Per the suggestions of Cribbit and Justus, I did some hunting and pecking about the PT boat issue. This is what I learned:

1. One big USN supply TF in theater does not give me the option to purchase PT boats, for some reason.
2. Ramree Island is American (it was taken by Marine raiders back around June 4). It only has 15k supply. Not option to purchase PT boats.
3. I can transfer control of Akyab to the Americans for 100 PP (a pittance!). Doing so activates the option to buy PT boats. I can buy roughly 15 or 20.

I like the idea. Anybody think its unkosher? I don't think so, but I have an hour or two to consider opinions of others.

Yes and no. Might be a little unkosher to buy the base out at the last minute just to throw up some PT boats. However, over the long term changing a base in India to US control so that you can buy both the useful PTs and small landing craft is entirely kosher in my book. Allies did not send these craft to this theater due to priority given to other theaters. You are giving priority to the theater and should be able to allocate all allied resources there if you choose. So barring a HR go ahead. I just don't think I would by the base the turn before a major action to throw up a force of PTs. That may not sit well. It would bother me a bit. But it really depends on the spirit of play that you and John are following. Would he do the same?

Opps! I see you have crossed the Rubicon on the PT issue so my opinion can be discarded. Also, I don't think you need to change the air HQ at all. Air HQ gives benefits no matter the parent HQ. I don't think changing that will have any greater impact. Will someone confirm this for me?

I've begun issuing orders consistent with the Allied fleet staying at Akyab. This time I have a queezy feeling, so I think my "spirit is unsettled." I'll make the final decision within the hour.

Also, something just doesn't feel right about John's assertions that his ships have refused to come in. The two-day failure, the lack of air strikes, his vociferous complaining, etc. It's almost too much - or too little and inconsistent in regards to his airforce - to be credible. The only other thing I can think of is that he was hoping to scare me out of port, either to get a crack at Akyab or to send my ships into the maws of a carrier force (though my patrols don't report anything in the Bay at the moment).

I'm so confused! Darn game has too many variables to fully process.

Even if I have to find out the hard way, it's more fun to go through the process. If not then we'd all be playing the AI.

I don't mind the occasional revelation by John. They can be useful, but sometimes they could be disinformation too. I think this particular instances falls into the useful category, but it's not decisive IMO.

Yes, you're right-I gave you 2:1 odds. There's $10 in it for me, $20 for you. But you're unlikely to see that cashola, obvert, as John will be demoralized and drop the game prior to January 1, 1944. [:'(]

P.S. I expect John to run this turn sometime in the next couple of hours.

P.P.S. The Rebel famliy will be on vacation for a week starting tomorrow. I have no means to play the game while away, so I of necessity "go dark" for a week. Here's hoping John becomes uncertain about the Allied plans for New Guinea. I've just about decided to proceed with the invasion no matter what. It's incumbent that the Allies open a second front. Estimated date of invasion: 14 days.

I wonder if John might be having the same trouble I had? Perhaps his BBs are on a bombardment mission targeting the Allied troops in the coastal hex between Akyab and Ramree. That would be funny. It would be funnier because the only Allied unit in that hex is a base force.

I've completed all orders for the next turn except Akyab. My inclination is to bug out, but with the enemy TFs just two hexes away, I'm not even sure I could leave without a clash. Decisions, decisions.

I have had SCTFs with good commanders refuse to go into an enemy port with known mines. Putting a DMS or two in the TF cleared that up.

I would agree with the consensus that changing the base to US control is kosher with that many US troops in theater. Good luck and enjoy your vacation!

Wow, I just went through a strange experience. (I only have time for a brief post as I have an errand to run for 1.5 hours. Much more later). I watched an excruciatingly long replay with countless ship combat rounds....in which the Allies came out ahead, but not to the point of demanding unconditional surrender. Then, I opened the turn file, which seemed to indicate something entirely and dramtically different. The combat report embedded in this replay seems to confirm that the Allies won a resounding victory. As best I can tell Japan suffered the loss or heavy damage to three or perhaps four BBs while the Allies lost one CA (amongs other lesser damages). More later, but I think the Second Battle of Assam was a decisive Allied victory. I think.

Look I understand that we all need vacations, but with GreyJoy going away too this weekend the peanut gallery is not amused. Could you too coordinate a bit better next time?[:D][:D]

desyncing definitely happens at the worst possible moments, so I think you have to go by what you actually see in game more so than the replay or the combat report if they are at distinct odds. That or rely on the MAGIC of email to get that extra intel.

What John is doing isn't "psyops." CR isn't asking leading questions or encouraging him. What John is doing is what is known in the South as "running off at the mouth."

Psyops doesn't have to be intentionally engaged in by both sides for one side to win. CR is simply not engaging in the 'trash-talk' he wants and it's seemingly getting to him judging by these over-revelaing responses. Simple denial is a great tool. I learned that from multiple girlfriends along the way.[:D]

I think that this talk of psyops etc is interesting but we shouldn't ever forget that:

a) John3rd isn't engaging in Psyops.
b) He isn't even TRYING to engage in Psyops.

What he is doing is fulfilling his narcissistic need to gabble about things. There's no plan, no deeper hidden meaning, no long-term planning. He is simply incapable of not gabbling and crowing about his "victories" and decrying the times that the game engine "fails" him ( as opposed to him making an error ) even though his opponent has clearly asked him not to engage in this sort of behaviour. The man has no self-control when it comes to fulfilling his narcissistic needs and this is causing him to break operational security, rules he has agreed with his opponent etc. It isn't pretty.


For my part I'm perfectly happy to not discuss the game via email if my opponent prefers not to. Psyops doesn't win the game by itself but it can be an extremely important component of a fully realised, coherent plan which addresses all possible aspects of the gaining of advantage. With that said if your opponent doesn't want you to engage in email discussion then it is, in my opinion, extremely rude and disrespectful to disregard their wishes.

One other thing I'd point out is that there's far, far more to psyops than what you write in an email. The idea that you can't engage in psyops if you can't engage in email discussions is erroneous. There's lots of psyops within the game even without any external chat and, indeed, there's a lot of psyops possible outside of the game even without any external chat. The most effective psyops, of course, is whatever the other person doesn't even realise is psyops --- and most people know that any chat about the game itself is quite likely to be laden with mistruths, half-truths and outright lies .

Of course all of the above is, to many players, just all part of the fun and the mental jousting... but if you are playing someone who feels psyops is playing in bad faith then you shouldn't engage in it or --- more accurately --- you should screen your opponents better and just not play people who don't like to engage in the psyops banter stuff.

Bottom line though John isn't engaging in psyops, he's just gabbling to fulfill his emotional needs and doing significant harm to his cause.
