Our subs got two PB.

Same in China. Recon shows some unit(s) at Kweiyang moving toward Tuyun.

There is loads of maintenance going on in all of the 4EB groups. We've finished upgrading British '41 infantry squads to '43 - yeah! Of course, we are still way short on those squads and will be for the duration. This is the consequence of DAW not slowing down in Burma early on when the Empire got a seriously bloody nose. Instead, the Imperials pursued the noble forces arrayed there and eventually severely punished some British units.

On Iwo Jima the two USMC Divs had a net reduction in disruption, but one actually increased! The fresh troops will land tomorrow will troops ashore making a deliberate attack in support. All bombardment groups on station, which is most of them, will bombard in support.

Watampone has built to size 9 airfield. Although tomorrow is predicted clear weather over Palembang our recon has faltered due to flying machine maintenance. We should get good pictures tomorrow. I am toying with the idea of hitting the airfield at Palembang first. There are no decent airfields close enough to matter much, so if the attack was successful then aerial opposition would be knocked out.

The KB is leaving the Java Sea. Meanwhile, Kalao is being resupplied.

The attack at Iwo Jima would have gone much better than I anticipated, but a nuclear level counter-battery action to the Japanese auto-bombardment vaulted the subsequent Allied attack into "spectacular". As mentioned in the prior turn's post(s), the Allied units already on the island made a deliberate attack while the two landing divisions of course were forced to shock attack.

71st Field AA Battalion Wiped Out at Iwo-jima by attrition!!!
I'm not sure which unit was destroyed during the combat, but recon shows 5 units with more than 24,000 troops there now. The two new ID are about 80% disrupted and the two USMC divs are around 50%. The two troop convoys are still unloading cargo - and might be for a bit, considering the 100% port damage - so an empty (amphib) cargo convoy will begin loading the 1st USMC Div at once to relieve crowding. Both USMC divs will be pulled off while the remaining forces clear the island. Engineers and base units are on their way from the vicinity of Agrihan. The artillery units are in good shape and all three will bombard. Mine sweepers are on the way. A PBM-3D group has landed and will begin patrolling close to the coast of Japan tomorrow; debris in the water damaged 3 planes. Two AVD are on the way to support them while engineers work on the shore facilities.

There are two CA bombardment TF in range and both will hit Chichi Jima tonight. See the full combat report - there were several appearances of Jack fighters over Iwo Jima today.

The attack at Rabaul went well, and the troops will rest before the next go.

The next attack at Manado is tomorrow. A good recon of Palembang is still in progress due to weather, but there are planes flying. The IJN carriers from the Java Sea are not seen or heard from. My presumption is that they have moved to the South China Sea to cause trouble for the advance into the Sulu Sea.

Man, that was a long, tough fight to get Iwo Jima - and it isn't over yet either. Congratulations on your victory! [&o]

I'm curious (but not yellow) - do you remember the max level of forts he had there before you reduced them to 5?

Will you be trying to corner KB?

Wait - I just realized also that Iwo Jima is not an atoll. It's a size 2 island, hence still the shock attacks required.

DAW HQ seems to have a staff infection - they left the guys at Iwo Jima on bombard. The counter-bombardment was as bad as the day before, then our own bombardment did a bit more. Still more than 16,000 Imperial troops there. Loading up of our troops is painfully slow with the port blasted into the water as it is. Only one of the USMC divisions has begun loading while the other waits for either of the two convoys that landed the USA divs to finish offloading supplies. Once again a couple or three enemy fighters showed up over Iwo Jima during the day. More bombardments of Chichi Jima are ordered to hit the gaggle of Imperial fighters there. Back at Iwo Jima, I've decided to add an armor-only attack to the artillery units' bombardment. The two USA divisions are still recovering, but let's see if keeping up the pressure with the armor hastens the securing of the island.

It looks like the garrison at Saumlaki is finally wiped out; a little more recon to be sure. Next attack at Rabaul is tomorrow. The naval bombardments there have been taking a frightful toll, with pressure kept up during the day by the bomber groups. Imperial troop count at Rabaul is down to a little over 8,000. The attack at Manado made significant progress. Disruption of our troops is up a little bit, but they will continue attacking tomorrow to take advantage of what must be elevated disruption among the defenders.

