I want to be tested...oh wait...I thought this was the chlamydia thread...never mind.

Hey Cap-on a serious note:

I've been wondering WTF is up with the >50,000 'pending' COVID-19 tests in CA. Been that way for several days. What's the explanation?

Well, I sent 3 to Quest, the results took 7 to 9 days.I think they did not have enough staff to run the damn things. Seems to me the demand was predictable.

Coronavirus: The California Herd
March 31, 2020

https://www.nationalreview.com/2020/03/ ... -immunity/

"It’s been well over two months since the first certified coronavirus case in the United States, so one might expect to see early symptoms of the apocalypse recently forecast by Governor Newsom.

Yet a number of California’s top doctors, epidemiologists, statisticians, and biophysicists — including Stanford’s John Ioannides, Michael Levitt, Eran Bendavid, and Jay Bhattacharya — have expressed some skepticism about the bleak models predicting that we are on the verge of a statewide or even national lethal pandemic of biblical proportions.

The skeptics may be right. As of this moment, California’s cumulative fatalities attributed to coronavirus are somewhere over 140 deaths, in a state of 40 million.'

Here is another one with Michael Osterholm.
(From Peter Attia, MD)

Greetings -

We’ve just released a new COVID-19 episode with Michael Osterholm, an internationally recognized expert in infectious disease epidemiology:

#102 - Michael Osterholm, Ph.D.: COVID-19—Lessons learned, challenges ahead, and reasons for optimism and concern

This episode was recorded on March 30, 2020.

Once again, we’ll continue to release shorter and more irregular (schedule-wise) podcasts during this crisis.

We are continuing to update our COVID-19 specific page which houses all podcasts, Q&A videos, and patient memos regarding COVID-19. We’ll also continue to address questions received via Twitter and Instagram, and provide video updates on Instagram and YouTube as we learn more information.

Just began listening, but here is a spoiler:

COVID-19 is NOT seasonal. The other Corona viruses (like causing SARS and MERS) are NOT seasonal.

As at 6:00am on 1 April 2020, there have been 4,707 confirmed cases of COVID-19 in Australia. There have been 348 new cases since 6:00am yesterday.

Of the 4,707 confirmed cases in Australia, 20 have died from COVID-19. More than 250,000 tests have been conducted across Australia.

They then have a graph which looks inconsistent with that; then again, there was a report a few days ago of 468 new cases, which is not on the graph either.

Some big jumps in non-Spain/Italy big European countries. UK, Netherlands, Belgium, and Germany all seeing pretty sizeable jumps.

Spain has a decline today, but still too early to tell. Italy is being stubborn though still within some range of "has probably plateaued." I can only hope that the reduction in new cases is because of a decrease in subjects and not a decrease/refocus in capacity.

This pie chart is interesting - there are now about 5 of them cruising up and down off the coast, refusing to return to their home ports (including the Bermuda flagged Ruby Princess); almost every day sick crew members are being taken off for treatment.

Well, who could imagine an army guy could be so smart?

By the way, my step father was in the 5th Rangers, Headquarters Battalion during the big one. Tough SOB's. He scared the hell out of me when I was a kid.

Yes, Rangers are tough. But I was never in the US Army Rangers.

The reason why the graph looks like that is they are including new diagnoses as recent as yesterday. There will be many tests pending.

Also, weren't a lot of the positives from people returning? They come in and get tested? Then quarantined for 2 weeks whether or not they are positive? That last should help limit the spread.

I saw this news report from the land of Minnesota Nice:

Minnesota trooper's roadside gesture during traffic stop brings doctor to tears

Facebook
A state trooper gave these patrol-issued masks to Dr. Sarosh Ashraf Janjua after he pulled her over for speeding on Interstate 35 in east-central Minnesota.
A state trooper pulled over a doctor for speeding on an east-central Minnesota interstate, told her she should know better and sent her on her way grateful for receiving only a warning and not a ticket.
The trooper also gave her a fistful of coveted N95 medical masks that were issued for his protection from the deadly coronavirus pandemic.
“I burst into tears,” Dr. Sarosh Ashraf Janjua, a Boston native and cardiologist, wrote in a detailed Facebook account of the traffic stop on March 21 along Interstate 35 in North Branch as she traveled from work in Duluth for a break in Minneapolis. “I think he teared up a little as well before wishing me well and walking away.”
Janjua also saw the masks handed to her as having value beyond their role in stemming the virus’ spread.
“This complete stranger, who owed me nothing and is more on the front lines than I am, shared his precious masks with me, without my even asking,” she wrote. “The veil of civilization may be thin, but not all that lies behind it is savage. We are going to be OK.”

Then they had links to these:

Polaris resumes some production but initiates pay cuts, furloughs

Minnesota's COVID-19 deaths now stand at 12
Two deaths and 53 new cases of COVID-19 were reported Tuesday as the the state completed its fourth day of "stay-at-home" restrictions.

Tracking coronavirus in Minnesota
.
.
Twelve COVID-19 patients in the state have died, according to MDH. Patients in Minnesota range in age from four months to 104 years old. In about 85% of cases, the patient experiences mild symptoms that do not require hospitalization, Gov. Walz said March 25.

On the testing, I mentioned this before, but Korea went through a MERS outbreak in 2015 (this is a long thread so I reckon some reiteration doesn't hurt). Luckily, the powers that be took to heart a lot of lessons from that clusterfark (to you U.S. military guys: goat rodeo?). One was the need to fast track testing kit approval. Another was to get dedicated private testing facilities onboard for future outbreaks, as government lab facilities were wholly inadequate. So, for instance, the lab at the missus' hospital signed up to be one of those private testing facilities to be used in an emergency. The network thus established could handle 20,000 results per day with a maximum of a six-hour turnaround. That lab network served the country very well early on. I guess the point would be you could have eleventy million testing kits, but you'd still need to have a system to process those suckers [*cough* California *cough*].

A couple of weeks ago, 15-minute blood tests were introduced (the six-hour tests involve swabbing your nose and throat). The missus tells me they use these for normal patients who are about to undergo surgery. They don't want to cut you up if you have Covid.

Regarding contact with China, although we are essentially an island (the DMZ ain't too porous), we used to have beaucoups Chinese tourists flying in to buy all kinds of crap from duty-free stores, and Korean companies have a large presence in China (China is Korea's biggest trading partner). Heck, I took the family to an aquarium chock full of Mandarin speakers during the last weekend of January. The opposition party has more or less called our president Xi's puppet for never banning flights from China. Still, visits from China naturally declined quite a bit and the Korean government finally instituted a mandatory 14-day quarantine for all overseas visitors which took effect today (other more targeted measures have been in place). That pretty much puts a crimp on tourism and business trips.

Rader: Glad to hear this hasn't hit you hard. I hope it stays that way.

Stay safe!

Cheers,
CB

Dutch 101-year-old coronavirus patient recovers [X(]
The woman, whose name was not released, was admitted to the IJsselland Hospital near Rotterdam a week and a half ago with breathing difficulties and tested positive for coronavirus.

She was kept in isolation but has now recovered enough to leave hospital. The centenarian, who lives independently, will rest in a nursing home before returning to her home, the hospital said on its website.

I was consulting my physician earlier today. I asked him whether the medical authorities are announcing what are probably inflated figures. His response was to the effect:

"50% of people have an IQ of less than 100."

They are now being locked down in hotels under police/military guard for 2 weeks, they don't bother testing them unless they have symptoms.
