In this game (with Loka/Hartwig) Japan has a stiff number of points that, on the surface, mirrors how many you had going deep into 1945. But Japan still has 14,395 base points, which is a lot. It would seem that you have some room to whittle away the denominator by reducing that base-point total. That would help you a lot.

Army loss points for the Allies are pretty hefty.

Tons of room to score points for Strategic Bombing, of course.

Do you have similar house rules - no more than 50 bombers set to nighttime airfield or port missions over a given target? That will be an issue if Hartwig concentrates his AA well and develops good night fighters and night-fighter doctrine.

This is from Loka/Bullwinkle, and they were both adamantly against any form of HR. So there are none, which in this game ended up being a bit hard on the Allied player in terms of troops lost and available. All of the IJA [R] from China (and Manchuria for that matter) could move to Burma, and did. There are a lot of gutted Commenwealth IDs and replenishments won't make it up, ever.

A caveat is that there are a lot of IJA [R] outside of China, so I made it a priority to get there at all costs quickly. The landing at Pakhoi means a massive launch point for Allied armies to roll through the underbelly and cut off 500k + IJA troops. Could be more. Plus if I can get to Chungking it's only currently got 24k defending, and that is only about one IJA ID plus support and HQs. Only the 3-4 buyable Chinese Corps are on map, so taking back Chunking or Chengtu is a priority for that as well.

There are no house rules on bombing anything, but I kind of use my own since I think 50/base per night is still enough to do what I need to do. The pilots pool was interesting when I took over and I've got it into the kind of shape I want now, but it's thin. Bomber pilots were scarce, good 70+ air/EXP fighter jocks had 20-30 defensive skills, and 2E/4E pools were almost non-existent.

I have a few theories I'm trying that have worked so far, but it's early days, and now I'll have to adapt to a new player, so I'm not sure what doors will open and which will close.

So far though I've not needed to sweep or bomb heavily defended bases at all. The Allies have taken North Borneo, Southern Luzon, all of Malaya, most of Sumatra and now Indochina, with China proper and Northern Luzon on the cards next. I've never tried to tackle a big base with 500 fighters because I haven't yet had to in these four months so far. If I do I think playing the IJ so much in the end gives me a few thoughts on how to work through it. As I go I'll talk through those, and test in game to see if the ideas hold water or not. [;)]

Trapping the LCUs is incredibly important, but interestingly I won't be able to redeem their VP values for a long time. Too much work to do moving into Strat bombing range and blitzing China if possible.

Some of the good bases will fall, but a few of those will also have to be circled back to get. Manila is one, Palembang is another, although that has limited base value, there are about 100k troops there. Another 60k in Singers and I will try for that very soon (troops already nearly prepped) as I need the shipyard badly. I'll not cross shocking though, as I want to land first, and land again, and make his troops batter themselves with bombardments, and bomb, and make them waste supplies, and then when I do attack have troops on hand to rotate in. I'll try do DA and rotate so thing go quickly. Although, who know what the forts are now. I will send a small sacrificial armored unit across the causeway once troops have landed and are in place.

I'll go through next steps soon, as two more landings, followed by a possible third, will happen this month. If those all work out I'll be in range to build Strat bombing fields that will be in range of 2/3 of Honshu and all of the SW by mid-March. Fingers crossed.

Sent out some raiders around the Chinese coast to pick off ASW. Got some. A small bombardment at Hong Kong too.

Hue falls. So does Rangoon. Troops begin to flood into Pakhoi and the Japanese continue to try to suppress Kwangchowan. I haven't gotten any more troops in since the paras took it, but that's fine. I'll send some landing craft over with engineers soon.

Luangprabang holding on by a thread as the trapped Japanese look for revenge. [:)]

I've been sending recon to the Marianas for a while and it seems like the troops there are pretty steady. At least an ID in each of the main bases, probably a bit more. I'll give these a pass since I think Strat bombing can much more easily be accomplished from China in this one.

The 3rd seems a bit quiet on the surface, but a lot is going on in terms of movement of troops, fuel and supply as well as staging for the next invasions. I'll be moving to confuse soon in several directions around the PI, encouraging a build-up and possibly strikes emanating fro and directed at protecting Manila. I'll then be aiming for Northern Luzon and the Chinese coastline. More on that soon.

