I guess the point is: My advice is forget trying to micromanage those HRs. No altitude HRs, no bombing HRs, no mission settings HRs. None. (Not talking about turn 1-specific stuff.)

Some planes at some points in the game can beat the snot out of some other planes. The mix changes as the game goes on. That's how it is.

The same is true with bombing missions. If a player takes the time to get some 4EB crews highly trained in naval attack, then good on him. Against hard targets like warships he will pay a price to flak, against soft targets like merchants much less of a price. Same versus troops; soft targets at low altitude cost less than hard targets with better AA available. No need to HR it.

Just use the settings the best you can. Many of the assertions that the rationale for many, many HRs are built on are either false or far less than certain. Unintended consequences are many. Angst is massive. Repeat: Angst is massive. Forget all that and play with minimal HRs (or, as some like, none at all).

As far as LRCAP supporting bombers, I just have trouble believing that it's terribly effective at that (see LoBaron's comments). It's just one game mechanism to get fighter planes in a particular area, and it has costs associated with it. Frankly, I hardly bother with (just here and there).

I've been on the receiving end of it and it still leaves a sour taste in my mouth. [:D]

I believe the issue is the 'dive' and not the LRCAP itself. If bombers are at 10k, how effective is a CAP against the bombers if set to 30k? Lower the CAP to say 15k to get to the bombers and the enemy sets LRCAP at 20k, what happens? The CAP is bounced for as long as the LRCAP can interdict. That is the issue with LRCAP set to coincide with bombing missions. It provides an escort capability but in the form of a much more effective sweep and often getting the bounce.

However, I now believe the solution is set a high CAP to deal with the LRCAP, or even set high altitude LRCAP over your own defensive CAP to deal with it. LRCAP is wonky anyway, often engaging beyond set ranges and or diverted away from player input to protect a particular base or what not. Essentially there is little to no control over what LRCAP actually does during a turn. When bases are close together there is any combination of possibilities in how the AI will perform LRCAP missions and this kind of HR is no longer functional.

I don't believe Erik's issues are with the results. It's clear there was an understanding about LRCAP discussed when the game started. Jocke knowingly created a situation where it could become a problem and rather than giving Erik a heads up about it and discussing possible changes to, or dropping the LRCAP issue altogether, instead chose to risk a discussion or a wtf confrontation over this move after the fact. I think if it was brought up prior to finalizing the orders for this turn, neither Erik or Jocke would now be risking a falling out.

We all know at this stage of the game when forces are in close contact with one another LRCAP is needed, but also not very controllable. I'd suggest you both discuss doing away with this house rule at this stage of the game. Try to counter the use of escort LRCAP with LRCAP of your own to counter the height advantage. Jocke and I have the same gentlemen's agreement, or HR if you will, and I'll most likely suggest we eliminate it now from our game.

I attach no blame to either player here. The agreement about LRCAP was an effort to improve the feel of air combat for you both. I think at this point in the game it's now unworkable under current circumstances and for the sake of your game and relationship it's time to drop this particular HR.

No offence intended to you Erik or Jocke, and if I have caused any I apologize in advance. I don't follow Jocke's AAR so can't post the same comment there.

As a new player it's hard to realize this stuff. You haven't seen it play out over a few months let alone a whole game. Probably not many firs PBEMs make it to the finish line in 45, let alone one for whom it's the first PBEM for both players effectively. (I had one into 2/42 that ended before this began, this is Jocke's first). Your understanding grows immensely but the HRs don't grow with it.

I appreciate the advice and I'm starting to believe fewer is better. If I started now I would ask for very few HRs, probably, but I can envision playing with none as well.

I think you biggest stumbling block to expanding LI in '42 is simple: If you expand 1000 LI, you won't be able to expand 1000 ac/eng factories. Are you willing to trade off that? All that mid and late war R&D and engine expansion to get the bonus ... you won't have supply to do that. Are you willing to fight with Oscar/Nate instead of Tojo in '42? Are you willing to fight Tojo instead of Frank in '43?

Again, its simple numbers. There is a finite amount of supply and most players burn through all they have early and then need '42 to recover and are barely keeping even until about May 42. Now if you never have less than 1.5M supply in Tokyo from Dec 7, 41 through Jun42, then you are a candidate to consider building LI. If on the other hand, your supply in Tokyo drops to 500K or lower in Tokyo in that period, that means you will have to re-configure your ac/eng build plan and reduce it by 1000 factories.

I know that I would really struggle to find that 1M supply. But that's just me ... YMMV. [;)]

There's absolutely no way I have the spare supply to do this in my game with Bullwinkle. My supply numbers, while not dire, are scaring me. All of the factory repair that's going on consumes frightening levels of supply. I keep telling myself that it's almost over, the expansion is already starting to slow down... but it's still not uncommon for 15-20k supplies to be expended in a turn due to good R&D rolls in these initial weeks/month.

