Summary of Operations 11/24/44 (continued)

South Pacific: Current base status of Kirakira –53K supply and 800 fuel on hand, airfield now expanded to size 3(3). Plans are to shortly base Allied LBA fighters and a small number of US Marine DB/TB squadrons at Kirakira to begin close-range interdiction ops against enemy ship traffic inside the Japanese base complex at Tulagi/Guadalcanal. Construction of a small (size 1) port at Kirakira to facilitate limited ship loading/unloading is being started.

Current base status of Rennell Island – 54K supply on hand, airfield now expanded to size 3(5). Short range plans to begin air operations at Rennell Island similar to those outlined above for Kirakira also underway.

Summary of Operations 11/26/44 (continued)

Australia: All remaining LCU elements of Australian 7 RAAF M/W Sqn construction engineers evacuated from Wessel Islands before its capture by Japanese forces have recombined at Townsville to again form the complete unit. Elements of 7 RAAF Sqn had been removed from Wessel Islands via floatplane transport (mainly), one load of LCU elements by transport submarine (SST) – evacuation of the unit scattering elements between multiple destinations. The reformed 7 RAAF Sqn is currently at 80% TOE strength and containing only personnel elements (engineers & support), all engineer vehicle elements of 7 RAAF Sqn destroyed in Japanese air attacks on Wessel Islands. Rebuilding of 7 RAAF Sqn to full TOE strength now underway.

Current base status of Rennell Island – 52K supply on hand (unchanged).

Airfields are now operational at Rennell Island and Kirakira. Aviation support units established at both bases, four US Marine VMF squadrons (48 F4U-1 Corsairs) transferred into the two airfields. Plans are to shortly begin fighter sweeps as part of an overall strategy to operationally shut down the Japanese base complex at Tulagi-Guadalcanal.

Southwest Pacific: 419K supply and 63K fuel on hand in Milne Bay. Japanese night air raids resume. Five Jap submarines enter Milne Bay base hex and lay minefield, subs engaged by US surface ASW. One Jap submarine confirmed sunk, two other Jap subs reported hit in surface ASW attacks. Two US DE’s sunk by mine hits, one British xAK sunk by torpedo. AAR’s follow.
