We have a really potent Air Force; I've been keeping it intact and husbanding its fighter strength but this turn it was time to release parts of it again!
A strong CAP over Bassein combined with sweeps and bombing missions against troops in Burma and shipping at Port Moresby.

Results were quite good, we lost 20 pilots killed and 20 wounded (75 ac lost to 125 Allied).
We hit and destroyed several loaded troop transports, a light cruiser. The heavily damaged Revenge was also pummeled, guess she's been disbanded in PM harbour...hm.

Enemy ground attack against Bassein could not be stopped, heaviest raid caused 800+ casualties and our brigade lost 40 of 140 combat squads. Insane...Bassein is a town! for gawds sake, not an open killing field.

Looks like lots of enemy armor is pooring down towards Bassein, this is ok - if they enter with our main force in Rangoon we'll destroy them!

This was much of an anti turn;

I suspected Andy would send his 4Es to Moulmein, wondered why he didn't do it already.
So I put all our fighters on 40% CAP - expected all to scramble if attacked (ca 300 fighters, 240 operational).
- Allies sweeps hit Pegu and roughly 100 4Es attacked Moulmein.

No need for Allied fighters really, 4Es are much more dangerous to both our fighters and bases [8|]
We scrambled ca 105 fighters and 25 enemy bombers were reported lost today. Still, the remaining 75 bombers decimated Moulmein.
Loads of ac were destroyed on ground and the base completely closed, so the PM Liberator strike met no resistance and destroyed more fighters.

The laser bomb aim of 4Es is the Allied Uber weapon of AE.
6 airfields means that Moulmein district got 6 airfields, it thus took only ~12 4Es to close each base and blow up the fighters in a base with 4 forts.

In comparison, we attacked Prome today with 70 medium bombers; the results 13 hits [:(]
The difference is abnormous...27 Wellingtons scored 144 hits on fields in Lashio.

In Port Moresby I attempted another attack run; all our fighters performed sweeps but met so many enemy fighters that friendly losses were very high.
The 2 bomber units that attacked lost 46 ac despite all our sweeps. So no more of this!

The only good results were achieved on the ground; the Allied assault on Toungoo was repulsed firmly.
This is the main thing, I now think we can stall the Allied ground offensive.

Intel shows 10 enemy divs, 200k troops and 1871 AFVs north of Rangoon. This force will not be able to defeat our 2000 AV in Rangoon.
Our troops in Toungoo can hold the enemy and I have 3 divisions of troops that will garrison the hex south of Toungoo.
- Troops can only move 2 miles per turn in move mode going west -> east, so if Andy want to move his main army south of Toungoo it will take 20+ days.
If he so does he will have to split his army; in the 20 days to come we will have more divisions and be able to switch troops between Rangoon and the position south

Stabilizing the front is excellent news and should permit you to hold until the end of the next monsoon season, yes? As you are well aware, watch for an amphib now, but IMHO your continued sea power edge should blunt this threat as long as you play it right.

6 airfields means that Moulmein district got 6 airfields, it thus took only ~12 4Es to close each base and blow up the fighters in a base with 4 forts.

I agree about the 4E's, but the second part is more disturbing.

Wellington is a 2E medium bomber, so on par with the IJ bombers. It carries 8x500lb though, double the Helen/Sally load. Still 27 x 8 = 216 total bombs. 144 hits => 66% hit percentage. I have never gotten even close to that with an IJ bomber. So, it would appear maybe that allied bombers are getting a bonus to hit due to better bombsights? Might need tweaking. In any circumstance, a formation of 27 bombers in WWII would have been lucky in the extreme to get those results. Just my observation here.

PS: Just talked with Gene, B-24 belly gunner. 87 years young yet. He just laughed. He said in de-briefs they got a "good" mark anytime the photos showed better than 20% in the box. He said the box was bigger than the actual target, but he didn't know anymore how much bigger. He said you had the photo, then the box and then the real target (factory, bridge, train switch yard, whatever) inside that. He's the last of his crew, so can't asked the pilot or bombadier who might have known more. They got their unit reunion in Nov, maybe get more then.

I suspected Andy would send his 4Es to Moulmein, wondered why he didn't do it already.
So I put all our fighters on 40% CAP - expected all to scramble if attacked (ca 300 fighters, 240 operational).
- Allies sweeps hit Pegu and roughly 100 4Es attacked Moulmein.

No need for Allied fighters really, 4Es are much more dangerous to both our fighters and bases [8|]
We scrambled ca 105 fighters and 25 enemy bombers were reported lost today. Still, the remaining 75 bombers decimated Moulmein.
Loads of ac were destroyed on ground and the base completely closed, so the PM Liberator strike met no resistance and destroyed more fighters.

The laser bomb aim of 4Es is the Allied Uber weapon of AE.
6 airfields means that Moulmein district got 6 airfields, it thus took only ~12 4Es to close each base and blow up the fighters in a base with 4 forts.

In comparison, we attacked Prome today with 70 medium bombers; the results 13 hits [:(]
The difference is abnormous...27 Wellingtons scored 144 hits on fields in Lashio.

Do you have enough AA units with 75mm AA guns at Moulmein? Flak can make a huge difference.


As you can see in the combat report for your attack on Prome, Andy most likely has lots of AA guns at Prome: Roughly one third of your bombers were damaged even without any CAP and when bombing from 15,000 feet. You cannot expect high accuracy from your bombers when (probably lots) of 3.7in AA guns are firing on them and they're bombing from 15,000 feet.

These are definitely factors you want to take into account - the allies are bombing at lower altitudes, with potentially less flak (and less effective flak) with bigger bombloads......

