RE: 9 Mar 44 reports

Post by jdsrae »

Looking at upgrade paths for the IJA medium bombers and I noticed that some of them upgrade to the Ki-119 fighter bomber.
One thing I’m expecting to need more of once the B-29s arrive is more fighters and fighter bombers.
Basically anything with cannons that can fly CAP is worth looking at.
I’ve invested 1x30 factory into the Ki-119 which will barely accelerate it now, but it will start building once the due date comes and then be used to flip those MB units over to FB.
I’m expecting they will then be able to upgrade to the Ki-102b Randy FB and add to the 500+ deep FB force that is currently flying Nicks.

I just did a quick count, and of the 19x IJAAF MB Sentai on the map at the moment 5 can change to FB (some via Ki-119 and others via Randy-b).
One MB Sentai can upgrade to the Peggy NF so I’ve set 1x30 factory to research that too so it starts building as soon as it’s available.
Currently playing my first PBEM, no house rules Scenario 1 as IJ.

Night Air attack on Ledo , at 65,38 – with no port to get the Oil and Fuel to, Ledo has zero strategic value to the red team anymore. It still has some value as a defensive/delay position, but the two INA Regts stationed there have morale in the toilet so they won’t last if attacked. Merrill’s Marauders have been spotted moving along the slow road from Tezpur. Once the Allies have Ledo they will be able to threaten parachute drops and strategic bombing raids into China which could get interesting.

541 Ku K-1 arrives at Takamatsu – issued with D4Y4 and will move to the Marianas.
7th Area Army arrives at Singapore - will stay here to command the defence of Malaya.
27th Tank Regiment arrives at Chiba. 21x light and 59x medium tanks. This unit could be bought out for 145 PP to strengthen defences somewhere in the Pacific, but the Home Islands feel a little sparse for defenders at the moment. They will move to Tokyo to train initially.
26th Tank Regiment arrives at Mutankiang. This unit could move overland into China and beyond, or be bought out to join 27thTank Regt in reserve. As 145 PP is relatively cheap, IGHQ will ponder where to buy them out and send them to, maybe Luzon, or perhaps one to each end of Okinawa.

------------
GEN Doihara’s land skill is too low, even for the Singapore Garrison HQ.
I think I have finally found a good job for GEN Tojo, CIC of 7th Area Army.
GEN Kawabe will take command of 14th Area Army when it arrives as the war is expected to get to Luzon before the end.
GEN Nishio will take command of 6th Area Army, aka South China Area Army.
GEN Doihara will take command of 13th Area Army when it arrive at Nagoya and hopefully stay out of the action for the duration of the war.

RE: 16 Mar 44 reports

Post by jdsrae »

The USN were spotted lining up bombardment runs on Kusaie and/or Ponape, so IJN subs were positioned to try and intercept.
Getting torpedoes away has proven difficult, but landing hits on a BB and a CV in separate contacts was a rare double.
Both subs made it back to Truk where they are still under pierside repair two weeks later. Both subs will need to head north to Yokosuka to fully repair so will have about another month on the sidelines before they return to the Pacific.

-----------------------
Starting to see a bit of a pattern in the Allied tactics, with the CV support sitting about 5 hexes diagonally off the bombardment line.
Based on previous raids, the CVs are likely to move to the NE position circled tomorrow, so that is where a few of the remaining subs will move.
Also an opportunity here to get a strike at the northern USN task forces while the southern USN task forces are out of mutual supporting range of them.
Not during this raid, but maybe a future one if similar tactics are used.

Combined Fleet is still wrapping up routine maintenance in the Marianas, so it would take 3 days to get the last few ships out of pierside.
Kusaie has 500+ land combat value behind level 6 forts, so should hold out a few days against an amphibious assault.

USS Santa Fe was just reported as sunk by collision in the USN TF38/58 hex just SE of Kusaie.
Easy 30 points, if it is true.

That was it, the USN has withdrawn from near Kusaie without an amphibious landing.
Kusaie does have about 600AV and about 20 units on it, so maybe the Allies need to prepare more troops. Or this was just a big distraction and they are going to come hard at the Marianas next instead. The Combined Fleet is still there waiting for them, almost fully repaired, fuelled and ready.

A quick look at the IJA infantry reinforcement list.
Lots of riflemen will arrive over the next few months.
There is a chance to reinforce the 4th Fleet area with all the Ind. Mixed Regts and Bdes that arrive, or use them further back in depth positions.
Maybe NW New Guinea/Banda Sea, Java/Sumatra or Mindanao/Luzon areas.