More troops arrive at Pakhoi and those on the Indochinese coastline extend North and South toward Saigon and Vinh. I'll try for both of these but essentially all troops below China are now becoming cutoff by the move into Pakhoi and subsequent challenge at Nanning. If I take that base it's going to be very difficult for the IJA to save all of these troops to the South.

The Japanese continue to try to harass and suppress Kwangchowan and Kiungshan, but that isn't really doing much to slow Allied investment in the area.

They do launch big strikes on Luangbrabang in the mountains, which was the point from which paras took some of the Chinese bases, and more tanks arrived there today. I'll begin a pullout using air transports back to Burma as this base is both untenable and unneeded now. Nice to pick off some Japanese bombers and escorts though.

Obiterated a tank regiment near Nanning. I think not much else will try this route to get into China. Troops still unloading into Pakhoi. The IJAAF are still trying to disrupt landing and building in this South China area, but it's having little effect. I'll not go out of my way to defend these bases as I can't see how Japan could make an attempt to take anything back here.

In Burma the IJA is pulling all of the way back to the rail toward Thailand. The Allied forces are building and moving to fill the gap. They'll make a small stand at Moulmein it seems, and I'll go around rather than crossing the river, since time is not important.

Tried a small night bombing mission at Manila and discovered he has a huge NF and daylight F CAP up. Looks like I could attack in daylight without having to worry about about half of the listed fighters here. Good to know.

Tried some more limited night strikes on airfields. I use these as harassment strikes, and I do limit myself to no more than 50 bombers per target per turn. The results are usually moderately successful in destroying a few airframe on the ground (which also has the added benefit of lowering group moral if a day sweep/strike is planned following) and gives great intel on airframe types in the base.

Here I found Udon Thani has less modern types defending and I can easily sweep with confidence here. It also gives some intel on radar/flak and what percentage of daylight fighter are on night CAP vs daytime CAP.

I began clearing mines at Singers, which gave some pretty detailed info on Japanese forces there and what level of CD gun to expect for upcoming landings. It looks like two base forces with DP gun capability, one with only 8cm DP, the other with 12cm and 8cm guns. So moderate defences that cruisers should handle easily. The embedded DDs took mine hits which is unfortunate but will retire and should be fine.

In the day the Japanese sweep extensively over troops near Pakhoi walking toward Nanning. The CAP and CV air handle these effectively, and the subsequent bombing strikes are crushed. There is a kami strike of about 100 A6M8 escorted by Franks that damages three CVEs, but none are in sinking condition. Still, I've got to be careful there. Hong Kong and Canton are close and much bigger strikes could come.

IJN E-boats are a menace around Formosa and into the South China Sea and take out the Kingfish today. Soon DD raids will try to intercept and give some back. I've now got bases close enough to flank in and out without leaving them hanging.

On Sumatra I've opened the door to Sabang, a long staled Allied operation begun by Bullwinkle and held by strong IJA forces including the Wake CD guns. Unable to support or bring off the troops by sea I've decided to wait and get them through bedside control from captured bases further South. A small armoured unit just opened the side and now the Allies can get out while the IJA are trapped and likely out of supply.

The rest of Sumatra is coming under Allied control, with forces landing near Medan and marching on that base. The air is controlled from Malaya and heavy bombing of troops and airfields is suppressing any fight the defenders had left.

At Luangprabang the IJA have brought in more armour and I've lifted about half of my troops out in a day. The Allied transports are poised and haven't done much yet with no China to support.

On the 10th the Japanese attack there only kills off a remaining 54 support squads, which is well worth the effort for the gain of three bases on the Chinese coastline through para-drop from this base.

The Japanese are trying limited sweeps, which do well in smaller bases in the rear, as the Franks on the 10th at Pegu. Against my Spit VIII, P-51D and P-47D25 the Allies have an advantage even in defence.

Things are going well so far in the progress toward both cutting off the Burma Army (which in this game may include a large portion of the Chinese Expeditionary Army since no PPs for borders are needed) and getting to Chungking. Nanning is the first key destination, and although it has a defending ID and change, bombing has reduced the defenders significantly. Vinh is another target, but floods of IJA troops are coming through Thailand, so I may not get there in time to take it easily. If that's the case I'l shift around and send the Indochina based troops to Pakhoi (and hopefully Swatow if I can also capture that soon).

