Poldark Series 3 is hotting up nicely. Poor Morwenna has finally married the hideous Reverend Whitworth who is about to show his true colours.... lumme!

I remember watching Poldark in the 70's and was one of my favourite series at the time. Usually the remakes are worse than the originals. How is this versus the original one?

I watched the original too, although given the length of time, I cannot remember too much about it. I remember enjoying it at the time though. I would say that if the original was better than this production then it would have been extremely good because this new version is excellent [:)].

Great to have GoT back! [:)] The first episode was minus the usual violence (although the opening scene was good for getting the series 7 body count up and running) However there were no beeeewwbs and too much of the extreme language. They are obviously using that less sparingly this time around and there's no real need for that imo. Clegane's character continues to evolve - his sorrow when coming across the father and daughter he'd met previously (series 5 or 6?) was touching - and I actually find myself rooting for the guy [X(]

The show is just setting us up to kill him in heartbreaking fashion. [:D]

I actually find myself rooting for most of the people in the show, with a few exceptions (Bolton, Jeoffrey etc), I even have some sympathy for Cersei tbh.

Cersei isn't a bad weather girl, but her forecasts always seem to be the same: cold with a chance of Snow over the Wall ... cloudy with a chance of rain in the North ... Winter is Coming ...

Indeed - one of the many strengths of the program is that people are people and - with a few exceptions like those you named - characters are not all good or all bad. So yes, we have the pantomine villains like Joffrey and Ramsey, but in the main the characters are more nuanced - even the good ones have their faults and the bad ones have their positives. I actually like the characters of Cersei and Jaime [:)]

Wheeler Dealers. Will check out the new season, but without Edd China, doubt it will be worth it.

Cersei was my favourite in the books. Looking from outside, she was like stark raving mad, but always when reading through her POV it all made perfect sense [:)]

I have a great idea for the Dr. Who Christmas special. He tries to stop a war between a race of misunderstood cold loving skeletal creatures and some bloodthirsty hot blooded nobles with swords and dragons. To assist the Dr's regeneration, there is a young woman with unique identity shifting skills...oh wait, she's already been on Dr. Who.
Well, there is this other young woman named Clara...

One person he might want to avoid...don't these 2 have a lot in common?

Started watching Shogun from 1980 with the kids. Really enjoying it. Top notch mini-series from back in the day. [8D]

Dunkirk – Spoiler Alert

I have just got back from seeing the film. What can I say? It was intense and lived up to the hype.

The film has no frills, no character development, no backstory, there is no love interest and indeed there is very little dialogue. It’s simply a story of essentially four small groups of people – one from the Army, RN/Army officers on the Dunkirk mole, a Royal Air Force fighter patrol and men aboard one of the little ships. I guess the Royal Navy is a fifth group as they are naturally pretty much ever present, invariably adding something to each of the stories – largely as a result of their ships getting sunk having repeatedly put themselves in harm’s way to try and get the Army home.

One immediate thing I noticed was at the very start when a few lines were used to explain what was happening; it was not the Germans attacking and surrounding the French and British – it was ‘the enemy’. Okay…. that seems a little silly but I guess we are all friends now so….

I was a little confused near the start as one minute it was daytime and the next it was dark or heading that way. However, it quickly became apparent that the action is not strictly chronological. By the way this way of telling the story makes it look like the RAF patrol shoots down half the Luftwaffe, but one sees some of the scenes more than once from different viewpoints. This jumbled timeline idea actually works well.

The film doesn’t seek to tell the story of Dunkirk. The French are acknowledged - holding the perimeter along with a British rear-guard. Amongst the limited dialogue, there is reference to the German tanks being halted, the Luftwaffe being given the job of destroying the BEF and their French Allies, expectation that 30-45,000 British troops only are expected to be rescued, and that the RAF are trying to conserve aircraft and pilots for the battle still to come. But enough of the story is told through the trials and tribulations of the individual groups and the brief dialogue to make clear what is going on even if one knows nothing about this episode in history.

I was expecting some sort of soundtrack what with Hans Zimmer being involved but instead, during the action, there was a sort of noise as opposed to a dramatic music score. This worked really well too and added to the intensity.

How did the film fare on the trembling bottom lip front? Well there were a couple of occasions on which it was a good job I had the Kleenex on hand – I wasn’t emotional you understand, I just had something in my eye….

In summary – a great job Mr Nolan!

Recent discussion about the English civil war called The Anarchy made me think it was time to re-watch The Pillars of the Earth that has The Anarchy as a backdrop. Maybe even re-reading the book. Although the book I already re-read several times.

And I need to figure out how to watch the follow up series World Without End.

My browser if Firefox and I download documentaries from youtube..Very many.
I also use a file sharing app called winmx which allows trading of files from all around the world.
It gives me access to historical movies and documentaries from all over and the community has many folk who interpret those files when other languages are needed.

Watched a documentary Dunkirk: The New Evidence which was quite interesting and makes the case that the RAF role in the Dunkirk evacuation has been entirely misunderstood and wrongly downplayed.

It argues that the reason the troops would have seen little of the RAF from the beaches was that many of the air battles were either taking place out to sea or further inland. The documentary suggests that the RAF (with some French air force support and AA fire from land and the ships) caused more losses to the Luftwaffe than was meted out. Adolf Galland and Albert Kesselring make similar comments (the former not in this documentary).

Interesting stuff.

The Imitation Game, watched it for the first time over the weekend, and tbh i was impressed and also surprised by how backwards we were back then and to a point how we still are today in many points in life, while i normally go for more action or pure war, this for me was very well done and reminded me somewhat of the other good film, The Man Who Knew Infinity again which tells a true story and again what tells us how backwards we used to be as a nation and again up to a point how some of us still are today in the UK [:(]

would recommend both films to anyone who goes for truth and story over either fun or action

Another cracking episode last night (although sadly we lost a key character) - and I see they've announced a 4th Series has been commissioned. Excellent news!
