I'm 52 and my first wargame was AH's Battle of the Bulge in the late 60's followed by a whole slew of AH boardgames. First computer wargame was Guadalcanal Campaign played on the Apple IIe (Motorola 6502 8mhz processor, 128K RAM and twin 143K floppy drives... computing at its finest!).

I just happened to live 3 blocks from SSI at the time and would run down there to pick up the latest release. Even became a playtester for them (6-Gun Shootout and Rings of Zelfin... both duds!) for a short time. They wouldn't let me playtest wargames so I quit playtesting. I think at one point I had every SSI wargame for the IIe.

Before I got a C64 I bought a computerized version of AH's Squad Leader on cassette tape but for the life of me I cannot remember the name of the computer or who made it. AH was king back then with their board games, didn't they put out a magazine as well? I seem to recall getting one from AH or from some company about strategy and tactics.

Whoa. Turning 35 I have not had this feeling since ages, being among the youngsters that is.

I started wargmes, in 1985 when we recieved our first computer a C64. Living behind the Iron Curtain it was fun to play Raid Over Moscow (although not a wargame) in front of my classmates, coming from commie families (sort of dragging a lion's moustache).
My fav at the time was Battles of Napoleon, then Storm Across Europe. Later when we bought our first PC in 1992 Carriers at War, War In Russia, Civilization and Panzer General ruled.

Since AH boardgames were next to impossible to get (we did not even know that such company exists) we played a lot with a hungarian wargame Called Struggle For Europe, which was a largely simplified offspring of AH's Third Reich.

Przem, do you know that you and I (25) are amongs the youngest users here? I think we are 5th/6th youngest :P We should talk to those guys using words like Sire.

BTW, game was named Ardennes '44, it was also my first war boardgame (first ever was a copy of Talisman) - and contrary to you I think it was balanced as hell - every time I played it result was draw or Germans winning by single point.

Well for me the system sucked as only attacker suffered losses and the defender could lose anything only if surrunded[:D] and the Rule "Germans win if any non-Arty unit crosses the Mouse" was rediculus[:D] Geee i know that we are ones of the youngest here[:D] Cheez i wounder if i will be still playing those games when i will be 40 or something[:D][:D]

Btw, to you old Gettysburg players: Don't you think attacking Heth's Division on both flanks with Gamble and Devin's Cav Brigades on the 1st turn to get 2-1 odds was just a mite gamey?

Nope![:D]

I jealous - I only had 64k on my apple. Came with 48k, had to buy a 16k card to get to 64k.

one of my all time favorites, despite my disapointment to find that while the game claimed to fight battles down to the specific tank, in reality it was platoon level combat (and even then abstracted via math)

Course the real game killer was the no stack rule.....the AI attacked the same way every time.....one small colored square leading your way like a UFO.....hence one fought squares most of the time, not the neat tank graphics.