The mine clearing continues with a few hits on covering DDs at Singers. Loading for invasion will begin soon.

The Japanese encounter a robust night CAP of Black Widows at Pakhoi, which takes care of the pesky strikes there. In the daytime they try a variety of limited sweeps and strikes, all of which are dealt with fairly easily by the DS and LBA CAP combined. I did see two Bettys drop Okhas for the first time!

On the 12th a fairly strong cruiser TF hits Kiungshan, slicing through the DD/DE cover (sinking DD Craven) and bombarding with limited effect. The day strikes are larger after a few sweeps and are massacred with not hits scored.

Cleared some mines the hard way at Singers. DD Barton will stagger into port. Should make it though.

Tried a bombardment at Haiphong and stepped into the tar baby. It is the turn he decided to unleash a few groups of kakis here. The CLs got trashed, but none will sink, surprisingly.

Near Vinh the Allies push back the ragged defenders, but troops moving through the hills should beat me there to reinforce unfortunately. I'll instead plant to clear this road, then shift amphibiously to Pakhoi and up toward Liuchow.

Ships are now moving to two new invasion spots. My hope is to straddle Formosa by landing at Laong on Northern Luzon, then take Appari. On the other flank I'll aim for Swatow and Chachow. He could cause trouble from either or both sides, flying from Manila/Clark or Takao/Hong Kong. The whole DS will cover both operations.

Troops are nearing Nanning now and should shock over soon. Fingers crossed he doesn't have forts 9 there.

A quiet turn as most of the action is milk-runs and rear area clean-ups. Supply lands at Sinabang to aide the final capture of that island off of Sumatra, long contested. Troops are moving on Medan on Sumatra after being released from Sabang (the IJA troops there now trapped. Isolated units on Malaya and in Southern Thailand are being eradicated. Trapped IJA pockets in Burma are being closed and taken. It's fun to think though that it wasn't long ago in game terms that these areas were actually very heated and not under Allied control at all.

This is the next plan for advancing the Allies into Strat bombing range. Both of the targets, Laong and Swatow will already give a base capable of launching B-29s to critical targets in Japan, but nearby bases are the real intended targets. Aparri on Luzon would allow a great launching point for further operations. Swatow allows coverage of the planned swift invasion of Formosa. From there the plan is to Strat bomb as much of the Home Islands as possible while advancing through China overland, freeing Chungking (and getting the Chinese army back in action), and a next stop in Korea to destabilise the Manchurian Army. Hopefully the Soviets could even get involved early.

Ouch!! Loka sent in the dogs, and caught a loaded troop transport convoy in the Celebes Sea near Manado. I have escorts and patrols marauding through the area but these IJN ships slipped through and found pay dirt. Luckily they only sank an AGC but commanders are not happy at having to be plucked out of the sea after this skirmish, enduring several shell hits and two long lance strikes.

Allied air strikes did find the intruders by the afternoon but only managed two hits on DD Sakura.

Nanning airfield is suppressed and troops bombed in anticipation of the river crossing. I think unless there are level 8-9 forts the Allies will take the base on the first shock.

You don't mention the huge lopsided victory at Toungoo and it looks like you coloured the losses red for the wrong side! All those IJA squads destroyed plus guns and vehicles is a very nice haul and a good step toward evening up the LCU points loss on the VP scoreboard.

Thx. Good find. Yeah, there are a lot of persistent IJA defenders now behind what have become the Allied lines. Things have moved quickly in game time over the last month. There is still another ID in Burma to break down, and a LOT of IJA defenders on the Paoshan to Lashio Rd with more heading that way.

If all goes to plan the entire army that was in Burma will be cut off by the Allied move to Nanning and beyond. Once I gain the rail at Liuchow, things will be really hard to fix in China for him. Recon shows there aren't a lot of big IJA units defending ay base from Kweiyang to Changsha. Even Chungking may only have one ID in it. So speed is critical there. If I can free the Chinese Army and have them respawn at Chungking I can use the rest of the Allies to move on toward the Home Islands.

Chengtu is the alternative respawn base to Chungking so you might be able to grab that one more easily if the defence is weak.
