I am very glad I did not buy the AE game as none of this thread makes any sense to my poor old brain. Silly me I expect a game to install, run and be able ton play.
reading this thread just makes things more confusing. I planned to wait till all the bugs were fixed but in this case the game is so complicated that the more bugs fixed the more bugs show up. Maybe it has to do with creating this monster from a previous game who's hard code and game code can't deal with the new version without massive and numerous updates, patch's and hot fix's......Naw this could not be true as it is coming from a total tech moron (me)

Madgamer,
Please don't mistake trouble getting an an add-on utility such as WitpStaff to run as a probem with WITP-AE itself.
To use an old saying, that is like comparing apples and oranges.
Add-on's often take extra effort to configure and run correctly.

I would have to add that I have been playing this game for a few months now and know exactly how scary it is but that is its beauty. Play the scenarios to get the combat routines sorted and learn some basics about movement and then play the main campaign but don't expect to play it through. I have had two training starts, one lasted 30 game days the other 90 game days, using scenario 2 (I play the Japanese so this is masocistic enough as a beginner). I then regularly save and peek at what is going on i.e what is the AI doing, how accurate is my recon. These two self made tutorials along with the infinite wisdom that abounds on this site leaves me with a game that each time I pick it up amazes me more and more with its depth. If you deal with it one step at a time though and do not try to be an expert in each bit, it is amazing how quickly huge scary tasks become second nature.
Best investment I ever made
Chris
p.s are you in trouble if you go to sleep wondering whether you should go for Tojo's over Tony's...just wondered.

Yes, the last update to Java seems to have broken witpstaff.
My PC without version 18 update is still working, but my main development one (which did update a few days ago) has ceased to run witpstaff.
I think it is only when trying to create a new database. Original DBs and loading saves look like they still work okay.
[O/S is XP 32bit with witpstaff 0.8 and 0.7]

Yeah,?@uninstall java and reinstall with a previous release like jdk/jre 6 update 17
http://java.sun.com/products/archive/
Dont let it update and
Then delete the DB and try again.
Michael, cannot supply you with this ... it is a java compatibility problem with witpstaff... I havent tested witpTracker yet as Im in an airport bound for sydney ...

Thants Damian for the response it works fine now.
For any one else here is the link to the JAVA version that worked for me
https://cds.sun.com/is-bin/INTERSHOP.en ... TypeFilter
The specific file name is jre-6u17-windows-i586 An important note is that the 64bit versions of JAVA DO NOT WORK. So even if you have a 64bit PC, you MUST use the 32 bit version of JAVA. Also, as Damian stated, do not allow the older version automaticly update Otherwise you have to uninstall it and re-install the old one again. At least until WitPStaff is fixed, unlikely at this point I would think.

What file do I need to edit to fix this? I tried editing the WitP text file located in the db directory where I found the lines that caused the error but that did not work. Any ideas?

I am unsure what you have done, but I would delete the db folder and reinitialize the db and see if that works. It appears to me that the db is corrupted.

The warnings should not be a problem. the exception of 2079 is one that was fixed with the WitPstaff 0.8 upgrade.
Make sure you have the latest version of Staff.

I installed the hotfix and confirmed the new witpDecoder2.jar file is in the correct directory. I have the C++ release required (8) and the latest version of Java. But when I try to initialize the database, I get the following error message:
java.sql.SQLException: Wrong data type:java.lanf.IllegalArgumentException in statement [CREATE MEMORY TABLE "Turn2Date" ("date" DATE default '0000-00-00']
(I type in the message since I couldn't cut-and-paste it).
If it helps, I haven't had any trouble installing and using Ae tracker.

I think you can set it up to use a different version of runtime Java by using a environment variable. I'll have to check my reference tomorrow.
