Dan, it is time to seek terms. Both players will benefit. Well done, sir.

Perhaps someone might be willing to take on the game on Chez's behalf.........its a long shot but worth a try..........

Even assuming Steve wanted to withdarw, I think I'd rather just start a new game.  I've never like the idea of continuing an old game with a new player.  Other players do that enthusiastically, but the thought just leaves me cold.

Steve may jump at the chance to just play at a slower pace.  If so, I think I'll try to start a new game.  Not sure about that yet.

Second thoughts... I know you guys are top tier players, maybe Chez is in a similar situation as I, although on different sides. I have recalled at least 6 amphib Ops, in my case because of the KB appearing out of the deep blue at the most unopportune times, and the consequences must have Terry wondering what in h#ll I'm actually doing at Zulu HQ. The last two times this happened I had over 100 ships fleeing in every direction. It takes 10 days for me to get them all back together. Perhaps he is concentrating behind a front line trace you have yet to cross and he is merely pin pricking outside the perimeter. I flipped through the AAR again trying to note IJN capital ship losses and it did not appear to me he is without assets. Naaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaahh hes got a new girl friend and hes stalling.lol.

This game is one of two PBEMs that Chez is playing. My game with him is a year older, and we have reached July '43 in it so things are heating up for him. Add to that the fact that about six months ago he accepted a supervisory position at his job (he's an RN at a nursing home) and you realize that he has a lot of time demands on him. This last week he was short two stadff members and had to put in extra shifts himself to cover - and this is something that happens to him on a regular basis.

Th loss of 70+ Zeros at Toungoo is a huge error, but i have to say that I have had a similar oversight in one of my games (I think that it was an AI game, however). Sometimes you are so fixated on one area in the war that you overlook a significant threat in another area...

Plus we know all of your (lots of anyway) dispositions and plans.

Too much to expect a new player to come on board and pretend he didnt know these.

As an RN.  I salute Chez for covering the shifts to help his patients and staff.  Not many Nurse managers do that.  Nuring is a hard job, but when you add manager behind it, it gets even harder.  But that is the reason I play AE is to get my mind off of work and relax.  Sorry for the high jack CR.

Japanese Capital Ships:  KXIII put four torps into the already-stricken CA Furtaka, which slipped beneath the waves.  The IJN has lost to date:  10 CA, 4 BB, 2 CV, 3 CVL and possibly 1 CVE.  The attrition to the cruiser fleet is particularly important because it's left Steve with too few escorts for his carriers.

Battle of the Java Sea:  The Battle of the Java Sea, which promises to last for months, opened about two weeks ago with the Kirishima TF savanging a transport TF at Ketapang, sinking 10 merchantment and two small ASW ships.  Then, a sub put two TT into BC Repulse.  The destruction of Furutaka evens the score.  Billiton Island airfield goes to level five tomorrow; Toboali is at two; and more engineers have come ashore at Ketapang and Pontianak.  I think Allied forward progress will slow as Japan is now making a strong commitment, but I also think Japan no longer has a chance to reclaim any of the major bases in the Java Sea and on the rim.  The Sea has been divided and the Allies have the bases necessary to expand to the north, east and west.

Burma:  Some Japanese units are moving forward belatedly from Rangoon.  The Allied forces south and east of Magwe are not terribly strong, but I think they are strong enough to deal with whatever Japan currently has in theater, especially by using jungle terrain to enhance the defense.

China:  The Chinese stack was set to attack near Nanyang, but the Japanese retired before they could do so.

NoPac:  Two artillery regiments landed at Para with additional supply.  No enemy opposition yet.  More engineers are on the way - an important convoy that will arrive in about a week.

Peace Feeler:  I asked Steve if he was interested in dialing back (slowing) the game due to his work schedule and pressures.  He declined and didn't even hint at anything more permanent.  So I'll leave it there for now.  I still think my original thought - that we'll know where we stand by the end of 1942 - is accurate (I had bumped that up to November 1 when things were so quiet so long, but they aren't as quiet right now).  With troops pouring into Sumatra and then streaming to the forward bases, and with so many ships and aircraft available, the Allied position is growing very fast now.  By the end of the year the Allies will have big airfields on Borneo, in the Java Sea, and just a few hexes from Singapore.  Then will begin hitting port facilities in a major way.

