What type of dog, KEM?
GDV is the most common manifestation of 'bloat' in dogs. This is gastric dilitation and volvulus. Layman's terms: the stomach, usually when filled with feed or other heavy material essentially undergoes dilatation and cuts off its own outflow tract. In a stomach that is producing gas from the digestive process, the stomach will dilate further, even torsing ("flipping over") on the esophagus. It's like twisting a baloon around a stationary point, resulting in stricture and strangulation of that point.
Sufficient pressure can build to interfere with breathing and circulatory (venous) return. Dogs will usually undergo systemic shock from these changes.
The condition is life-threatening and, as you can imagine, is acutely painful. Repair is by either surgical (usually) or non-surgical repair. Gastropexy (affixing the stomach to the inner body wall) may be necessary in cases that are prone to repeat. Deep chested, larger dogs are particularly prone to the problem. There's also some connection with dogs fed only one large meal daily. There may be heritable traits (other than the breed connection) with some familial tendencies demonstrated.
Your dog may have just had 'garbage gut', KEM. More of an annoyance or inconvenience than bloat per se. You...um...will keep your dog outside or in an indoor kennel for a couple days, right? Sometimes, that's best until gut function returns to normal (along with a bland diet, etc., etc.). In any case, I'd keep her away from my antique white polar bear throw rug, if you get my gist.

I'm not very good at the loss of a great companion. When I lost Boomer (Yellow Labrador Retriever) to bone cancer at 6 yrs., 8 mos. I was a total wreck. Especially The Rainbow Bridge card, signed by the entire staff from the clinic. The neighborhood also felt the loss of a great lab. Because....'Everybody loves Boomer'. I was relegated to Robert Barone status. Everybody knew him. I was called Mike. Close but not my name. His ashes are in the china cabinet with other momentos of his life. Fortunately he had sired a litter a few months before the cancer was detected. I did take pick of the litter, a black male. That made the healing process that much easier. He's seven now. And even more spoiled than his father. Gotta go. Feel some welling inside.
God bless all the great best friends that give us such unlimited devotion and love.

thanks for the info...he's a mutt, maybe 40 pounds - looks like some form of terrier and maybe wheaton (i posted a pic of him a while back)...he's on a pretty bland diet of boiled white chicken breast and white rice for the next few days...gets fed twice a day (maybe a cup each meal)...'garbage gut' may be what it was...he ate something unidentifiable friday night on the patio of the golf course grill...then was fed a huge hot dog by a well meaning bartender...he doesn't get those often...poor guy is better, but i can still tell by his eyes that he's still not 100%...not the same bright eyed boy lately...we will give it some time and hopefully he'll be back to normal in a day or so...thanks again for the info and the link
