i have similar feeling about PTs and it was recently discussed in my AAR too
when I see PTs it is bad day ....

i'd like to see that during rain / thunderstorm they can't be undocked and they don't fight
if sb wants all weather naval protection - use bigger vessels

So... How do you feel the in-game / in-real life comparaison stands if you compare Jap barges and Allied PTs ?

One important fact to uncover would be the number of major warships ( DD and above) hit by PT boats, in the Pacific, in the real war.

I've had numerous CL/DD flotillas, led by Raizo, get decimated by PTs ... in fact I've never really found a cost effective counter to them ... they even seem to be able to shoot down strafing planes at a rate that exceeds the strafing planes ability to sink them.

So are they too effective in the game? Well if we had the real life data, we could compare to examples of in game data and answer that question. But without the data, we're just guessing.

Here's a list of USN PT's lost in the Pacific. About 2/3's are non-op or friendly fire losses. Six PT's are lost to IJN surface units, one PT damaged and subsequently lost. Thus the IJN was either highly ineffective at sinking PT's, or the two rarely tango'ed.

I'm in Haugesund this weekend, got time for one turn thus far! Busy summer
days with lots of football on the box as well [;)]

PT boat always arouse nasty feelings among Jap players. Andy boasts about his
newer models being as powerful as Jap destroyers with 4 torpedoes, 57, 40 and
20 mm guns [:(] These creeps are still only worth 1 points I'm afraid....

Would be happy to exchange 5000 barges for 500 PT boats [;)]
Nice list Timtom - my conclusion: It should be possible for PT boats to run aground in WitP [:D]

Tanaka never died in combat, he simply dissappeared a year ago [:(]

I've evacuated 2 good regiments from the small atolls west in the Marshalls. Will ask Andy
for permission to run a convoy to Jaluit to pick up most of the 55th Div that got teleported there...#¤#"@&%¤!
Air transports have picked up the bulk of the 12th Div from Wewak and I now got really strong troop
concentrations in the Palaus. Will move parts of these to the Marianas together with reinforcements from
Northern Japan. Running around the clock mining operations in the area as well.

Not sure were I should place my fleet - Davao isn't secure and both the Palaus/Marianas are within enemy heavy
bomber range. Suggestions?

Think I should develop plans to counter Andy's next moves. Not sure when it will come. He needs to secure his
foothold north of New Guinea and then it will be almost mid 44. Hopefully this gives me another 2 months.

PzB, really no chance to challenge Wasile in anyway? Even by land?
Are the forces there really that strong? Are you troops so scattered already you can't afford a Kavieng bis over there?
 
Me thinks Andy will do his best to keep Wasile, thus using ressources there instead of somewhere else. This place looks really way to important to him, and if you can exhaust the troops there, he may dislike it...

Unfortunately, no... Wasile is off limits. Some 30-40k enemy troops there and Andy can bring in more by
air. Imagine what would happen if I sent 60k troops and my entire fleet there. His carriers would sink the lot.

Wasile is pretty isoloated - look at the map! It's surrounded by major Japanese bases. So I'll await Andy's move.
If he wants to invade the DEI/PI from Wasile he will have to clear out more bases in Northern New Guinea first.
Same applies if he wants to invade the Palaus. Satwal and Woleai are also likely targets before this can be accomplished.
A move on the Marianas can be mounted from the Marshalls - without much forewarning. Need to place recon subs
in this area.

I will try to increase the number of assault points in the Palaus/Marianas to ca 1000 over the next 1-2 months. A full Division
from Northern Japan is already loading. 1 regiment has been evacuated from Ponape and a crack Bde will be released
from China in a few weeks. An engineer regiment will be picked up from New Guinea and reserves will be distributed from
Ulithi.

I'm moving my fleet back from Davao: I'm actually placing it in Naha near Okinava. From here it can sortie towards
the PI, DEI, Palaus/Marianas in no time. They're also out of Andy's recon/bomber range.

The issue is were to place my air fleet. The logical solution would be in the Philippines! Not sure I should place them in
the forward bases as these are now within range of enemy heavy bombers.

From now on I will play it safe with the exception of hit and run strikes: planning another carrier sortie.
600 Zekes are now being produced pr month and there are 200 in the pools. Everything is a-ok production wise [8D]

11 days until the next fleet carrier arrives.

Wasile

Spent quite some time on re-organizing this turn. Industry, troops, fleets, aircraft etc!

Moving supplies and fuel to the forward bases, trying to stockpile as much as possible while I still can.
Supply situation is quite good really, but I found 7-8 smaller bases with very little supply.

A crack Engineer Regiment has been airlifted from New Guinea and will be shipped to its new destination together
with a regiment from China. At Yap the 12th Division has also been airlifted from New Guinea and will become the main defensive element
on this atoll. A Bde from Ulithi will be moved to Guam while a crack Bde from China will go to Pagan. The
Northern Force Division from Sapporo will reinforce Saipan and Tinian. Yet another Bde from Sapporo will be moved to Marcus Island.

