I blame it on Englishness, not drunkeness.
The most alarming thing (other that the guy with that flourescent green thong) was that they have a women's class. [X(]

Blimey! Fulham have beaten Juventus in the Europa League despite trailing after the first leg [X(] In a possible bright spot for the American Threadsters it was American who scored the winning goal.
Dixie-you're very kind for throwing us a soft ball pitch to hit (alerting us to the American's winning goal).
What sport are we talking about? I've heard of Europa ("Festung Europa"), but nothing else in that sentence makes any sense. [;)]

The Jews have long memories. And yes, they were treated maybe even worse by the Soviets.
And then the Germans came. Tough draw for those poor folks. Little wonder there was a mass exodus throughout the 20th century.
Quite the contrary. My father's family came from very poor farmers in northwestern Ukraine. Quite a few of them rose pretty high in the hierarchy in soviet times. My mothers family came from artisans (tailors, shoemakers, etc) in southeastern Belarus. As I understand, while the Soviets did curtail their ability to openly make a profit, they were still able to do it (if not openly), and from what I understand, to them any loss in profits was made up for by the change in social status. So my family really had no bones to pick with the Reds. Probably the most discontented out of the bunch was my grandmother's older sister. She was a very active member of the Bund party (Jewish Bolsheviks, for lack of a better reference) which was amalgamated into the KPB /RF in the early 20s. She grew disillusioned and moved to Israel. But that was not until the mid 50s.
I've heard various people talk about antisemitism in the USSR. And it's certainly true to a good extent, especially starting in the late 50s-early 60s. But please keep in mind how large a percentage of the original Communists were Jews. Its when that bunch began to die off/retire other groups moved into the top ranks that antisemitism started. My father has always maintained that all the stuff about needing party membership to be promoted is garbage. He says that to be promoted beyond your level of competence you needed to be a party member and friends in high places. But to reach that level, simple merit was enough.
Interesting. So...um are you saying that Stalin's pogroms didn't happen?

I always find Onime's perspectives on these things fascinating. Might not agree, but I do like hearing his reasoning.

Not quite sure what youre referring to. If you mean the Anti-Fascist Committee then no, that had nothing to do with race. It was a political issue, much like the Trotskyite cleansing and the purdes of '37 -etc. Incidentally, more Jews were killed in the latter two than the former.

Thats what scholarship is. Thread knows you dont have to agree, but allowing me to state my case and giving my arguments full weight and consideration is what a proper gentle-Martian has to do to earn my respect. [&o][:D]

Certainly I must since you have a vested interest in the subject....far more than I do (though I should have more as a Christian). But I'm still curious, because my reading (limited though it is) on the pogroms was that they were very detrimental to the eastern European Jews. Perhaps this was more directed at the Hasidim than the more secular types? Curious as to your views on that.
I do agree that many Jews were Bolsheviks. Not sure that translated so much into many Jews being Soviets. I see a transformation in the 20s and 30s from the Marxism of the revolution into the Soviet structure that was not as accepting of your people.

It's the grand sport of Association Football old boy. Some developing nations, unable to fully grasp the concept of the game refer to it as soccer. [:'(]
The Europa League is one of the two multi-national tournaments that is played over here by club teams, until recently it was the UEFA Cup but the powers that be decided to change things around a bit. Fulham beating Juventus is quite a big thing, Juve are one of Europes bigger clubs historically and Fulham are, well not. It's good for me as well, Dempsey was in my fantasy league team until he crocked his knee and now he's fit again he'll be going right back in again.
