I wonder if those people complaining about the US torp dud rate would still think it was high if they tried Silent War... Halfway through the second turn of the war and after almost 30 attacks I've sunk 2 ships for a grand total of 3000t [:(] Damn torps have already robbed me of about 20k of tonnage so far [:@]

Have a potential GFU coming over for dinner. Gonna make a big shepherd's pie: lamb, the whole magilla. Any aussies out there that have a take on what I can serve with this? So far, I'm stuck with tomatoes with crumbled gorgonzola, balsamic vinegar and some olive oil. Works, but totally boring. Hep me, hep me, please.

Dunno about Aussies, but my Quebecois mother made shepherd's pie regularly. There's mashed potato and creamed corn layers in there too. Onions plus or minus to taste.

Shepherd's pie doesn't need a lot of sides. That's the point of a meal in one pot idea. But......the tomatoes will make a nice appetizer and you could do some fresh berries and ice cream for dessert.

Echo that. A nice tomato salad and suitable wine will go fine with the pie...

M'kay, I'll go with you and the brush head. A nice Pinot and some berries and ice cream. Damn, been almost 20 years since I had to play this game.
Thanks. John

creamed spinach, sauteed asparagus or seared brussel sprouts with real bacon bits
the tomato salad is a good idea...slice of tomato, slice of mozzorella cheese, sprig of basil - light olive oil and basalmic vinegar on top

A good Kiwi Shepherds Pie tort to me by my Grandmother;
The meat is normally leftover from a leg of lamb, or mutton. It is then minced in and old grinder (my Grandmother), or new blender(Me).
You peel and chop up one large onion, and Slice up some carrots. You fry off the onions and carrots unit they go soft. Then mix in the meat, and lightly brown the lot.
Then mix in some beef stock, and black pepper with water. Boil the lot slowly for about an hour, then put the stew into a pie dish.
Top-off with a layer of mash-potatoes, and bake in the oven for as long as you like.
I still make it sometimes, but mainly leave it to Mrs Divepac who makes a cracker Shepherds Pie. [&o]

Yeah, I'm doing the mozzarella thing on the tomatoes, forgot the fresh basil, can't get it here, using parsley. Like it that everybody likes the tomatoes; the local stuff ain't carolina beefsteaks, but are still pretty tasty. Did find find some Gorgonzola to go on top. Feel a lot like a stranger in a strange land.
Thanks ya'll. Ciao. John
[ed] oh yeah, cup of finely chopped asparagus in the pie. So there's onions, carrots, celery, brocolli, asparagus, peas, layered with shredded emmentaler, and the lamb thing. Rough-mashed red potatoes on the tippy top.

Yep, it's just like your grand ma's. Has a bit of Cali veggies added in it, but think ya'll would like it anyway. Smells like lamb. Hope she likes it.

Yeah , but Quebecois also put pork in just about everything too. I've seen it with lamb, beef, pork and a combination of all. I think the creamed corn is a Quebec?New England thing.

We do creamed corn quite nicely here in the south too. [;)]
And your plan sounds fine JWE. Like the suggestion of a good Pinot Noir. Excellent choice.
Basil is easy to grow year round with a small grow light somewhere indoors. Well worth the effort. Not a huge fan of parsley and tomatoes, at least in an appetizer context. You should be able to get cilantro. Try that if you can.
