I think the "Dive" part refers to the posture one assumes after the rum.

SCUBA existed already, he invented the re-breather.

SCUBA (Aqualung) not invented until 1943 by Cousteau and Emile Gagnan. Rebreathers existed before this, but were pretty dangerous to use.

EDIT: Rebreather systems around from the 1600s (!!) Self contained ones for single divers since the 1800s, but they got going a bit more in the 1930s in Italy. The Italian navy used them, and the Brits captured some and modified them. The USN also had a rebreather in the early 1940s. Easy to die using rebreathers, though. They worked by reabsorbing carbon dioxide, but if something goes wrong, the user rapidly goes unconscious due to the toxic effects of CO2.

RE-EDIT: Some rebreathers were originally known as SCUBA, but the term eventually got usurped by the open circuit (Aqualung) design.

Sandy Shaw: We lost at least 3 fighters trying to defend Sandy Shaw and harrass Wyndham. Somebody needs to tell the USAAF and RAAF we are bugging out. We may need to provide cover for few more days to get the B-17's out. Some Jap DD's raided the harbour and sunk a PT boat but did no other damage. They may have hoped to catch some traffic coming in or out. Beauforts and Vildabeests attacked the retreating Jap DD's but didnt hit anything.

Susan: The B-26's flying from Katerhine are causing quite a bit of disorganization and damage to equipment coming up on Katherine. 24th Inf Regt took quite a pounding from the B-25's and fearsome Wirraways.

La Foa: Hundreds of sorties over La Foa today. First 40-50 plane zero sweeps then the Bettys came over. This is softening up for the next attack.

Norfolk Is.: B-17's hit the airfield at Norfolk which appears to be empty. they will switch to ground attack. This is a good opportunity to have the carriers creep up within fly-off range of La Foa and get the F4F's out. (does somebody know how many hexes away I can be and still get the F4F's out?) The two regiments planned for the Norfolk landing should push off from Suva today. A third regiment is still loading at Auckland. The BB bombardment force will converge from Oz and one BB from the east in about 3 d. Let's hope the boys at La Foa are still free men.
