Happy Birthday to our son Alex, who turns 16 today! He was almost 6 when I first met him. I can't tell you guys how proud I am of the young man he's growing into. [8D]

USS Mike-send him to a real school if he can't get into West Point, whydoncha? The Gophers are always looking for some talent. Oh, and we have a nice ROTC program too. [:)]

Who wouldn't want to be part of the Golden Gopher battalion? [:D] We are allowed to use this title when referring to our program. Other programs nearby have their own NCAA-neutered titles that aren't nearly so interesting. [:'(]

Mike , it doesn't matter which service academy he chooses. Upon graduation he can then pick his service. One young man I know went to the USAF academy , then chose USN as his chance to fly improved. [:D]
Also , you might want to purchase one of those world maps of US bases. Show him where the majority of USA and USMC bases are (swamps and deserts) Where the USAF likes to place it's bases (deserts , praire , and big empty places) and where the Navy puts its bases ( big cities with lots of bases , generally in southern climes). Appeal to his hobbies (hard to sail in a desert or a praire) and even JAX has hockey rings and teams). Way back when Lou was considering the choice of service , that map worked for me! [:D]

You might consider the purchase of a back up gas powered trash pump. 1st thing I did when we moved here. [:)]

Yes , a trash pump. They are designed to empty lots of water from a pond or basement in a very short time. A gasoline powered one is great for power failures. "DUMBASS".[:D]

I’m making grilled mutton chops with a tarragon/pomegranate sauce.

Mutton chops call for a Pauillac. But with pomegranate, you might be interested in a Beaujolais, the heavier ones, Côte de Brouilly or something, strong enough for the mutton, but with the fruit taste that goes with the pomegranate.

If you feel bold (and you believe the person you invite likes strong wines) you might want to try a Cornas, I'm ready to bet it works with the chops, and the leather taste would probably work wonders with the fruits in the dressing.

Pauillac would need to be around 2007, Brouilly 2010, and Cornas as old as you can afford...

I agree, mouton chops want something chewey. But one can't get decent stuff in Alabama.I 'm using the last of my Domaine Drouhin DDO 2008 Pinot. I had thought of a Malbeck, but you are right about the pomegranate. Mutton, fruit, really wants something in the middle leaning towards cutting the heaviness of the lamb. Best I could do with what's available is the strongest pinot I could find. He makes it in the Burgundy style.; tight, structured, intelligent, woof !!

Or a white? You'd need something not too dry so that it goes with the fruit, but not too sweet so that you keep the taste of the meat.

A southern alsace (pinot gris, or one of the sweeter rieslings) or a burgundy white (a chardonnay, but a sunny one), sound like good ideas. But I've had Saumur white (Chenin) that would go well too.
In fact, there probably are more possibilities than with reds, all easier to find in your parts. Just something slightly fat, not too dry, and not sweet.

And beside, if you serve cheese, cheese and white is something to behold. An interesting surprise for the end of the meal, just before you move to more serious matters.