Sorry to stir up this hornet's nest in your AAR obvert. I made a little spreadsheet to calculate supply cost/production effects from building LI. I checked the bases in the Home Islands and there are 20 bases that have manpower <=5, LI and with no more than one other factory (armament, vehicle, engine or aircraft). I figure the Allied player wouldn't bother to bomb these factories with the intention of getting massive fires to destroy everything. There's probably not enough to warrant wasting valuable 4E bombers on them. Anyway, if each of these LI factories is increased by 50 starting on 7 Dec 41, they will be completely repaired in 50 days (25 Jan 42). At this point 1.1 million supply (thanks Spidery) would have been spent and 25,500 would have been recouped. On 3 Jan 45, the 1.1 million supply would be recouped. After that, you now have a positive cash flow of 1000 supply points per turn. At this point in the game, is it worth it?

I like these numbers, as well as the idea. I'm not beyond doing this in either of my games yet. If my opponent is pasting small centers with their LI, maybe an ARM or VEH factory also, then he's not pasting my HI, engine factories, etc.

Some other info to consider...

This is just based on the starting infrastructure in Honshu. Assuming sufficient resources and fuel, Honshu produces 567,750 supply per month. If the Allied player totally destroys Osaka and Tokyo (by far the two largest producers on the island), that monthly supply production drops to 150,750 a month. Would an extra 30,000 supply a month from the extra 1000 LI really matter at this point?

One thing I am going to do is to put massive air defenses in those cities. Not sure if it will matter though after reading this AAR. [:(]

You have some late. At Yokohama, Hiroshima and nagasaki I believe. Massive 12.7cm DP gun emplacements. I think 96 of them at Yokohama? [X(]

I have a lot of the 12cm upgraded rgts as well, and they do a pretty good job. Late war flak in beta is pretty good for both sides, really.

That's my advice.

As I mature as a player that will happen. Some people just reach that understanding sooner. I think most HR's are an effort to reduce the extreme results GG's design creates. Limit those extreme results from occurring too often and the need for HR's will be reduced dramatically, if not eliminated outright.

I think it depends on how you choose to play Japan. I've played two low aggression Allied players that do little in 1942. Combine that with a historic perimeter and I definitely have the supply to invest in LI. There is also the fact that captured supply can be factored into the cost for expanding LI which no one has mentioned yet. When I advocate some form of LI expansion it's not meant to be a solution. I get Japan's economy and production will fail, I'm just trying to figure out a way to make it last as long as possible.

In my game with Jocke, I've reached Oct. 25/42. I have 1.5 million supply in Japan and it's increasing 10-20k/day even with 894 R&D points still to repair. I've increased LI modestly in a few bases to supplement my supply generating capacity. If I play another game as Japan I'd like to try upwards of a 1000 point increase in supply production to see if it's feasible. I just plan on paying for it any number of ways and through prudent production choices.

I've said all along that if you plan on playing an aggressive Japan that increasing LI is not a good decision. Play a conservative Japan with prudent economic choices against a conservative Allied player and I think the idea has great potential. You can make a lot of hay in a quiet 42 as Japan.

Anyway, I guess I'll just wait to see if I play another game as Japan to finally put this to the test.

After a few more emails I sent the turn back. I think we're on the right page again. Thanks for all of the comments. Talking face to face these issues would not arise in the same way, and the internet/email tends to magnify differences in understanding and interpretation. We're both competitive to a very high level, and as Francois has sometimes mentioned, this is a mature man's game. We're still young bucks and sometimes our antlers get in a tangle.

So here is the update on the actual turn in question. As I said, I have no problem with the result, we did about as well as can be expected at this stage, and even had a few lucky breaks or it could have been much worse. It's an all-out Allied hammer on Luzon, and I fear it's only day one.

After the turn another ~250 HI is burnt and the fires still rage at 19k! He does lose 12-15 B-29s. My NF are decimated, with only half of the remaining able to fly, about 30.

Massive air strikes hit Manila after not one but two naval bombardments, one with the Iowas, all four (!!!), shut down Clark. Our CAP does wonders for the number there. Although we get to the bombers our planes are crushed both in the air and on the ground throughout the turn as escorts LR CAP, bleed or something is with every bomber package. Luckily I diversified and spread CAP all over in the past months, as the supporting planes from other bases were able to slow the tide and Manila should be open, but crippled, tomorrow.

Almost all of the sweeps came late. Very lucky there.

Not much I could do for tomorrow. I staged some fighters to other bases on the rail, got some to Manila which should be open with 66 field damage and 600 engineers, and got down on my knees to pray for a cloudy day on the 21st!

