Not necessarily. For example, in a patch (long ago) the code for the islands in the Indian Ocean that are beyond the LOD was added. the point being that more than one code can be recognized, if that's how they did it.

He says this might be the most important turn in game to date!!! it's the attack against the blocking force on the road to Bangkok. He gives himself a 20% chance of breaking through. Wow. That makes me nervous.

My units will face waves of bombers, probably 4-5 divisions or the equivalent, but he hasn't yet bombarded on the ground. Should be interesting. I'm hoping they hold for this day and allow the tanks to make it there. Also his supply will be sporadic after the first big attack.

Fingers crossed and nerves aplenty!

My point, and I'm probably out to lunch here, is the nation codes are used for lots of things in the EXE. How the EXE examines them: in an index, a series of nested IF:THEN statements, etc I don't know. And for the Allies I think they're primarily used to determine which set of Leaders to present to the player. But for the Japanese side there are also multiple codes, and I think they're used in part to determine how restriction on LCUs operates.

The Kuriles have different codes than the HI. EXCEPT for Para-Jima, which is an HI code. I don't think this is an accident. I think the scenario designers wanted Para-J to be an anchor base to defend the arc, and the other islands to require hard decisions on buy-outs.

I basically agree, although the details are unknown to me. Especially the part about LCU restrictions, that one would be news to me but I haven't messed around hardly at all in that area.

DEVASTATION!!!

[font="Microsoft Sans Serif"]BURMA: [/font] Gutted. He brought more than I thought was possible. The recon I've done has been useless and gave me no real idea of the strength here, and I didn't overstuff the hex as I should have, so the Allies have broken the retreat path. They control it now.

The interesting things here is there is a lot of +3 territory that I've got these forces next to here. I may try to just pile up in it and see what happens, crawling slowly toward Bangkok. His tanks will cross the hills soon and join in but all of this is very tenuous now. He can also flank through Raheng but that might give me enough time to move across and out. I have to plan for these troops being surrounded and destroyed. Jocke has played this well and I've made at least one crucial mistake in not adding another division or two into this hex. I've stopped the tanks and will hold as more stuff catches up. They are in a +3 terrain and about 20 arty units and HQs are on the way, a few days away. The 4300 AV of the main body is about 7-9 days away. He still has no decent supply path here, but might get some through the woods.

This wil be interesting. Not as planned, and just one day or two here or there changed everything. It's a game of inches!

Well, I've had my fun there, and really frustrated a massive Allied army several times. If dug in and in +3 terrain maybe I can do it again? Who knows. To play Japan is to be continually optimistic when there is no realistic reason to be! [;)]

I know, its just so far out, so easy for the allies to land behind you, so easy to get caught, so many units you need to delay them .... Argh ... I really hate Burma. I think the main reason I generally try to eliminate CHI is so that I can retreat via CHI if necessary. I mean once the allies have Rangoon in mid-43 the whole west DEI is exposed and no real way to keep the oil flowing. And once they have Darwin, pretty much the same for the EAST DEI ... so I usually bail pretty early. I'm sitting all the way back at Long San in the South and Kunming in the North, the PI, Formosa ... the rest of it ... Pfft. Just too risky for me. I want shorter lines and ones that I can reinforce quickly with little chance to get cut off ... Sorry. Venting.

This is the best all around airframe for the IJN units and will begin to fill out the KB as soon as possible. The first of these however go to the former Tainan Ku S-1 which is now the S-901 Hokutai. This is still an elite unit with pilots in the 70-80 exp range but only 18 planes. It is being used as a high level CAP for Bangkok, and the extra climb of the Sam could help get these guys above anything other than a P-47. (While it's filling out it'll remain at 20k).

The game is moving forward at 1-2 turns a day. I haven't had as much time to update lately but will try to catch up to the game in the next few days. In a nod to Francois (fcharton) the music for today is Bon Iver - Stems Project (remixes). The beverage is a latte.

