after being damaged yesterday, Sculpin attacks DD Yudachi that was out hunting the sub that was retiring North towards India. The sub even hits our DD but the torps failed to detonate and we were quite lucky here. In return the DDs achieve two near misses and the sub now shows up as heavily damaged. Two more ASW TFs will hunt the sub tomorrow...

Miller stated in his last email that he isn´t happy with the number of troops I´ve brought to Myitkina. Well, I nearly have three times of the enemy assault value but it´s a wooden hex, there are surely level 9 forts already and my supply level is critical. Makes an attack impossible. We have spotted several Burma bgds, an Indian TK rgt, a UK division! [X(], some base forces and several Chinese units. In total there are 16 enemy units dug in at Myitkina.

something is going on 9 hexes East of Baker. The Kingfisher sighting alerts me, unfortunately we didn´t really spot a big TF or any other sightings. My Betties, Nells and Zeroes are ready and I don´t know what will happen in this area. A direct assault on Baker would come surprising as this would mean that Miller would have a built up Canton in his flank with a lot of supply, a level 4 airfield and enough support to field a lot of Naval bombers.

The sun sets and Canton airfield launches it´s first strike on the spotted fleets some 300 miles off the atoll... unfortunately, the high experienced bomber crews fly unescorted into a deadly CAP of over 180 enemy fighters! [X(] There are again two Marine squadrons aboard the CVs and also British carriers seem to be in the hex... the morale of my bombers was high, so they all got shot down...

While our Zero escorts have a very hard stand against the high experienced Wildcat squadrons, the lower experienced Marine fighter squadrons aren´t really a match. Unfortunately our strike got bounced for a long time and our escorts really suffered. Nevertheless they really did an excellent job, enabling 31 high experienced torpedo bombers to break through the Cap to do their attack runs. During their attack runs the bomber pilots were amazed and surprised to see the enemy flak not being as strong as expected. In bold attacks from two directions, both American fleet carriers in this task force were targeted and the bombers achieved 5 torpedo hits causing fatal damage to the enemy carrier force! BANZAI! BANZAI! BANZAI!

The carriers are 28 hexes away from Pearl Harbour, it´s "only" 10 hexes to Palmyra, which Miller built up to level 4 port already. It will be a gamble and I expect to see at least one of the carriers to sink! If not, both will be out of the war for months and a possible threat of an American counterattack in the Central and South Pacific is gone for the next half year I guess!

Here are today´s air losses. Our Zero daitais got hit quite hard, the carrier based Wildcats achieved a 1,8:1 kill rate against our escorts. I´m sure that my main strike would have been completely annihilated if the Marine Buffalos would have been Navy Wildcats from other carriers (which aren´t available yet). With the Wildcats as only "real" Cap, my escorts enabled the bombers to get through.




I guess there´s no doubt that this force is heading to Canton Island. With two carriers out of the attack on the first day already, I wonder what Miller will do now? Turn back? Play it stubborn and send in his bombardment TFs and afterwards going in with the amphibious TFs? I would turn back. No, I wouldn´t even have attacked! After the loss of CV Enterprise near Wake he should have waited... just waited... Wasp is due to arrive within the next month I guess, then he would have at least 4 US carriers again. Even if he puts Marine fighter squadrons on his CVs to bring them to max strenght in aircraft, he must have seen at Wake that those Marine Buffalos are only cannon fodder and not a real match for the high experienced Zeroes.

If he pushes on then it will be again an all or nothing gamble. Nuke, or no nuke! Forts are at level 8 [:D] already and there is a big base force, a dedicate CD unit and an IJN base force. Alltogether, Canton Island is an atoll bristling with CD guns and also a strong garrison. In total we field over 480 assault points! With all his small TFs this will be a major blood bath if there are no nukes before the invasion. I also have set 36 Tina long range transports to fly in parts of a mixed regiment from Tarawa, this should bring the total assault value of the atoll to 500+ next turn.

