Gentlemen,

well... I gambled and lost.

KB was in position to move in and go after my Ocean Island invasion support immediately. What is worse is that it moved more to the east and less to the north (or started from a more eastern and less northern position than I had expeceted) and thus caught a retiring SCTF with 2 good US CLs and 2 destroyers on top of a bunch of small fry merchant shipping. A field day for KB.

I lost about 120 points worth of shipping and expect losing half of that on top of the losses accumulated so far tomorrow. The only positive aspect is that KB lost 32 A6M2 in the process to CAP from Tabiteua, but those fighters valiantly sacrificed themselves to protect the strike planes, which remained unharmed.

Conversely, enemy dodged successfully my attempt to achieve a surface intercept at Namlea and used the remaining ammo on his Mutsu SCTF to hit Luganville once more. No huge plane losses, but airstrip and planes are badly damaged.

I am curious, if you had the opportunity to make the same gamble again - would you ? That's the parameter I use to evaluate myself in circumstances such as you describe. Was it a reasonable gamble that experienced poor luck? Or just a bad decision in the first place?

1. Radars are both hard to understand and simple to decide on. In the database, the radars have parameters like range and "penetration" that might lead you to believe more is better. Some of the ranges in thousands of yards would mean detection into adjoining hexes, but Alfred stated that radar detection is only within its own hex. Higher range means somewhat higher probability of detection further out, but multiple radars are more significant than one really long-ranged one.
As for the penetration parameter, I don't recall that being discussed but I figure it is about being able to detect through heavy cloud or even rain.
As for the simple part, if the game offers you a radar upgrade, take it. It is based on historic improvements and the AI calculating detection will no doubt like the newer radar.

2. In my experience, subs ending their movement in the same hex as their victim, or sitting there when the victim comes, have a much better chance of detecting and attacking - at least twice as good.

3. Just open the editor and look at the stats for Japanese AA guns. As a rule of thumb I fly at 3K when the Japanese have only 7.7mm MGs, 4K if they have 13.2mm MGs, 6K to 8K for AA machine-cannons and about 15K if they have 75mm or larger AA guns. Some of their guns can reach higher than you can fly, or so high that if you go above that, your bombs will surely miss. At some point you must accept some risk to get some result.

I also take into consideration the weather over target (if I have a DL on it) so I will come in lower when in rainy or overcast conditions.

BTW, Alfred mentioned that the ceilings for AA weapons are "squishy", meaning there is a chance of a few shells going higher and some not reaching as high as the stated ceiling. Take it as an average max height.

And are there any opinions about possible differentiation between the two "good" options?

I am asking because I used to apply the "end movement" approach, but think that other players seem to be more successful in the sub war than I tend to be. Before you point at choosing appropriate commanders, that I do (as far as PPs are available and in a sequential process).
