I decided to spring for the Avast Internet Security package. All functions with a 2-year licence for $60. Runs like a charm on my new computer, and has made my mother's computer (licence allows installs on three different computers) run much faster than before.
If you want an almost sure-fire way to make your computer run slowly, use different programs for the different security tasks.
How is their free suite?
Not sure there is one. There's an anti-virus program, but no full suite.
Yes. You are correct. So it looks like Avira is a good option, as it does have real-time browser protection.

Now if I could just get the speakers on the laptop to function. You get output through headphones but not the speakers. I'm thinking hardware. [:@]

Check the sound control panel. Sometimes your sound card shows up as multiple devices and picking the wrong one will mean no sound.

Hi Onime, had the same problem once, finally worked-out after a couple of years that I needed to turn my headset volume up in the Audio manager.