What also is very interesting is the fact that there are British CVs and BBs in the Central Pacific now. With British and Indian troops operating in Burma, I wonder what Miller thinks I will do with the 7000 assault value I have available to being lifted somewhere on the map! I´m more than tempted to throw 6000 assault points at India as there can´t be much up there to defend the sub continent. Very careless, very careless. [:-]

I really have the feeling that Miller got overconfident after his easy victory at Midway. Everything worked perfectly for him there, even though that he made a couple of bad mistakes IMO. But like I´ve said, it´s uncertain that he will have that much luck again and today is already a big defeat with two of his fleet carriers heavily damaged.

first: a bad idea to use divebombers when you can expect a lot of flak. 10 SBDs were shot down by flak today, would be cool to see Japanese carriers popping up next turn, most of the enemy´s strike capability is gone for the next three turns. Second: Miller used three dozen Kingfishers to recon the atoll, coupled with the intel he gets from the dive bombers, he now knows where every single CD gun, machine gun, rifle, pistol and handgrenade is positioned. what a crappy joke. Those three divisions that came ashore at Midway now come ashore at Canton, just how long later? They aren´t even 100% prepped and they won´t have ANY problem to take the base. We will again lose 20.000+ troops just because the nuke bombardments take out 10.000 of my troops during the night before the assault... and then this attack! we lose the complete nav guard unit that is in the lead... atoll assault and the enemy once again takes no damage at all... we have 500 assault points, level 8 forts, 20.000 supplies and nearly 70 CD guns...

why keep on playing?

This is how my units look like. 10.000 troops wiped out during the night, which is 100% of my support units and 50% of my total strenght on the atoll. Ridicoulos enough that you can build level 8 forts on this place, is negated by the ridicoulos fact that level 8 forts don´t help at all. I know both the ridicoulos fort building and the even more ridicoulos nuke bombardment will be changed in AE but when it is the norm in this campaign and not the exception that the enemy can land like at empty bases then I will have to stop playing this WITP campaign because there´s no sense keep it going on.

With the use of 50 Kingfishers to recon the base the day before the bombardments, Miller definetely knows how to enable him to do nukes EVERYTIME. lol

It´s been 12 hours ago that those nukes destroyed my base on Canton Island but I´m still pissed off. And even though we have had a real success this turn, my mood doesn´t change... [8|]

I-175 attacks again with a salvo of four torps and the US carrier is again stricken by two torpedoes which cause the carrier to sink with all hands down. The second US fleet carrier of the war is confirmed SUNK! And Lexington is limping heavily damaged back to Palmyra also and she was the one that took three torpedoes during the Japanese air attacks, so I had given Saratoga more chances to survive...

this time the Allied attackers get a bloody nose but I doubt the base will hold. Miller has brought no dedicated combat eng units so the forts seem to be his main problem at the moment. Still, the three divisions will be too much for the defenders I guess. We are now trying to reinforce the island asap with all possibilities we have. Once again Miller came too early with too much force. We are building up both Pago Pago and Baker but both airfields are only level 2 at the moment, so there won´t be any air support for Canton. The plan was to have those three bases support each other when the Allied attack goes in, but just like at Midway, the Allied attacked too early for our defense.

And still, when I concentrate on my main tactic to inflict serious losses on the attacker then I have to be satisfied. We didn´t wreck havoc on the invasion, but we have one US fleet carrier confirmed sunk and another one limping back seriously damaged and in danger of sinking also. There´s only one US CV left operational at the moment so I just have to be satisfied. The downside is that if Canton falls, then my positions in the South Pacific are impossible to hold and have to be abandoned. With only the British carriers and one US carrier in the Pacific, I am now sure that Miller won´t attack into the area around Baker, nor at Wake. But hey, I also was sure not to see him attacking when he lost Enterprise near Wake. [;)]

We will see...