[font="Microsoft Sans Serif"]SUBS: [/font] Allied subs get a few hits on smaller transports and we get a few hits on them.

[font="Microsoft Sans Serif"]DEI:[/font] Not much seems to be happening at Balikpapan. That's fine as it is a potentially huge base to take out the rest of the oil and industry of the DEI. I'm getting as much as I can from the mid-range defenses in the South, leaving a few roadblocks up front and getting a hodgepodge to have for another small speed bump. A few air nodes will be left intact and able to contest forward movements as he is not using CVs here, only LBA.

[font="Microsoft Sans Serif"]PI: [/font] All ships moved out and the extra strike planes and kamis I had ready to go from Manila and Clark didn't get a chance to hit anyone. The kamis from Cebu flew into a full CAP without escort and were annihilated without getting near any ships.

All troops from Antimonan, which are fragments from Babeldaob being flown back, will try to move out but may not make it in time depending on bombing and the aggressiveness of the Allied progress here. The Emilys are hard at work long distance from Manila getting a few more back. No sense leaving them if I can move them out. A few more small combat units, a few big base forces and some engineers.

The Allies finally take Davao which allows many of the flown out units to begin rebuilding and filling out.

[font="Microsoft Sans Serif"]CHINA/INDOCHINA: [/font] Jocke must be starting to notice that the Chinese mountain region is being vacated. Lots of troops moving down. It's a risk, but a sizable force will be left in Kweillin easily able to get to Tuyun before any Allied moves walking through Paoshan. I have a brigade still there, a brigade in Tuyun, a division in Kunming and a brigade still in Mengtze.

The China Ex. Army HQ will move into range of the coast now and several more divisions and arty units will form a large reserve to meet any invasion threats along the line from Pakhoi to Amoy. There's a lot of clear hexes here, but if he takes something in the area it'll be harder to support a 4E campaign here. I would expect a move on Hainan first if this is a goal. I have almost nothing there but some brigades allocated once they get to the area. The real defense of the area would be in the air and undersea. A swarm of subs is gathering again, and both Saigon and Cam Ran Bay are large air nodes. Haiphong and Samah will be soon as well.

[font="Microsoft Sans Serif"]BURMA: [/font] Troops are moving forward toward their uncertain future, but efficiently and in order. The Allies close the path by kicking out the last remaining AA unit. We have little supply on this road and it might be even less since the road link has now closed, but I'm hoping since the distances are fairly short that a supply route will still move between Bangkok and these troops. The 4Es bomb our biggest AA stack and lose almost 20 of their number. I like that. Keep it coming.

Against Bangkok CAP the Allies fly sweeps one hex distant over our retreating troops and get enormous results, about 5:1 on the day. This is all an experiment, so tomorrow I'll try LR CAP instead to get more numbers up immediately to the battle zone. Mostly Franks and Oscars at 31k with a few Frank 'r' higher at 35k and some bait Georges at 20k.

Mine were moving at 1 month ahead every 10 days in the end! The engine bonus of course is the key. Getting them in 11/44 is great, but yeah, if we could get them when they were intended originally, sometime in 43, that would be huge.

From what I understand the problem was the engine, so maybe if the engine was heavily researched early and about 6 x 30 R n D factories were immediately started on Dec. 8, it might be possible to get it into early 44. A big investment, but worth it.

I've got 3 or 4 size 0(30) factories set up in one of my games and think I will move more there once I get the A6M5. I'm a big fan of the engine bonus (only 540 HI to get an extra 30% each month!), so I should have it once the factories are repaired. I'll let you know.

I think that getting the Sam in early 1944, and certainly in 1943, could do as much damage to an Allied player's pysche as massively winning a carrier battle in 1942. I wonder if that could even be game-breaking. How does it compare to the Hellcat/Corsair anyways?

Without being able to check just yet, I think it is roughly comparable to Allied CV fighters. It's fast, decently gunned, maneuverable, and armor 1. But as you can see above, without drop tanks it only has range 4/5.
