After a two night bombing attempt at Oosthaven, which netted little, the allies try a daylight raid. Severe storms hamper the air activities of both sides. The raid is a bit uncoordinated and the first wing to arrive are unescorted bombers. Japanese CAP is likewise disorganized and slow to respond.

I am watching the combat replay from Dec. 7th in my new game as the allies I will post sections of the combat report when I get it. 6 BBs sunk at Pearl... yes 6... and 6 DDs sunk at Pearl... and CLs... CAs hit with torpedos. The most amazing Pearl Harbor attack that I have ever seen.. and I have run about 70 Pearl attacks with all games and sandboxing the first turn.

It's not really that bad as it might seam from the combat report, there is a lot FoW in this...
Btw this is not the best result I ever had, you should see one from last week in my previous failed game against pz501, PH was a burning wasteland after day one - no wonder he bailed on me... [:)]

This guy (Bobo) is terrificly aggressive and imaginative. I like it. British fighting spirit.

I have tried to limit his opportunities to inflict losses on my forces to the best that I am able. Most every amphibious groups have had a SCTF lurking nearby, CV support, and under the cover of Nells/Betties. I also tried to the best of my ability to take away as many offensive weapons as I could as quickly as I could: such as the B-17s at Cagayan.

In my opinion, he has done a very good job of taking advantage of mistakes and oversights that I have made to hamper the Japanese advance and cause losses for my forces. He is aggressive and does run into trouble sometimes, but he also finds weak spots to exploit. That is the nature of aggressive play. It is always a gamble. I am inclined toward being aggressive myself, depending on circumstances.

What impresses me most about Bob is that he is aggressive without being entirely reckless. This is a fine line. He has lost little and always maintains an "exit" door for his naval forces.

Jan. 28th

I did it again: left a group of bombers on target after the target had retreated or been destroyed. As a result, a fighter sweep in China went over the adjacent hex, while the bombers strayed into allied LRCAP and found an element of AVG.

The poor Nate pilots (and they are not the best that the IJA has) did a fine job of keeping AVG off the bombers. The next 2 waves were not so fortunate.

Unless you found some way for Kates to carry more than 1 torpedo or Vals to carry more than 1 bomb, this is the best result you could ever possibly hope to achieve in 1 million Pearl Harbor attacks... since every bomb and torpedo hit.

I didn't play WitP for 2 years and made many blunders so far. You are giving me to much credit.

Except recon, from December 7th, there was zero(I mean the # [:D]) Japanese air activity in Burma. I've been expecting his fighters to show up eventually in Burma but it is cat and mouse game. My other option was to sit idle on the ground.

He has been probing northern Indochina with small bomber strikes: I think to clarify his recon reports and determine exactly what forces are there. His recon is showing troop concentrations, so I think he wants to know exactly what troops are there. His small bombing raids have revealed nothing but puppet units to this point.

e noticed that I forgot to check the detection level at Victoria Point and did not respond to his recon. So he was able to hit the airfield there with B17s during the 2-day stretch when I had bombers there without fighters. I think, though I may be wrong, that he was thinking that I would make the same mistake here. It is still early in the game, and we are still feeling out the tendencies of our opponent. BTW, the aviation support and the fighters arrived at this base the day the attack came, so the day before there were only ground troops here. It was a very well-devised "cap trap," if I do say so myself, but one should be careful about bragging. This game can humble anyone very quickly.

It is quickly becoming a very good chess match. Bob made a few mistakes early on. As he stated, he has not played for 2 years, but I can see that he is (re)learning all the nuances of the game very quickly: how effective bombing in clear terrain can be, for example, how to set altitude to his best advantage, how to arrange CAP and prevent losses to "bleeding" into adjacent hexes, and so forth. This promises to be a very good game.

There is FoW, but as far as I know not in terms of the count of hits nor in terms of whether "on fire"/"heavy fires" or "heavy damage" (>50) is reported. Those are always accurate - i.e., you never see "heavy damage" in the combat report and then open the turn to find the ship has sub-50 damage in all categories. Likewise, if the combat report tells you a bomb or torpedo hit, then that bomb or torpedo did in fact hit. Whether it did any damage, well...that's another story.

As to the attack results here, I would be curious to see how many Kates carried 800kg and how many were carrying torpedoes. From the looks of it, there were not very many carrying bombs and a lot of them carrying torpedoes (judging by lots of torpedo hits relative to "normal", and fewer bomb hits relative to "normal").

Also, any magazine explosions?

Lastly... this is just an incentive to play the Allies properly in the first bit of the war, as now you will not be tempted to overextend with your meager forces because your meager forces are even more meager [;)]. It is a blessing in disguise.

Hit rate by the torpedoes was 61/70, huge. But I had no say in this, it's just the game settings, dec.7 surprise, historic first turn etc. Full auto. In my last, brief game it was similar if not even more brutal. It would be nice to know if someone else had similar results with those same settings...

Jan. 29th.

The allied submarines are focusing mostly on shadowing and attempting to attack surface combat TFs and likely paths of troop movement. He has a number of subs stationed near Manila, for example, knowing that I will need to move some troops from Manila in the next few weeks. So with a large number of allied subs stationed near Japanese shipping concentrations, allied submarines find several targets.

Near Bangkok, they find a small TK convoy carrying oil to the refineries at Bangkok.

The submarine war is heating up in earnest, and I have only a handful of escorts with the type 2 depth charges.

Daylight, and Japanese planes appear over Port Moresby: recon and a fighter sweep. This is the first sign of Japanese interest in Port Moresby. The crack Zero pilots, veterans of the Luzon campaign (some of whom have been through a Pete training class similar to the armies' Topsy training program) prove better than their allied counterparts.

Bombers also struck Singapore as intermittent bombing continues there to obstruct the construction of fortifications. The bulk of the Japanese Malaysian army has mustered across the river from Singapore but has yet to cross the river. I have been using Sallies exclusively over Singapore to hold up better against the flak, but the damage and destroyed numbers are accumulating.

In China, elements of 4 small Chinese corps cut off in the Chinese plain by the pincer movement on Nanyang hold off an SNLF dispatched to mop them up. The SNLF had to cross a river to initiate the attack, but my congregation of forces on Loyang opened up a supply path to these units briefly. I was surprised to see them in supply, and the SNLF paid the price.

What patrol boats and aerial search Japan can muster is out hunting the subs with some limited success. A Mary reports a bomb hit on a sub near Bangkok and these 1 rack PBs actually manage to score a few hits.

Nells follow up the fighter sweep with a raid on the Moresby airfield, but the P-40s have been mostly withdrawn. A CV group, SCTF, and amphibious TF appear at the southwest tip of the New Guinea coast, headed for Moresby... no doubt. I took a rather circuitous route to New Guinea, moving down behind the Solomons and then advancing west to avoid naval search and submarines, which seemed to be concentrated on the area just south of Rabaul. Bob saw the CVs a couple days ago near Rabaul, but then they moved off to the east along with the amphib group to lose detection. I would not say that the attack is a surprise, but it did seem to arrive suddenly: (an impression that I work hard in the early game to achieve).

In the DEI, Bandjemasin falls as the Japanese forces approach Java.
