Can anyone recommend a decent (operational) history of the Royal Navy in the Age of Sail and prior?

NAM Roger has some very good books out. For a social history see his Anatomy of a Georgian navy. For Britain's rise to Sea Power see The Safeguard of the Sea and for 1649 to 1815 see The Command of The Ocean.

Thank you Simon. I will definitely check those out. [&o]

Why did the chicken cross the road?

To prove to the possum that it could be done. [:D]

You may be on to something.

Post-Mortem revealed extensive internal injuries. I'm suspecting a Hit & Run pedestrian accident with the victim crawling to the final resting point and succumbing to his injuries.

I have to clean my pocket knife.
Circumstantial evidence. It'll never hold up in court. [:'(]

We do have some physical evidence.

You know the poor thing might have been playing 'possum...we'll never know since Grit skewered it with his pocket knife. (The tire tracks on it's back were just part of the ruse.)

I only had to hit it once with a rock.

Morning chaps.

I seem to have picked up a case of earache so I managed about 2 hours sleep last night [:(]

Then now's the time to do your BoB and AE turns!

No chance old boy, training day today.

----Edit-----

Upon further reflection, I have to restate my question.

Can anyone recommend a decent (operational) history of the Royal Navy in the Age of Sail and prior?

OK, now you're looking for Mynok or Bruce to respond. They are both big fans of the Age of Sail.

I was hoping for Steve, Dixie and Simon too. [:)]

The Age of Sail is outside my usual area of reference I'm afraid.

The opossum death investigation case has been closed.

I talked with the District Attorney and he agreed with Chickenboy. "It's just too circumstantial at this point." Unless we get a confession I simply don't see how we can proceed. Especially taking into account the mentally of a "southern jury" and their prejudice against marsupials.

I'll leave you with this.

A redneck cop is parked along the road late at night and he hears a loud crash. He gets out of his cruiser and walks down the road. The cop sees a car in the ditch. He takes out his notebook and writes, "car in D I T C H." He walks a little further and sees another car in the ditch. Takes out his notebook and again writes, "car in D I T C H." The officer walks a little further and sees a head in the middle of the boulevard. He takes out his notebook and writes, "head in middle of B A, no B O". He kicks the head in the ditch and writes, "head in D I T C H."

It runs under XP, but I suppose it could be a shell put over something that runs on punch cards.
