----Edit-----

Upon further reflection, I have to restate my question.

Can anyone recommend a decent (operational) history of the Royal Navy in the Age of Sail and prior?

OK, now you're looking for Mynok or Bruce to respond. They are both big fans of the Age of Sail.

There are several good books about the RN during the age of sail. One that comes to mind is The Billy Ruffian an operation history of the HMS Bellerophon a 74 gun SOL during the Napoleonic Wars. she was built in 1786.

Why did the chicken cross the road?

To prove to the possum that it could be done. [:D]

You may be on to something.

Post-Mortem revealed extensive internal injuries. I'm suspecting a Hit & Run pedestrian accident with the victim crawling to the final resting point and succumbing to his injuries.

I have to clean my pocket knife.
Circumstantial evidence. It'll never hold up in court. [:'(]
You know the poor thing might have been playing 'possum...we'll never know since Grit skewered it with his pocket knife. (The tire tracks on it's back were just part of the ruse.)

Coulda been normal pattern variation of the coat. I'm led to believe that the 'tire track' look is commonly found on possums in the United States.

Plus, I wonder if Grit is an accredited and board-certified veterinary wildlife pathologist. Like I said, any defense attorney would have this case dismissed before lunchtime.

Using a pocket knife too? I bet it was dull and unable to cut well. You know what they say-if it doesn't slit, you must acquit. [:'(]

NAM Roger has some very good books out. For a social history see his Anatomy of a Georgian navy. For Britain's rise to Sea Power see The Safeguard of the Sea and for 1649 to 1815 see The Command of The Ocean.

Sounds interesting Bruce. Was she the one that was dismasted on the 1st of June?
