4x USN DDs had been spotted snooping around near Sabang/Port Blair a couple of days ago, but I am not sure this is the same task force.
Combined Fleet could probably cause some chaos down here, but most ships have June, July or August 1944 upgrades.

This shows the upcoming ship upgrades for the next two months.
Then most of the CVs can start upgrades on 1 Aug 44.

Sub attack near Shikuka at 125,45 – more USN subs are being spotted in NEAF, indicating at least some further interest in the area from the Allies. Will they keep advancing into the Kuriles now that they have retaken the Aleutians? The Kuriles are reasonably well defended, with most potentially able to defend against a single Allied Division, but a multiple Divisions assault couldn’t be stopped.

E No.26 arrives at Tokyo – these are handy little ships that are going straight on to escort duty. With all the troop reinforcements arriving I am finally using all the xAP that have been safely tucked away at Tokyo for the first few years of the war. I have been using 3-4x escorts per convoy, but that means the Escort Divs have a mix of Type C and Type D escorts. If I make the Escort Divs 5x ships each they will then have all Type C or Type D in them, eg: E20, E22, E24, E26, E28 can work together. The only Escort No. # that I’ve lost so far is E19. All but 3 of these ships are escorting troop convoys at the moment, with those 3 escorting a resources convoy home from the Philippines.

J1N1-Sa Irvings are in production but now that 1 Jun 44 has arrived the Zero Nightfighter can also be built. The pre-war plan was to build some of the Zero NF to upsize some NF units, but this unit can’t be resized.
953 Ku T-1 arrives at Takao – 12 plane Jake unit. I will upsize it to 24 and it will be used for NavS and ASW. This unit renames to 901 Ku T-7 in Jan 1945, so it will stay somewhere close to Formosa.
Kiyosumi Maru-1 arrives at Tokyo – bought back, it will upsize to 24 and might take training pilots to NEAF to add some more NavS and ASW to counter the Allied subs in that area.

Engine production review.
Nakajima Ha-35 engine production is stopped and the factories switch to Mitsubishi Ha-43.
The factories were 2x size 270 but will only be repaired to 2x size 150.
The Nak 35 pool is large but has been calculated to be used up by late war aircraft: Zero and Irving Nightfighters, Oscar III and IV, and 1000x Toka.
There will now be 6x size 150 factories on the Mitsu 43 to ramp production up to 900/month. They are needed for George-5, Sam-2, Sam-3, Shinden, plus a few Patsy, Ki-83 and Ki-95. Lots of them will be used for engine bonuses as the research factories start to repair to size 30.

Aircraft production review.

The Sally factory, which has been dormant for about 8 months, converts to Zero Night Fighter production and expands to 30/month.

The first Type 3 Medium Tanks arrive at Sabang as 23rd Tank Regt takes upgrades there.
+50% is quite a good A/Arm upgrade compared to the T1 Mdm Tank that it replaces, thanks to the 75mm gun.
These Type 3s might be wasted at Sabang, so I might move them back to Burma to try and help counter the Arakan push.
I need the 3x Tank Divs and all Tank Regts that can to upgrade to these bad boys as quickly as possible, but all three Divs are at the wrong end of jungle tracks on the Burma-India border and the monsoon rains have started.
The Tank units might need to move back to Burma before they can access enough supply to upgrade.

Overall, I think your VP situation looks quite reasonable - if (and it's a big if) you can effect a withdrawal from Burma without getting those units cut off.

Thinking longer term for Burma, I do wonder if you would be better off seriously shortening the frontline in the face of the '44 Allied OOB here. A concentration around Rangoon, plus blocking forces at Paoshan and on the flanks into Thailand seems a much safer bet to my mind, as I think you can't hope to hold the Central Burma plains at this point in time.

I don't think you can defend forward in Burma at this point in the war, so I think it's worth evaluating what the overall goal here is - to my mind the real prize in Burma for the Allies is Rangoon - Akyab and Ramree can't provide anything close to the supply throughput as Rangoon, so a refocused defence around shorter lines here seems a good idea. That said, keep in mind that a landing in the panhandle is always an option!

Some other rumination from me on looking at your Luzon screenshot from past experience. My mindset when defending the PI is that Luzon is the ultimate goal, and everything needs to be geared towards making it as time consuming a campaign as possible.

- Manila is only at forts six? That base is a prime candidate for Forts 9 in my view, simply because it offers the Allies the only realistic chance at a sizeable repair shipyard west of Pearl Harbour that can be largely immune from IJ bombing raids. If you stick the Wake CD unit at Bataan, and a hefty garrison at Clark, you can make that campaign a real slog for the Allies.

