Interesting UAV. While it seems to have fewer weapons than the Reaper, it carries a Synthetic Aperture Radar for all-weather operation and for target detection above clouds as standard equipment.

IIRC the Reaper has yet to carry a SAR radar as standard equipment, though it was tested with one in 2014...

Nice video, but I found using targets strikingly resembling red cross tent quite disturbing, especially in light of recent Kunduz event (https://youtu.be/49AZOVbUV1o?t=1m11s)

On a side note, AFAIK Reaper uses SAR radar (AN/APY-8 Lynx) for quite a few years

Yeah, sorry. I forgot that. I just read that the Lynx-II was tested in 2014. The Reaper needed the SAR for the JDAM bombs all the time...

Regarding the Red Cross... Well, let's say that it is quite a bit macabre. But possibly unintentional, since China actually has no axe to grind against them (aside of their Chinese franchise being hopelessly corrupt, that is [;)]).

A side note, during The war of Middle East, US medevacs uses red diamond as medic sign, to avoid locals mistaken the typical red cross sign as Christian insignia.

Just saw that more info on the RN Type 26 frigate is out. I was very interested to see that it has a 5" naval gun and not a 4.5".

Chinese 868-class semi-submersible MLP launches Zubr Hovercraft during recent amphibious drills.

I still cannot be certain if this is work as exactly as US MLP do -- not just by deploying hovercraft but also act as a mobile parking lot for other amphibious vehicles and/or even combatants. Otherwise, it will be just a military-servicing submersible utilitary ship.

A defence expert said Australia would assert ownership and take it back over in a crisis, while another unnamed military source said it was a concern. But then others have said it is a storm in a teacup and apparently the official response from ADF is they are not worried. The Navy is also building a second facility next door to accommodate the RAN's new LHD's and the USMC deployments to Darwin.

So there is possibly a scenario in there, although I am not sure how a chinese corporation holding the lease would be any real military advantage. It doesn't mean the PLAN could just turn up at Darwin and start offloading troops.

Also there is smaller version of this system, 5P-42-01 "Grach" for installation on small/landing crafts:


this system is mainly for protections against ATGMs and other munitions with optical guidance

Range of this things (affected by weather, type of target, etc) is something like 15km for "Filin" against missile/bombs and for "Grach" 2km against missile/bombs 4km against ATGM launchers

Soft-kill laser system is 80s tech since the response of "Star Wars" project from the US. There is yet to prove how effective to blind IR optics with it, but it is theoretically possible since stronger IR disturbance from laser can cause an intense blinding effect for the optics.

Though, the UN is truly not happy at all to use it against human eyeballs.

CCWC article 4 prohibits the use of laser weapons specifically designed to cause permanent blindness,

but does not prohibit attacks against binoculars, periscopes, telescopes, and other optical equipment because it was unknown whether laser attacks on such devices could cause permanent blindness. Article 3 allows attacks on electronic optical equipment, because damaging it would not cause human injury