More battles like the one above have to get him thinking about the futility of continuing. Although, the more ships he loses the fewer he has to fuel up! [:D]

If he continues to want to play would you at some point possibly stop altogether if the game is on the same track, or will you continue on at a slower pace and begin another, as you've hinted at?

Obvert:  Good question.  This pace is very good for me from a work productivity standpoint.  I am much better off playing one turn a day than tempting myself with multiple turns.  But I suspect I will be tempted to start a new game as soon as I feel like it's too late for Japan to even pull an inside straight in this game.  If I do start a new game I probably will try to cajole one of the elite-level players into taking me on.  If I'm unable to do so, I might suck it up and play as Japan against somebody who doesn't have much experience with the Allies.  I would prefer the former, but I would also lose a great deal of sleep if such a game got underway.

DEI:  Very quiet, which is always good for the Allies as they continue to press supply and reinforcements forward to the bases in and on the Java Sea.  Steve's going to re-employ the KB near Kuching, I'm sure.  Billiton Island just went to level five, so I moved in an experienced USAAF fighter squadron that just upgraded from P-39 to P-38G.  I also moved forward a small Marine F4F squadron from Toboali to Pontianak.  In less than a week Ketapang field should reach level one, which will help me immensely.  Lots of Allied combat ships damaged in the recent engagement are retiring to Colombo, as are most of the Allied carriers (many of which need to upgrade aircraft squadrons, and all of them are due for ship upgrades).  I love the Allied deployment and potential in the DEI.  This is where I'm deriving all my satisfaction at the moment.

Burma:  The Allies will press forward from Toungoo to see if Japan withdraws (indicating system weakeness in the Japanese defenses even at Rangoon and Pegu) or stands (indicating strength there).  At this piont, though, the Allies are happy to maintain Happy Stalemates at Magwe and Toungoo, knowing that once Singapore is cut off, Burma will be also.

China:  The Chinese stack, with some reinforcement, is now ready to move forward again and reengage the IJA stack should it fail to retire into the main IJ defensive line at Chengchow.

NoPac:  Para has 30k supply and a small supply convoy will begin unloading at Onne tonight.  More importantly, a big transport TF with engineers arrives at Para tonight.  A strong CL/DD force is posted to provide protection.  I'm prepared to take losses, but I would rather them not occur next turn.

The Pacific:  I foresee nothing of importance happening here although the Allies will continue to build the bases at Milne Bay and Ndeni.

As a long term AFB I'm currently playing a PBEM of the Guadalcanal scenario as the Japanese before we start a proper campaign. It would be very interesting to see how you cope with playing as the other side. Given that you don't really enjoy the pilot training side of things, do you think you could get a handle on the huge amount of work needed to keep the economy going? I know it's my biggest fear and, even given some of the very instructive AARs that are around, I'm not even sure where I would start with it.

Having said that, the Japanese have some very cool toys. Subs with aircraft! Brilliant! And destroyers that can carry supply have saved me on more than one occasion.

No.

Well, if you do choose to take that route, I think you would have more help than you would know what to do with on the economy, R n D and the other idiosyncrasies of the dark side. You'd most likely have an AAR that would be in position to vie for GJ's post count in no time!

You could try a 2X2 game with your partner handling the economy.

I am philosophically opposed to 2 x 2.  It's the same way I feel about breast reduction surgery.  It just shouldn't be done.

Actually I truly enjoyed my 2x2 game with the now absent Nomad. As an AFB, only having to deal with half the map is a blessing. I would have to beleive that playing as Japan would be a similar experince. I would suggest two day turns though as the extra time in moving files around can bog the game down with on day turns. You might enjoy it more than you think.

CR, you may like 2X2 more than you think, but whether you do that or not I just wanted to chime in that I'm 100% opposed to breast reduction. It's immoral and wrong, I tells ya! [:D]