- Cabanatuan might be worth some effort to develop into a mid-size airbase. Granted, the terrain is clear but it is inland and on the rail network, so provides a nice supplement to Manila and Clark.

- The two island bases SW of Bataan (Lubang and Calpan) are worth developing as medium airbases. They're reasonable terrain, and you can be sneaky and keep them running with barge/fast transport traffic out of Manila Bay, and if the Allies go for the traditional South-North approach then they'll help you keep Manila viable for a bit longer, and once Luzon is in play, it becomes an exercise in supply stockpiles.


On your tank units, I think Burma might no longer be the most suitable front for them. To my mind, at this point in the war they belong sitting as a QRF force ready to respond to the next Allied invasion, rather than as line units.

At this point in the war, you should be getting plenty of IJA infantry units with meagre TOE's that are ideally suited for sitting in defensive terrain and behind forts that will let your tank units be freed up for use in the strategic reserve.

The Allies got a 1:2 result and had a lot of vehicles destroyed, but both 1st Tank Div and 20th Infantry Div were zeroed in this battle after being flipped out of Reserve mode.
1st Tank Div has nearly moved out of the hex so will escape tomorrow before being attacked again.

The Allies are showing no signs of movement in any other hex along the frontier.
I have just ordered one unit from each stack along the entire front line to move backwards to create the impression of a general withdrawal.
I would like the Allies to advance towards Imphal so I can inflict more casualties on them as they advance, but they might not oblige.

First time I’ve tried low layered CAP and the combat report says that this raid was a 3:5 trade.
I’ll take that ratio compared to the 1:9+ drubbings of previous days.

2:4 loss reported in the second raid, but I saw more P47s destroyed than 2 in the animation.
The action for the second raid started with Franks getting the dive, which is very interesting considering the sweep came in at 42k’ but the CAP was set a 9/7/5/3k’ with 1x Sentai at each layer.

Raid 3 was a 1:4 loss, with dives from both sides. I think I will persist with this to try and wear down the P47s in a battle of attrition and see how long they stick it out.

Raid 4 cleared out a single Frank and Raid 5 swept empty skies.

This feels like a big victory after recent air battles!
37x P47s lost to all causes for the cost of 35 Frank-Rs. There are 1376 Frank-Rs in the pool with 16 being built per day.
Total pilot losses were 18x KIA, 12xWIA so the pilot pipeline will be the limiting factor. There are still a few hundred 70+ experience IJAAF fighter pilots in reserve so I’ll commit them while I can achieve odds like this.
There were 4x Sentai in this layered CAP. I might add one or two more to try and match the # of Sentai in the layer-cake to the number of sweeps that came in.
Will the Allies try to sweep Magwe again tomorrow or will they try to hit a different base?
They might try to target where the LRCAP is coming from, or might switch back to the 15th Army hex, but it doesn’t have a radar so I don’t want to try layered CAP without a radar underneath.
I might just need to be patient and setup a 5-6x layer CAP/LRCAP over a base and wait until the Allies choose to sweep it.

Cox's Bazar has a radar, so when the Allies arrive there that will be a good opportunity for another big LRCAP setup.

Overall, I think your VP situation looks quite reasonable - if (and it's a big if) you can effect a withdrawal from Burma without getting those units cut off.

Thinking longer term for Burma, I do wonder if you would be better off seriously shortening the frontline in the face of the '44 Allied OOB here. A concentration around Rangoon, plus blocking forces at Paoshan and on the flanks into Thailand seems a much safer bet to my mind, as I think you can't hope to hold the Central Burma plains at this point in time.

I don't think you can defend forward in Burma at this point in the war, so I think it's worth evaluating what the overall goal here is - to my mind the real prize in Burma for the Allies is Rangoon - Akyab and Ramree can't provide anything close to the supply throughput as Rangoon, so a refocused defence around shorter lines here seems a good idea. That said, keep in mind that a landing in the panhandle is always an option!

On your tank units, I think Burma might no longer be the most suitable front for them. To my mind, at this point in the war they belong sitting as a QRF force ready to respond to the next Allied invasion, rather than as line units.

At this point in the war, you should be getting plenty of IJA infantry units with meagre TOE's that are ideally suited for sitting in defensive terrain and behind forts that will let your tank units be freed up for use in the strategic reserve.

I might not get a turn back today due to new years related socialising, so will try to prepare future operations plans for the defence of Burma and the Philippines.

Burma first: Current friendly situation from right to left flank.

The "INA Division" of 4x Regts are on the far right flank and will withdraw from Ledo towards Warazup/Myitkyina.

In the centre, there are 10x IJA Infantry Divisions +2x Tank Divisions in the Imphal Sector.

