The Battle of the Coral Sea, April 28, 1942

Posted: Wed Jun 27, 2012 11:22 pm
by FDRLincoln
I have not had time to keep the AAR up, being very busy with family and work, but this game is still active. We are now in late April, 1942. I have conquered all of the DEI except Timor (which I just invaded), all of Burma, cleaned out Bataan a month ago, and am now getting ready to invade Port Moresby. KB is intact and overall I am running slightly ahead of historical timetable.

Yesterday, I won a big victory in the Coral Sea. It appears I sank at least two carriers, damaged two others, caused significant damage to his carrier air force (almost 200 planes destroyed yesterday according to intelligence reports), without significant loss to myself. Essentially, I lured his carriers north into the Coral Sea and ambushed them with both KB and mini-KB.

Unfortunately my carriers are very low on fuel and ordinance and will withdraw towards Rabaul rather than pursue his cripples.

Glad to have you back!

A very interesting situation you post. The KB is in a clear hex and the USN are in Thunderstorms yet it is a IJ slaughter .. CAP only 13 Fighters? Had to be a mistake in configuring CAP?

Yeah, I haven't heard back from my opponent yet. . .I'm not sure what happened there...he had four CVs but there was very little CAP and his attack wasn't conducted with four CVs of assault strength.

The turn before the battle, KB was not detected but mini-KB (which I was using as bait) was. I don't know for sure how he had his task forces configured. It will be interesting to see his response.
