TURN 41 - Chernigov

An opportunistic push south of this city has resulted in a small breakthrough. It would useful if the enemy pulled back behind the line of the Dnepr at this stage.

TURN 41 - Kerch

The Axis has eliminated my landing in Kerch, but I now hold all of the Kuban in considerable strength. I am digging in in depth and he will have a difficult fight if he tries to use this route again.

He must be feeling his lines are thin if there are infantry regiments up front; that's probably from a split division rather than standalone regiments.

Think of it as a large scale Dieppe.

Yes. I was a bit surprised that he decided to attack me in the Dnepr sector. I would have happily dug in and refitted until after the mud. I think the Soviets can handle the current tempo of operations better than the Axis.

I learned a lesson about resupply with that one - capture a port on the same turn you land!

Historically, the Soviets lost about 30% of their Kuban invasion force, so given that my attack was much smaller, the results are about on par.

Seriously though, the formation of Luftwaffe field units was a response to crises, so if the crises come early, so should some of the field units.

TURN 42 - Mud

Almost zero movement this turn. Digging in, refitting and forming a few Tank Corps.

Recon shows that the enemy is still maintaining a large force of armour around Kerch. I can't believe he will try another attack into the Caucasus by this route, but I am moving a third Army up to deepen the defences there just in case. Maybe this could become my Kursk in '42...

TURN 43

Mud, glorious mud... Nothing worth reporting this turn

Turn 44 - more mud, but I have made some successful attacks toward the Dnepr...

This PBEM game is now officially ended. My opponent and I agreed that the Soviets are overpowered after the first winter, even with me using a 'historical' linear defense from turn 1. I haven't analysed all the factors, but the blizzard effects are a major contributor.

At this stage, we were clearly not going to see an Axis resurgence in '42 and I was even making gains in the mud.

I will be waiting to see how the game evolves and what design decisions are made by the devs before coming back to PBEM.
