No ambushes. This is almost over, mercifully for the Germans.

River Crossing

Well it begins again...

Seems like a little more of the same old bad luck that I have been dragging around for a while. The American 175th INF reinforced with elements of the 21st ENG have launched a rubber boat assault in our northern sector vicinity of the Destroyed railroad bridge.

We have scarecly any troops manning the river bank, but those that are there took full advantage of the American vulnerability in their rubber rafts. A single squad has almost turned back the assault south of the damaged railroad bridge, while North of the bridge the American has managed to reach the shore.

I have one 81mm mortar in contact, and prep him to start firing on the landing side of the river. The rest of my indirect fire assets are nowhere to be found!! We could have made this assault extremely painful to the American if only our arty was available, or we had been manning the river bank in greater force.

Maybe Arty problems plague both sides, as the American assaults the river without cover of smoke. A minor barrage of smoke starts to fall near the center of the map, as my turn comes to an end, but maybe this is only a diversion for the assault on the north sector.

A couple more well placed machine guns and B & C Companies of the 175th would be swimming with the fishes!!

Well, that hurt! Not much I could do about it either. Sitting ducks are sitting ducks. One company almost obliterated without so much as a wimper. The rest of the boys should be fish bait next turn since one of my 60mm mortar squads failed to receive the amended fire order I sent them and they bombarded a the secondary I initially assigned to them. There will be some 'spaining to do IF I ever see that mortar crew after this ill-fated assault.

Very little damage inflicted that turn. Most of my squads manning the riverbank are suppressed. Arty is still out of communication, and the American horde is now ashore.

If he follows his first wave of infantry with some armor, I might as well cash in now. I have precious little to scrape together a defense, and almost no arty. Looks like another long painful one for the German side!

Well, those German 105s weren't out of contact!

The job now is to push the Germans off of the riverbank so the rest of the men can come across safely. Where there is no contact, I'm moving carefully to try to avoid being spotted.

Well, after losing a whole company in one turn, I suspect this is where the US decide that rubber boats and bullets don't mix well! Especially without much arty support.

While my two 81mm Mortars wear their tubes out, the 105mm guns finally come alive...Now if those big guns will just wake up!!

While it definitely was fun watching the Americans sink in those silly little rubber boats, the task is now at hand. My mortars have only a basic load and I have no means of re-supply. Ammo for my single battery of 105mm won't last forever, and my battery of 150mm is still not in contact.

Ideally we should have never let the American set foot on this side of the river...Problem was the river bank was not manned as it should have been.

That said, We have very few assets in which to counter the American assaults. We have significant contact North of the blown railroad bridge, and in the center where the swampy finger sticks out into the river from the west bank. So far we have no reports of any American vehicles having made the crossing, and once they make it to this side of the river, there is very little that I can do to prevent him from having free reign.

 What to do now....

Initial wave is ashore...

Mortars are out of ammo...

I have lost contact with the American forces...

:D Business as usual for my fine German forces

The incessant arty has stopped pounding my men in the swampy area in the middle of the map. They move forward only to be blasted by a couple MGs. :( I do manage to take out a log bunker that was guarding a tiny value VH.

In the north, I eliminate a zugtrup and an infantry squad only to be pinned down by a sniper hiding in the rocks of a RR track. If I can't see him, I can't kill him.:(

This has been tougher than the initial landing on the beaches.

Trying to let my scant Arty do what little talking I can muster...Still waiting for that inevitable second wave of boats to cross the river and bring some serious pain to my valiant defenders.

Trying to regain caontact with the Americans that have already crossed...105MM now reports that they are out of ammo as well

Keep waiting for the other shoe (second wave) to drop. Ammo is low, troop density is pretty thin. Once the American gets himself organized my toughest battle will be to try and not become the crap through the Goose that Patton talked about. Thank god the terrain is slowing him down, cause I sure can't!

Americans are increasing their penetration near the destroyed railroad bridge. Not sure of the total number of Americans that have managed to cross to our side. I am starting to feel some pressure near the buildings that are on the base knuckle of the swampy finger in the center of the map, but so far I seem to be holding my own...Where are those nasty American armored vehicles?? Those .50 Cal's are not mounted on air...

Starting to get cocky and think I might be able to prevent those canal bridges from falling into enemy hands :)

This AAR< IMO, should go to the HOF!

and theres still 4 scens to go!

From Shoe!

"I am in the uncomfortable position of telling my opponents that I am deploying again on Monday. This deployment is much nicer (and shorter) than my last deployment. For the next six weeks I will be in Pesaro, Italy (northern Adriatic coast), assisting the Italian Army stand up a new Psychological Operations Unit. I am sorry for any inconvenience I may be causing.

I eagerly await my re-deployment and an opportunity to try and resist the Invading Americans. Take care of you and yours and I will make contact when I return. Thank you for all your matches and your patience.

-Shoe"

God Speed Shoe! And thank you for serving freedom!

My men will try to collect themselves from the 105mm and 150mm pounding they have taken. You know, a change of shorts and dusting off the uniform. Then they'll cool their heels until Shoe returns from deployment.

A Little Negligence

by CPT Shoe
Got A little negligent in filling out my battlefield reports since my "vacation" so I will spend some time getting anyone who is interested back up to speed.

The American first wave forces loaded up in their little rubber boats and made a crossing of the Vire river near the destroyed Saint Lo-Cherbourg railroad bridge. There were a few valiant German defenders who had overwatch of the river, and the initial American casualties of that first crossing were moderate to heavy. Unfortunately I did not have overwatch of the entire Vire river in our area of operations, and significant American Forces (multiple companies of the 175th, supported by Engineers from the 121st) crossed the Vire and gained a foothold on a large finger like peninsula just south of the destroyed railroad bridge. The American forces worked their way west towards the knuckle of this finger under German artillery barrages and a few token troops who faught hard. The knuckle was anchored by a what once was a very nice Chateau, but now is nothing more than smoking ruins. At least one other wave of American forces (G Co, 175th) crossed the Vire river near the Railroad bridge, and eventually linked up with the forces that had been working their way west, down the finger. German losses included two 88's that were in ackward positions, but could not be moved because of lack of suitable transport.

Just prior to the link-up on the shores of the Vire river, the 101st Airborne arrived at the scene on our north-west flank. The 101st attacked on the outskirts of the little village Montmartin-en-Graignes. They are advancing South and East after being blocked along the road trying to make link up with the forces along the Vire river. So far the 101st progress has been slow, and they just recently have penetrated the fringe of the village of Montmartin-en-Graignes. So far, a few German defenders have managed to prevent the 101st and the 175th from linking forces.

A little farther south, the river shields the dominant terrain feature of La-Raye hill (just to the east of the village of La-Raye). Multiple American machine gun teams have made a crossing of the Vire river in what looks like an attempt to gain the hill, and maybe some eyes on the Vire-Taute Canal bridges.

The village of La-Raye still stands in the way of the two pronged American attack in the north, and they will have a long march to reach the Canal bridges.

If further crossings are made (I still have not encountered any American Armor) in the vicinity of La-Raye hill I will have a serious fight (How can it get any more serious than it currently is??) on my hands.

I have been reinforced with a platoon of Pz-pioneers and a pair of Luchs, and as long as the American Armor remains absent, I just might be able to hold the Canal Bridges.