Future reinforcements will be moved to Iwo and Bonin Islands. Formosa and Okinawa and the PI are scheduled to receive sizeable
reinforcements over the next weeks.

This is the last major 'troop shuffle' before Andy will make his move. Reserves will be moved from non-targetted bases, can't afford
to keep 2-3 Div's in a single place in order to use them as a strategic reserve. Too difficult and dangerous to move them when the enemy
got supremacy of the seas with their massed carrier forces.

Btw. Don't worry about the headliens for the posts. I only use titles like 'Strike on Sarmi' when

Strike Force I

I am organizing two Carrier Strike Forces.

Strike Force I
Carrier Hiyo and 2 light carriers, ca 100 ac.
Will be accompanied by a Tanker Replenishment TF.

Strike Force II
Based around 2 escort carriers and a seaplane tender, ca 85 ac.
Will be escorted by 4 of the new Matsu class destroyers with long endurance
and high AA ratings.

Not sure were or when to dispatch these Strike Forces, but they will be used for
harassment and commerce raiding.

In the meantime the KB will slowly be put back into fighting shape!

Relatively quiet.

Took a look at the IJA and IJN Air Forces: They got a grand total of 7300 ac in their lists.
Some 3300 of these are fighters. 1. Zekes, Oscars and Tojo/Tonys. The Jack and George are becoming more
numerous. In a week the excellent 'Grace' torpedo bomber goes into production - hopefully the 'Frank' will also
be accelerated another 1-2 months.

Not sure how many troops I should leave in New Guinea. Without supplies the troops will whither on the wine, so
I think it's wise to pull out as many as possible!?

Enemy Tf spotted heading NW past Timor!?
Thought it could be a carrier strike force, but I need more recon....

This turn was more exciting!
The TF that was spotted of Timor yesterday materialized into 3 TF's - 2 transport and one surface group.
A third carrier group was spotted 2-3 hexes south of these groups.

Enemy raids hit Namlea, a small size 1/1 base of Ambonia. Andy want's another easy target that he can
convert into a forward size 4 AF.

I had put a few bombers on naval attack to test the enemy defenses - most of these slipped through a weak
Spit CAP and hurt a destroyer. If more bombers had been available several capital ships would have been
hit. Unfortunately it's impossible to know when Andy makes a mistake and when there is an Uber CAP in
place that will shoot down 99.5% of all attacking ac [8|]

Could he going for Kendari? That would seem pretty risky. I'd bet he's set a waypoint where he can then scoot to either Dili or Amboina. He could have LBA cover at Amboina.

Is Tawi Tawi not built up enough to be a fleet base?

Andy is either going for Namlea or Ambonia. Only bombed the former....
Tawi Tawi has not been built, went for Davao instead. Both are too close to Wasile
to be of any use anyway.

Kendari and Ambonia got 9 forts, Andy doesn't like that. So my 2c on Namlea [;)]

As predicted - Namlea was invaded today!

I had a regiment prepped to 100 for Namlea partially airlifted in. The problem
is that all the bombardments have vaporized ALL supplies at Namlea. Troops without
supplies is pretty useless really and since supplies can't be stored in bomb shelters.....

It's pretty clear that Namlea is a side show. Carriers Formidable, Hornet and some CVE's
have been spotted as well as the old battleship Idaho. Andy is constantly picking out the
bases that got the least number of defending troops and bypassing everything else. His
recon ac must be providing him with very accurate information.

The defense I found appropriate for Namlea consisted was relatively moderate for several reasons.
Firstly, I didn't want to expend large amounts of resources against a sideshow like Namlea. Potential gains would
not be worth the potential costs. Take a look at the concentration of enemy ac at Wasile (screenie).

Still I ordered 40 Zekes, 80 Oscars, 30 fighter bombers, 70 naval bombers and 30 Sallys to attempt to hit the enemy fleet.
I had my doubts since the weather was rainy, but this could work both ways.

Ambonia was rained out in the AM turn and only the Oscars and fighter bombers took of from Menando. All Oscars were
lost and the FB's turned back. (Andy sailed his carriers into the target hex again). The strike could have achieved results
if the 70 naval bombers came along, but most likely it was just as well they didn't.

In the PM turn Namlea was covered in bas weather together with Menando, and the Ambonia strike force hit enemy ships
at Wasile, suffering more causalties with little to show for it.

The enemy didn't loose a single ac in A2A or to flak - we lost 80 Oscars as well as 20-30 transports and 20-30 Sallys and FBs.
It's plainly too difficult to coordinate strikes from more than one base with numerous enemy targets and very unstable weather.