An indirect effect is that it will cost more Fuel to get those Resources to the HI, but in turning around the initial (and very large) deficit in the HI, I always end up with massive surpluses of Resources. I'm 50-some days into my game with Bullwinkle and have been holding steady on Resources in the HI for the past 20 turns, and I can't even get to the stockpiles in Malaya/Sumatra yet. They are never the constraint.

So the consideration is...

Do you need that 1100 supply in the next 1100 days, for other things? Will it slow down your R&D expansion? Will it slow down your initial expansion in early '42?

If the answer to all of those questions is (an emphatic) "no", then I have only one-and-a-half qualms about LI expansion: will I get to use it 1100 days from now (the game won't already be over via Allied auto-vic)? Will it even make a difference?

Quick easy question for you - what Night Fighters are you using ?

I have a lot of thoughts on NF at this point, mostly what I should have done. Basically, build them all, build as many as you can get, and change every group that can change into NF, including some recon and some FB groups, into NF.

Currently I'm using the Irving J1N1-Sa, the Dinah III KAI and the A6M5d-S. I'm trying to get a few of the Nick Ki-45d KAI because two groups only upgrade to that plane. I've got the Randy NF researching, which looks like the best of the bunch. I just am getting enough of the P1Y1-S to try them.

The Dinah gets torched in bunches probably because it always can catch the B-29s, ironically, the A6M NF is a bit fragile but packs a punch and does climb better, and the Irving NF is slow, gets left behind and times but with the radar seems to get more hits than the others.

When I have a few minutes I'll go through all of the groups that are potential NF and show which airframes you'd need for them.

My production of NF is as follows. I'm consistently at abut 50% filled in my groups now that strikes are twice a week. I'd say get a pool of these in 44.

Very interesting comment, Lemon. Something new to ponder. My eye keeps going back to that huge excess of resources and makes me think of LI...

I still don't think expanding HI in the Home Islands is an optimal solution, but some combination of the others will definitely make an impact. I am definitely interested in trying this next game.

That was maybe about half the total. Jocke has always tried to use the big hammer with the 4Es, but especially right now. His entire system is based on sweeps and rarely even uses escorts. They aren't needed usually as a few days of 200-300 top fighters sweeping will pretty much render useless anything I'm trying to put on CAP. In this case it was the previous naval bombardments the put a dent in the Cap before the sweeps and bombing runs came in that tipped the balance.

All of my fighter groups are recovering on Formosa, in China or in the HI. So there is really no need to do anything but bomb away. A lot of planes still going down to flak though.

[font="Microsoft Sans Serif"]SUBS: [/font] None of the minis do anything but get crushed at Bataan in spite of a lot of ships coming through.

[font="Microsoft Sans Serif"]STRAT BOMBING:[/font] Still burning, but only about 380 fires now. The damage has been significant. Screenshot below. I can't rebuild anything here, so the engines are also going to hurt eventually.

[font="Microsoft Sans Serif"]CHINA/INDOCHINA: [/font] Troops move out of Saigon toward Cam Ran Bay. I'd like to make that the final stand in Indochina. It's also close enough to potentially take troops out elsewhere. Only one of the Bangkok divisions is left in Indochina, and some of it was flown out. I'd like to get all I can of the big units out. All air groups are out and he's not bombing here while focusing on Manila.

In China I'm thinning of where to place the bulk of troops. About 3-3.5k AV will try to slow the land advance near Nanning while other divisions fill in at Hong Kong and along the coast to the NE. Somehow a large chunk of supply has simply gone from Formosa. Must be from filling out air groups and troops. It went from 30k about a week ago to 15k at Taihoku. Grrrrrr. Only building forts still at Taichu.

[font="Microsoft Sans Serif"]LUZON: [/font] The Allied 4Es keep up the pressure, but take a hit from flak as well. About 20 plus some 2E taken out. Many more damaged. On the next day the 2Es take over and lose another 10 planes to flak. The troops are not suffering yet but supply is dwindling and the naval bombardments will continue I'm sure. Happily the Richelieu hit a mine! He's also losing a lot of DMS here it seems. Not sure how many of those the Allies have now, but maybe if I can get some mines to the next possible targets en masse then it'll be likely they could have an effect again.

The performance of flak is confusing to me. With the bigger concentrations of planes the percentage lost to flak is very small. With the smaller packages the hits seem much more frequent. I would imagine it should be the other way around. It's not like the main body of planes is over the target simultaneously and the flak has to spread around to hit them, but this seems to be how it is modeled. With the smaller groups it seems like all of the flak comes to bear on them at once. Almost every smaller group of 3-6 planes loses a plane to flak. No complaints here, but it must be frustrating for Jocke.
