Hi Leo,

My very loose understanding of "Russia Today" is that it is a Russian government mouthpiece, exclusively funded by the government as a means of 'message development' for the English speaking audience. In my opinion, it bears little semblance to anything that the 'average Russian' of today feels about anything.

While my knowledge of the language allows me not to have to deal with translated sources, I would caution you against making such concrete distinctions about validity of information based on ownership. Personally, I find most non-governmental sources to be vehemently inflammatory to the point that they seem to want to cause dissent using any topic and at any price, including veracity of information. And yes, while government sources tend to be, at best, whitewashed, they do allow one to read between the lines.

As a more local example, I, personally, do not often agree with the commentary of Fox News. But at the same time, I feel that they have brought to light many facts that otherwise would have been unknown. What they subsequently do, or cause to be done with those facts, does not devalue the fact itself.

Again, please take this purely as a suggestion.

But those people they interviewed (including some veterans with medals that were plating full front of their coats [:D]) said that they feel fine... also many times during the day there were documentary pieces about Arctic convoys, brave British sailors and "Land and Lease"... thus things are changing (i.e. Soviets before always downplayed the help western allies gave to the Russia)...

I think that the materials sent via LL were always appreciated. But at the same time they've always felt (justifiably, I feel) that it was Russian blood that won the war, while the western allies had a comparatively easy time of it (also not without basis). So I dont think I would be too far off base if I were to summarize Russia's attitude on the topic as "thanks for the spam and trucks and all, but it would have been nice if you had managed to hit Germany in a meaningful way BEFORE we got to Poland and lost millions of lives we would not have lost if you had".

On the other hand, and to my personal chagrin, Russian historians completely discount the Pacific theater, which I feel is both terribly unfair and a serious error.

I've always thought that the Red Army didn't get enough credit for breaking the back of the Wehrmacht. I'm willing to give them credit for that.

But WWII was about more than the Wehrmacht alone. The Russian's record against the other branches of the German armed forces was less complete and their record against the Japanese / PTO was entirely lacking substance. While the Russians did take some heavy body blows, they couldn't have won the war without us, or vice-versa. I don't think 'Russian blood won the war', although they (in particular Russian civilians) suffered disproportionally.

It's nice that they're honoring our contribution to the Second World War at their remembrance ceremony. I hope that we respond in kind in the near future too and remember the shared effort and comaradarie that we're capable of in a time of great danger.
