Japanese LBA bombing strikes against Groote Eylandt and Wesel Is continue. Some Jap raids on Wessel Island intercepted by US LRCAP fighters dispatched from Horn Is. Range from Horn Island and number of available US fighter planes limits CAP activity over Groote Eylandt and Wesel Island – objective of LRCAP fighters to take down unescorted Jap bombers rather than engage fighter sweeps. AAR’s follow.

DEI: BB Fuso located at Balikpapan by 11/01 Sigint entry. My estimate based on recent Jap naval activity plus occasional game turn report entries has location and basing of heavy Japanese surface naval forces and the KB at Singapore or main bases in the DEI area. A shortage of information on Jap naval ship locations plus the range of possible base location(s) for KB and Jap heavy surface naval forces in the DEI area and/or Singapore has created considerable difficulty in accurately targeting or attacking them in port with any degree of surprise.
Burma: Detected status of Jap base in Rangoon – 83 aircraft (59 fighters, 24 bombers), no Jap TF, manpower 4(0), resources 21(0), refinery 72(129), light industry 9(32), 14 Jap LCU.
Detected status of Jap base in Magwe – 226 aircraft (205 fighters, 11 bombers), oil production 202(99), refinery 96(5), 26 Jap LCU.

Transport and naval TF for a planned amphibious landing at Abemama (Gilbert Islands) has been diverted to Christmas Is – these TF departing from Pearl Harbor. I observed that movement of these TF had been unusually slow, on further checking moderate to high disruption levels were found in most LCU of the landing force (probably due to excessive time at sea). Current location of Abemama invasion force TF is near (NW of) Palmyra. Plans are to regroup the TF at Christmas Is then dispatch them southward for re-staging in the South Pacific theatre area. This situation clearly reflects the infeasibility of mounting amphibious invasion ops in the Central Pacific area directly from Pearl Harbor. As much as delaying this operation is less than desirable it is a lesser evil than possibly repeating the outcome of the 9/44 Nauru Is invasion.
NW Australia: No Japanese TF’s visible on game map in Darwin base hex. 11/02 Coastwatcher report entries follow.

Summary of Operations 11/03/44 (continued)
South Pacific: Landing force of US engineer LCU reaches dot hex base on Kirakira near (SE of) Lunga, landing ops to begin next game turn. Kirakira remained under Allied control throughout this campaign. Plans are to develop airfield and port facilities sufficient to support planned operations by Allied fighter aircraft and PT boats to engage/interdict Japanese activity at Lunga, also supporting further Allied amphibious operations intended to bypass Pillager’s Jap base complex at Lunga/Tulagi and enter the central Solomons area. Parts of the US Escort Carrier force plus LBA fighters from Luganville and Ndeni providing air cover to this operation.
A US light naval force of three TF’s (one surface combat, one bombardment, one fast minelaying) entered Lunga base hex. I did not anticipate Japanese transport or naval forces in significant numbers or (ship) size – intent of the surface raid to take on whatever it found. 11/03 game turn reports indicate a total of 9 Jap MTB/MGB sunk in the actions below. Shore bombardment resulted in light damage (reported) to Jap airfield and port facilities at Lunga, a minefield also layed in Lunga base hex. AAR’s follow.

Japanese LBA bombing strikes against Groote Eylandt and Wesel Is continue. Bombing raids on Groote Eylandt intercepted by “random” US LRCAP fighters operating from Horn Is airfield. Range, plane/pilot fatigue and number of available USAAF P-38 squadrons at Horn Is limit amount and frequency of LRCAP coverage. However, the occasional appearance of LRCAP has created attrition of Jap LBA bombers (main objective of this activity). AAR’s follow.

John (johnjohn) update
November 1, 1944
Allies invade the Philippines and quickly secure Davao, Dabjenedes, and Caycayen. (spelling) Their apparently is little to no defense or supply in Mindenao. Anticipate cleaning up by end of November. Aircraft at Manila are flying, but no where else within range of Allied air. No fuel, no supply, no troops. Astonishing.
Sorong fell first week of October and quickly built into front line base. Enemy attacked with one CV task force (all sunk by Mitscher's 14 Carriers). Two fleet carriers, Amagi and Soryu, both sunk. Yamato, Kirishima, and three cruisers attempted to break up the attack on Davao. All were sunk by Mitscher's carriers. Invasion proceeded uninterrupted. 8 divisions disembarked. No opposition of note.
Updates...
CBI--nothing new. Chinese winning battles against Japan, lines remain intact, 50 additional C-47s flying the hump. 100 B-29s training at Dacca, 100 B-29s training at Fresno. 40 b-29s Tinian.
DEI--a second CV group (composition unknown) intercepted and sank the task force transporting the 6th Aussie Div to Darwin well beyond DEI towards map edge. Existence of Task Force unknown. Every ship in force sunk. Carrier group again has disappeared, but believed to be based at Batavia. Transfer of 7th and 9th Aussie to Darwin cancelled.
PNG--for all intent and purposes secured, though not totally occupied. Same for SOPAC area.
CENPAC--Marianas build up for Iwo Jima and Okinawa underway.
Best news is first Squadron to upgrade to P-51Ds has done so. Many more to follow.
Lexington at Alameda, ETA 1 August 45 to return to duty. Essex is one month out at East Coast. Wasp II is enroute PH with 29 floatation damage. She was torpedoed off Guam. Sub sunk. The build out continues. Much more still yet to arrive.
It is beginning to look like the enemy concentrated all its supplies and troops in the Burmese campaign, which turned into an Allied rout. China is holding against all GO attacks. Burma is secure.
Their has been little troop or supplies in the PNG, and now the southern Philippines. This is not what was expected. As of now, the enemy is unable to stop the allied assault. We will see.
