[UPDATED DB v440]

"The MDC said at the time that the new BAE Systems Sampson radar fitted to the Type 45s would be used in detecting and tracking ballistic targets during the MDA tests.
The radar is part of the Sea Viper anti-air missile system, which includes the MBDA-developed Aster 30 weapon.
Successful satellite tracking experiments involving Sampson have already been conducted."
Considering that this testing took place without the ships having new hardware added I think its safe to assume that the capability is added through software. The Thales website seems to back this up "Additional capabilities can be introduced during lifetime according to customer needs. This makes the radar future proof in case of evolving requirements."

The T45 in game is completely blind to even short range ballistic missiles such as SCUD when placed within a few miles of both the launch site and target - this seems rather unrealistic regardless of whether S1850M has its ballistic missile box checked or not. I was also surprised that at 1.2nm from the launch area I didn't even get a contrail sighting.