The weather finally looks cooperative; the B-29 groups are ordered to hit Palembang tomorrow. Target: airfield! Altitude ordered is 12,000 ft, and recon has counted 78 guns on the ground. All groups will hit the airfield with the objective of knocking it out in one blow. Subsequent raids will have a small number of groups hit the airfield to keep it down while most hit the oil. Praboemoelih, 1 hex away, has only a size 2 airfield and may be hit by small groups if it seems that fighter coverage has gone there.

An interesting note, Ternate is now sporting 9 auxiliary type aircraft, either naval search or perhaps transport planes pulling troops there from Sorong and Sansapor. We'll arrange some naval bombardments. The first will be 4x DD tonight.

Many CL with the fleet around the Marianas and Bonins are due for April '44 upgrades and are heading back to Pearl Harbor.

The B-29 raids on Palembang went well enough, but 4 were lost overall (only one in the combat report). The airfield shows at 27% damaged. That will probably increase with tomorrow's recon, but overall I think the experiment showed that it's not worth it, unless in support of some other operation.

Here is Iwo Jima.

A YMS on mine sweeping duty hit a mine at Iwo Jima - doh! At least it appears that the last of the mines are gone. The base is completely repaired and construction work has begun on expanding the airfield. P-47 sweeps against Chichi Jima will commence tomorrow, as will bombing by B-24 groups out of Agrihan. Again this attack was with only the armor unit and dedicated artillery units in support. ~800 fewer troops were found by recon, so attrition is doing its thing.

A two-CA bombardment TF was mistakenly given orders to remain on station after bombarding Chichi Jima and had to fend off small Betty attacks. Luck was with us!

The attack at Rabaul went very well and the next attack will likely capture the base. The troops will rest at least a day.

The troops at Manado could use just a little more rest but will attack tomorrow.

After tonight's bombardments of Pagan, both Oklahoma and Tennessee will steam to Pearl Harbor for repairs. The former needs a new air search radar, and the latter has an entire bank of 40mm our of commission. There is no sign of the Imperial carriers. My best guess is that with the capture of Iwo Jima they have deployed to a ready zone to await an Allied thrust that will trigger their use. That could be anywhere from the Okinawa area to the southern Philippines. We are sortieing a large number of subs to the South China Sea and the Sea of Japan (unrelated efforts). The B-29s at Watampone are 53 ready out of 105. At least they are taking the down time for maintenance! Oil at Miri is the next target, but today's recon - the first - was stymied by weather.

Here is the overview map.

The P-47D25 sweep over Chichi Jima netted about 13 (perhaps x2??) enemy for 1 ops loss. I'm sure the nightly bombardments helped to reduce the defenders' performance in the air the next day. Tomorrow we commence recon of Naha, Tokyo, and Yokohama/Yokosuka.

More attrition at Manado, meaning more progress. Our troops will rest for at least 2 days.

Bombardments - last night by a 3-CA TF - and bombing of Ternate have reduced the number of auxiliary type aircraft seen there to 4 (from 6). Possibly some of those are damaged and certainly any engineers at the base are operating below 100% efficiency. Destroyers will continue to bombard to complement the air strikes, but the cruisers will get ready to aid the next attack at Manado.

Another day of rest at Rabaul would be nice, but I think there the issue will be forced tomorrow. Engineer units from Watampone have arrived at Makassar so that base should finally finish repairing and start building. Only a few more B-29 have come ready. Recon of Miri is now 5/6; about a dozen and a half fighters are present, plus about 15 bombers.

Two well led and competently crewed ships in a smartly commanded TF consisting of only 4 ships managed to collide with each other. They will keep each other company on the way to Pearl.

The troops at Manado could attack tomorrow, but will wait for the CA TF to get close enough to make a run in, probably just a one day delay but maybe two with rearming that took place today. The B-29s continue to come on line at a trickle. Recon of Miri was hampered by weather today, but tomorrow is forecast to be clear. Makassar is almost fully repaired.

Here is Rabaul. Two divisions from Iwo Jima are on their way here to R&R.

Nice to take a level 9 airfield out of his hands, even if damaged! [&o]

Right! I'm really pleased that I was able to shut it down and bypass it, then eventually take it with a lone Bde. The stacking limit there will come in handy just about now. Once the port is repaired and built out I might even move the fleet advance base force from Kavieng.