The Arakan Sector on the left is where all of the action is on the ground at the moment. 4x Infantry Divisions will soon be routed next to Cox's Bazar. 1st Tank Div and 2x Infantry Divs are at Cox's Bazar. 2x Infantry Divs are further back at Akyab plus 6th Div dug in and fully recovered to 100% TOE one hex inland. Of note, 6th Div is receiving replacements from Rangoon, whereas troops further away from Rangoon must be too far to receive them. 33rd Div is defending Ramree Island and 36th Div is about to move back to Prome after recovering at Rangoon (currently 96% TOE). In total that makes 11x Infantry Divs +1x Tank Div, but some are heavily disabled.

In reserve, along the central Burma railway there are 7x IJA Infantry Divs: 52nd and 57th Divs are at Rangoon, 39th Div at Pegu, 31st Div at Moulmein, 56th Div at Magwe, 58th and 59th Divs are split into thirds to cover 6x bases. 5th, 8th and 9th Ind. Mixed Bdes are covering the North Burma bases. 1st, 2nd and 3rd IM Bdes are covering the bases from Kunming to Paoshan. The RTA 2nd and Cav Divs are also split into thirds to add to 6x bases, but they are due to withdraw in 58 days (around 1 Aug 44).

Further away along the South Burma Coast Tavoy has 32nd Div, Mergui has 38th Div (recently arrived from Ambon) and Victoria Point has 37th Div.
30th Div is at Bangkok. These troops are intended to delay any Allied attempt to bypass Burma until reinforcements can arrive.
There are 5x 20s Divs in Malaya which could move quickly by rail to Bangkok if required.

The "Sasebo SNLF Div" of 5x SNLF units is defending Port Blair.

Some other rumination from me on looking at your Luzon screenshot from past experience. My mindset when defending the PI is that Luzon is the ultimate goal, and everything needs to be geared towards making it as time consuming a campaign as possible.

- Manila is only at forts six? That base is a prime candidate for Forts 9 in my view, simply because it offers the Allies the only realistic chance at a sizeable repair shipyard west of Pearl Harbour that can be largely immune from IJ bombing raids. If you stick the Wake CD unit at Bataan, and a hefty garrison at Clark, you can make that campaign a real slog for the Allies.

- Cabanatuan might be worth some effort to develop into a mid-size airbase. Granted, the terrain is clear but it is inland and on the rail network, so provides a nice supplement to Manila and Clark.

- The two island bases SW of Bataan (Lubang and Calpan) are worth developing as medium airbases. They're reasonable terrain, and you can be sneaky and keep them running with barge/fast transport traffic out of Manila Bay, and if the Allies go for the traditional South-North approach then they'll help you keep Manila viable for a bit longer, and once Luzon is in play, it becomes an exercise in supply stockpiles.

This is the current plan for defence of the Philippines.
Manila is on the way to level 9 forts, currently approaching level 7.
3x JAAF Bns arrive in 4 days that will move to Luzon to help build airfields and forts.

The IJN are providing the garrisons for Mindanao and the Central Philippine Islands, with the 10s Naval Guards, SNLF Coys and IJNAF Coys scattered around. Those IJN bases will provide support for search assets and fighters set to LRCAP, plus emergency landing fields if required.
HQ 2nd Air Fleet arrives in 11 days and will move to Manila.

1:1 result thanks to the terrain, but casualties are increasing for the IJA.
This force won’t have enough time to march out of the hex so they will take more losses when they are kicked out…
The next battle should to be in the hex with the #1 as the Allies should be able to get there before the IJA has a chance to move across the jungle tracks to join 6th Div at the #2. The IJA will try to buy a few days by forcing the Allies to attack Cox’s Bazar and then again at #1.

15th Army was pushed back to Cox’s Bazar taking heavy casualties to 4x Infantry Divisions.
I won’t buy out any of the disabled Divs yet as they are likely to be routed once more before joining 6th Div, making them even cheaper.

A very large LRCAP (layered low) is set over Cox’s Bazar tomorrow In anticipation of the Allies going after the retreating ground units there.
The Allied CIC noted the “action in Burma” so I assume he has noticed the all-hex withdrawal indicators in the Imphal area, but no other Allied advances have been spotted yet.

The 2x INA Regts lost Ledo today, but they exceeded expectations by defending against 3-4 attacks.
They withdrew towards Burma this time so will move towards their next assignment: garrison duty in Thailand.

28th Sentai converting to size 27 from 9 – this is a recon Sentai that was long overdue a resize. It had been operating from North Burma in thirds, so when I finally noticed I moved it back to Rangoon to resize.