The loss of Saratoga resulted in quite high air losses today also...

this is already the fourth phase that the enemy TFs are unloading! Can´t believe that Miller again brought far too few ships for his troops unloading at an atoll... The Midway landing and his nuke bombardments make him pretty confident. And it´s certified to be confident, can´t see much hope for my troops at Canton...

Tokyo news announces the sinking of US fleet carrier Saratoga by I-175 near the Pacific atoll Palmyra! Japanese naval forces once again prove to rule the sea and once again the American imperialists have suffered a serious loss! BANZAI! BANZAI! BANZAI!


USS Saratoga (CV-3, Originally CC-3), 1927-1946

USS Saratoga, a 33,000-ton aircraft carrier, was converted from the battle cruiser Saratoga (CC-3) while under construction at Camden, New Jersey. Commissioned in November 1927, as the second of the Navy's initial pair of fully capable aircraft carriers, Saratoga spent the years before World War II taking part in exercises, training aviators and generally contributing to the development of carrier techniques and doctrine. She was in the Pacific when the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor on 7 December 1941 and took part in the abortive Wake Island relief expedition later in that month. While operating in the Hawaiian area on 11 January 1942, she was struck by a torpedo from a Japanese submarine, necessitating several months of repairs, during which her eight-inch guns were replaced by the more useful 5"/38 dual purpose type.

Saratoga returned to action in June 1942, in time for reinforcement operations immediately following the Battle of Midway. She was next engaged in supporting the Guadalcanal Operation in August 1942, including participation in the Battle of the Eastern Solomons. Another enemy submarine torpedo hit on 31 August put her in the repair yard for two months.

The carrier was back in the South Pacific war zone in December 1942, spending the next year in that area. In November 1943, her planes made devastating raids on the Japanese base at Rabaul and supported the Gilberts operation later in the month. In January and February 1944 Saratoga took part in the invasion of the Marshall Islands. She then was sent to join the British Eastern Fleet in the Indian Ocean and participated in raids on Japanese positions in the East Indies during April and May 1944. An overhaul from June to September prepared her for employment training aviators for night operations. In February 1945, she carried night fighters during the Iwo Jima invasion and raids on the Japanese home islands. Several Kamikaze suicide plane hits on 21 February caused serious damage and casualties, sending her back to the U.S. for another session in the shipyard.

Saratoga returned to service in May, again taking on a training role that lasted until Japan's surrender. Beginning in September 1945, she transported servicemen from the Pacific back to the United States as part of Operation "Magic Carpet". Too old for retention in the post-war fleet, Saratoga was then assigned to target duty for the atomic bomb tests at Bikini, in the Marshall Islands. She survived the first blast, on 1 July 1946, but sank after the 25 July underwater test. USS Saratoga still lies beneath the waters of Bikini atoll, where she is occasionally visited by divers.

you still don´t get it... lol, why should you, when you use 49 x 5 ship TFs to do a landing... and the winner is: the one who´s able to exploit the game engine the most... lol

Canton Island is indefensible and cut off from resupply efforts without control of the surrounding oceans. That's why as an Allied player I don't try to reinforce it heavily. You can push him back to Hawaii and prevent any counter invasions until late 43 with the lose of his CVs. Go get him!!

no there´s no need for a new hr as also 2 BB and 3 CA are easily enough to nuke a base. It all comes down to the detection level and Miller knows this as good as I do, that´s why we have seen 50+ Kingfisher recon missions during the day before the nukes. The only thing that helps is the fact not to put any support units like base forces, AA units or eng units onto an island. This of course won´t help you either.

you are correct. At the moment it is pretty much a draw when it comes down to ground warfare on the atoll, but I´m sure that the enemy will gain strenght soon after having rested a couple of days. Primary goal now is not to lose Canton and bring my carriers into position. Then Baker has to be built up to level 4 (it´s only 2 and 78% at the moment) and the airfield on Canton has to be repaired (it repairs at a rate of 3% at the moment).
