I got an email from the past.  It was from all the ship builders who built your 4 fast BB's.  They said something about if they had know you were going to just use these things as glorified AA platforms to escort CV's they never would have built them for you.  If there was ever a time to use them, this was it.  Those 4 BB's, plus an 8 DD screen, would have turned his WWI era BB's into paper weights. Enjoy having these fine ships burn fuel for the next 3 years and then be retired as sorry road side attractions where people will ask "What did these ships do in the war"? and they answer be: "Glorified cruise ships"

Dumb question, I have been digging for advice ever since Nemos post on gun range and speed... excellent btw...when you say screen... do you mean two seperate TF.. or one with the bb and the destroyers? Thanks.

To use or not use the fast battleships is a tough decision, especially for a newer player.  To me, this is one of those areas where you have to defer to the player.  He has a much better feel for the overall situation and whether the time and conditions were right to employ a strong but rare asset.  An argument can be made that GreyJoy should have used them here, but I say he made a legit (i.e., well-reasoned and almost instinctual) call not to do so. 

On the whole you are in much better shape in this game GreyJoy.

On another topic, the sheer number of aircraft losses in this game are astounding. Surely a bloodbath record for AE.

I am going to concur here. He could have just as easily "lanced" a few of those fast BBs as not. BBs don't belong in surface fights in confined waters. Not at this stage of the war. Let your cruisers and excellent fletcher DDs carry the fight. The end of the year will bring tons of them and much better torpedoes. Fast BBs are there to protect carriers. Nobody wanted to admit it but that is exactly what their best use was in the war. As his DD fleet degrades his captial ships will become much more vulerable.

Scen#2 gives the Japanese the entire build out of the super DD ( around 12 instead of the one built) and a flood of late war escort type DDs that are suited to killing subs but too slow and weak to take on modern Allied DDs. Perhaps some other DDs as well but I am not sure. But he is pretty much already out of CLs and that will hurt.

Ok guys, now i have a question for you.

The evacuation is going on. Now covered by a HUGE number of CA+DDs...Hordes of LBs are coming and going from Tulagi...my PTs are useless and my mines doesn't seem to work well now...

The KB is stationing at Buka (Bouganville)....should i send my fast BBs preceded by my Cleveland Class CLs?
Should i committ? It seems that there's no consensus on this matter....

will my Cleveland Class CLs be a decent enemy for his HUGE CAs?

Well, it's all about how much damage you want to do, and how much you're willing to risk. I'd probably commit a strong surface TF with at least two fast battleships screened by a few cruisers and 7-8 destroyers, but then again I don't have your (probably wise) caution. If you commit the battleships, there's a good deal of risk that they will be torpedoed and sunk. But if they can land some main battery hits on those Japanese CAs you might take several of them down as well, or at least make them easy prey for any subs/bombers you can muster in the daytime. The good news is that you're battleships, if damaged, don't have to get far to a friendly port so long as your CAP can stop his bombers, which it seems to be pretty good at. If anything though, I'd probably send the North Carolinas. As much as I love that ship (used to visit it every summer at the beach) she and Washington are older, and if you lose them you'll still have the South Dakotas and later Iowas, as well as the Alaskas for carrier escort. If you punch some 16in holes in Rader's best cruisers, well, he's not getting any more. His CLs are being terribly attrited, his DDs decently well. Of his fast battleships, at least some are out of action, maybe 1 is sunk. His CAs are his surface reaction fleet now, and if you hurt them badly, it will be another asset of his gone to the bottom of the sea.

How is the moonlight look, and how has your experience been with Japanese cruiser torpedoing so far? Also, will the fact that his ships are in a huge TF interfere at all with their combat efficiency? (I don't know this, maybe an expert here does)If his ships can't maneuver well enough to get off an early close range torpedo barrage, your BBs might truly give them a sound beating.

Your BBs will come in daytime? That bodes well for avoiding knife-fight torpedo ranges, doesn't it? Maybe you should send in just 2 of them with the CAs and DDss,and see how they perform, if you don't want to risk your entire fast BB fleet.

Moonlight is at 100% and no, i don't have any experience against his CAs...at least not at equal terms....

Don't know...thanks for the input mate....have to think about it....tough togh tough decision....

And my Cleveland Class CLs? They are escorted by Fletchers....while the BB arent'.....is it worth sending them? It seems to me that they are badly outgunned....and without torps....

