost in exchange for 13 Oscars and 3 Tojos. The Tojo, in particular, is gaining a reputation of invencibility in the Pacific, with A2A losses close to 6-7:1 when compared with P-40´s and Hurricanes, however, the ground crews are complaning about the difficulties in keeping these planes ready for combat. This probably happens because the Tojo can survive to damage that would bring down a Ki-43, so, it´s common to see heavily damaged planes returning from combat and being repaired. Meanwhile, a Japanese surface TF bombarded Akyab, destroying 2 B-25´s in the ground.

well there may not be an actual monsoon season, but there sure are plenty of thunderstorms, shutting down the base i always want to use. [:D]

Just delaying the inevitable crushing of heads!

-Enemy forces suffered heavy losses in the operations at the Burma area. While a large attack against Mandalay had good results with small losses for the allies, Akyab was bombarded again by enemy ships and an attempt to attack the surface units in the following day resulted in a bloody interception by Zeroes and Oscars flying from Rangoon. On the other side, the "invincible" Ki-44 suffered their first serious defeat over Changsha, to the P-40E´s from the AVG. Eight Tojos reported going down in flames in a few minutes with no enemy losses, not to mention three Ki-21´s shot down by the fighters. These are worrying news, as the performance of Tojos is worsening in all fronts, even againt Hurricanes. The commander of the 11st Sentai again noticed that the Oscars were very important in the early successes of the Ki-44, as they were able to involve the enemy fighters in close combat allowing the Tojos to bounce them. He said it would be stupidity to send Tojos in offensive missions against enemy fighters withouth the company of Ki-43´s, as the similar flight characteristics of Ki-44´s and P-40´s would likely result in a stalemate or even in a total disaster against better trained pilots. The new Army instructions call for (1) the cancelation of all offensive missions of Ki-21´s over China and (2) a better coordination between the Ki-43 and Ki-44 formations

-The mod was highly successfull in slowing down the pace of air operations, now it takes a lot of time to lock down a base. Nik was able to close Lae, but it costed him about 70 planes and almost two monts, despite the fact I had only one Zero Daitai in the base and very weak flak, and Mandalay is fully operational despite had being bombed every day, by large formations for the last ten days. Losses were relatively large for both sides, but there were no massive losses in a single combat, instead, we have relatively low losses each day.

-The heavy losses suffered by IJAAF over Burma resulted in the commitment of one A6M2 Daitai to defend Mandalay, coupled with a poorly escorted attack against ships at anchor in Rangoon, the results were the worst defeat for the allied airforces since the beginning of Burma campaign. While the Japanese forces lost 11 planes (half of them in the ground), the enemy lost 41 aircraft including 6 of the "invincible" B-25´s, 4 of them in A2A combat. On the other hand, Japan lost a submarine near PM and had another CL damaged in Rangoon.

Yes i'd say it does. Mandalay is becoming increasingly hard to attack as flak and fighter defenses increase. Morale of my bomber units are taking a blow which will require rest or an easier target/mission to bring up. Only compensation is that few bombers have been brought down.

I don't dare attack Mandalay at 6000 feet....thats for sure. Would probably lose a dozen bombers.

However on the bright side, i've gained valuable inroads into Burma and my own airbases are strongly defended.

SEAC denied the allegations today that it had been thrashed soundly over Burma. Commonwealth forces claimed at least 36 enemy fighters destroyed in the air or on the ground. Churchill plans on personally visiting India and distributing VC's to worthy airmen who shoot down lots of Japanese aircraft!

(this is actually a real report....pulled from Shores Vol III in regards to the severe problems experienced by Hurricane pilots in India/Burma vs. the Ki-43)

I'm glad to hear this! Sounds like a distinct improvement. Nik, do you share Bombur's assessment about the effectiveness of Nik mod 5.0?

Yes. Its pretty much doing what i wanted it to do. Overall the scenario has a good "feel" to it so far. We traded two carrier battles....winning one apiece (but his victory was more spectacular due to a freaky "Midwayish" type incident.....i love it!)

Burma is a stalemate in the air though i've made great advances on the ground which were uncontested and i think Bombur will come to regret later in the game. (though right now its a consolidation period for the Commonwealth)

Our style of gameplay helps the feel too as it will in any stock or mod Witp game. You can "game" any system and as was said a long time ago....if you play "ahistorically....expect ahistorical results" Its harder in this mod to do it though....particularily in regards to the 24/7 base blitz @ 6000 feet. (if the base is heavily defended) but not impossible (I dislike the overeffectiveness of biga$$ fighter sweeps for example)

Rabaul is too strongly defended for me to blitz right now without escorts during the day. I don't lose alot of B-17's but they come back battered and low on morale. (as mentioned before...there's a reason now to do a night attack....to avoid fighter defenses and some of the flak)

longer range fighters and a step by step advance (i.e. realistic tactics) are thus advised...more so given the fact that i know his airpower is anything but broken. Right now my air dominates NG...but that doesn't mean i can get away with murder, nor that it cannot suddenly be contested