Yes, number of AA guns is decisive factor here; Jap flak is really poor, 4Es can bomb at 11-15k feet without taking much damage from our massed batteries. I have AA units in most bases, not so many in Moulmein but previous bombardments of Rangoon were we had oodles witnessed their inability to disrupt the bombers.

Our medium bombers are forced to bomb from high altitude because of highly efficient Allied flak and this severly reduce accuracy.

Apart from this a hit ratio of 30-60% is still insanely high!
I know that an airfield size 7 in AE is an abstraction of reality, but it's not a good abstraction.
- Port Moresby had 7 airfields in WWII and there was no conceivable way of closing them all down in one attack unless you had an enormous number of bombers.

The abstraction in AE should therefore make it increasingly difficult to suppress a large airfield - but it's not so.
With a single attack by 100-150 4E bombers Andy closed down Rangoon (size 9 AF). Same faith awaited all the rest of Jap airfields in Burma.
- A single attack with a relatively small number of bombers can therefore efficiently close down a major air system with hundreds of fighters on CAP.

I don't think this is very realistic, especially not when a base like Rangoon or Moulmein got 5 forts.
Most airfields had shelters for aircraft and dispersed them into the jungle. Low level sweeps by fighter bombers were more efficient at times than high level bombers, but flak
was much more of an issue then.

When the 75 4Es hit Moulmein there were 240 fighters in the base plus 60 damaged ac.
After the attack there were 200 damaged fighters left. I had to disband the units or rail them to a damaged base in Rangoon to disperse them.
It will take weeks to get the air units back together and in shape again. The result achieved by 75 4Es is not great, it's extraordinary. Unfortunately most 4E attacks are [8|]

But Japan has their uber weapons as well, like Nell and Betty torpedo bombers and accelerated aircraft and ship production etc.
Allies suffer from nerfed subs which seriously affect their ability to suppress Japan...but this is partly compensated for by the uber 4Es.
- Someone said they were looking forward to see how I handled massed 4E raids.

Well, there is no way to "handle them", it's only possible to reduce their efficiency by moving our main airfields as far back as possible to reduce enemy fighter sweep efficiency and place as many AA guns, engineers, forts and fighters in the base as possible while providing support from nearby base CAP.

If / when Andy gets his hands on Rangoon and the cluster of surrounding bases the Allied 4E menace will be able to reach far and wide but I hope it will be possible to prepare a networked chain of bases in and around Bangkok. I'm also prepping size 9 airbases in Saigon, Victoria Point and Medan.

I've placed 2 division worth of troops in Tavoy and the base south of it and is building forts like crazy.
An Allied effort to bypass Moulmein will therefore have to hit our "fortified" bases between Medan and Tavoy, all defended with heavy garrisons and forts.
Will require the bulk of the Allied fleets to pull this off against our LBA and KB (I hope:).

I also agree. Fortifications are in the bombing result calc per Michael, but it doesn't seem to be dialed in yet. We have some pretty good end war data on bombing results against fortified targets (Iwo, Tarawa, Okinawa). Basically, the historical result was at fort level 6, a 500 lb should have a tiny chance to do damage. Like 0.1%. Really. Thousands of bombs should do little damage. Read up on what the marines met when they landed at Iwo after what, a month?, bombing campaign. Now those bigger, fort buster bombs, that some of the british can carry .. yeah, those should still damage.

If anything, the IJ results are closer to what the allies should be seeing and then the IJ should be about 10 -25% below that due to lessor bombsights at altitudes over say 10,000 ft or so. At 5000 ft, shouldn't be much, if any, difference inherent in the accuracy. Then when you factor in the larger bomb loads and more aricraft, you get the allies with a 3:1 or 4:1 bombing advantage. Right now it feels like 100:1. Granted, the B-17 is a far better bomber than the Helen. But if you can say you'd rather have 1xB-17 than 100xKi-49, then you know you've got something to look at. [;)]

This turn was interesting; Allied 4E continued to pummel all our airfields in Burma while both sides hit eachothers
ground troops in Bassein area. Our sweepers stayed home this turn, so we took some casualties.
- Our ground casualties were of course 8 times higher as well.

A sub made contact with the enemy in Port Moresby and this triggered substantial night air attacks; surprisingly hits were scored!
A damaged CL took a torpedo while a low flying Helen hit a cargo ship! [&o]

A convoy spotted near Penrhyn Island was intercepted by 2 light cruisers, unfortunately the convoy escaped - even though our ships had
radar they didn't spot the enemy at 4000 yards...[:(]

Burma

It's a potentially dangerous game in Burma.
Stalling the Allies at Rangoon, alternatively force them to detour SSW will allow us to gather all our troops to the north.
- The question will then be whether to strike at the enemy flank, leave a strong rearguard in Rangoon or face the enemy at Pegu.

Enemy supply must be strained with so many troops!

If someone want to do some research, can you check how long Allied infantry and armored units take to march in move / combat mode from the hex north of
Rangoon to Pegu?

Also; with 5 forts in Rangoon, how many AV would be enough to stall an enemy army of 5000 AV?
- Will 1000 do it?

The AV equation is not static - many of the Allies squad types upgrade to become much more powerful, but each squad still counts as "1 AV". You really need to look at what you are facing, then look at the anti-soft and anti-hard ratings of that squad type in Tracker.

I posed the suggestion about a month ago and it was declined. Not sure it is within Michael's scope right now. Prolly take a "bunch" of the original team to agree to. Maybe not even then.


So, doesn't seem likely to happen. Since then I've been developing a work-around for my personal mod.