Well, if you have new BBs and CAs in your TF, then the role of the destroyers will simply be to keep the Japanese destroyers occupied and not torpedoing your capital ships. They won't need to do as much damage (or at least they shouldn't-might want to ask the experts on whether you can expert accuracy from your gunners). Your destroyers simply have to protect, and take hits and sink if need be. Whereas if your going to up against the Japanese CAs with Clevelands and Fletchers, your ships are going to have to get in close and either score torpedo hits or plenty of 5in and 6in hits. I'm not sure how many gun hits on average it takes from Clevelands or Fletchers to hurt Japanese CAs.

Ok, i'll try that.

Here's the plan.

A TF composed by CA Australia+ 2 CLs Omaha Class+ 8 Fletchers DDs will attack Tulagi at night.
A TF composed by CA Wichita, CA Astoria, CL Boise, 1 Cleveland Class CL and 8 Fletcher DDs will arrive in the morning
A TF composed by 2 N.Dakota BBs+ 3 Pensacola Class CAs + 8 Bristol Class DDs will arrive at morning.
A TF composed by 4 DDs will take the longer route and will try to reach Thousands Ships Bay during the day 2

All my TF should get back to Karaikira where will be covered by 400 fighters

150 4Es will hit Thousands. Both the AF and the Port

The KB is the main threat...i know....but i hope he doesn't imagine i'll use Karaikira as a returning base. I've used Lunga for several weeks now...and now i hope he will sweep (cause if he wants the KB to come in and if i know him a little he will sweep my bases first) Lunga and Tulagi....Hopefully i can surprise him....

There's a big chance that he'll move his CAs back....i've ordered 15 subs (what's left undamaged of my sub fleet) to cover the possible "exit routes" from Tulagi...let's see if i get lucky this time

Reek, I mean Greyjoy,....have you thought about bombing the snot out of the remaining troops on Tulagi and sending in a real assault to kill the bejebbers out of the little yellow bastards that are still there? You know, like use a mailed fist, ball it up with a piece of lead in your palm and smash them in the mouth? Kill the hell out of them all. Then he can sail up, pick up the bodies and give them a decent burial.

Stop meely-mouthing around with those chumps. Jump all over them and pound them to bloody pulp now.

This game is about accumulating points and that is a nice bunch of points waiting to be harvested.

In the meantime, anything that is not attacking those chumps should go on naval attack and torpedo/bomb those ships loitering in the area.

Several people have advised attriting him here. They are right and you have done some of that, but do not let up. Now's a great time to smash his fleet and those beleaguered LCUs.

Remember to group ships that sail at basically the same speed and be sure that the core units have the same arrmament. Of couse they should have escorts with them, but ensure the escorts are faster or same speed as the core units. TFs of 8 are probably ideal. I would not exceed 12 ships in a SCTF. And watch the commanders. Put good ones in the TFs you want to attack with.

Now, Reek, seek the enemy and batter him about the head and shoulders until he sqeals no more.

Dont worry if you cant stop the japanese here without putting your force into too much danger (If is a low risk chance, grab it).

I love the guys pushing you into a battle where they only have 10% or less of the information.

This isnt the final battle and letting him get 50% of his men away isnt going to hurt too much.

Keep up the pressure, make sure he hurts, but keep your powder dry and available for the push back towards the home islands.

Again my response was too late to bother Rader. He has been again one step forward me

His CAs (that were in a fast transport mission[X(]) stayed only the first night and then fled away. My BBs arrived at Thousands ships bay only on the second night (why not on the first morning as planned is out of my comprehension) and found only a couple of LB TFs....quite an overkill if you ask me.... however we managed to kill on ships nearly 3000 men...which is something at least.

My Australia TF tangled with his CAs....we delivered a couple of non penetrating hits, while his 20cm cannons always penetrate.... however i managed to get away without too many damages and at least 3 of his DDs suffered bad collisions during the combat and one should have sunk already...

Our 4Es arrived in good numbers over Thousands Ships bay but somehow their efficiency sucked today, destroying only 24 planes on the ground...anyway not a bad day in the air. Our escort prooved strong enough not to suffere that much against a stiff and numerous CAP.

17k men remaining at Tulagi...he's succeeding.There seems to be no way for me to stop this daily bleeding.
